Fight Club, The Simulucrum, Marxism, and Anarchism
The more I read about advanced theories of Marxist analysis, such as Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle, Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation, and anarchist theories, the more I think Chuck Palahniuk's Fight Club is a radical manifestation of all of these concepts.
I am convinced Fight Club is a more accessible version of concepts provided by the French Situationalist Guy Debord. Mainly, in relation to the backlash at our over-saturated media culture in Fight Club. Debord saw media as capitalism manifested in digital form. Palahniuk is very good at showing how we have become commodity fetishists at the hands of advertising companies.
In terms of Baudrillard's Simulacra, Palahniuk's discussion about insomnia comes to mind... Everything becomes a copy, of a copy, of a copy...
Finally, it's obvious to see how Fight Club fits into the theme of Anarchist revolt against formalized institutional structures such as the police, corporations, and capitalism in general. If there was ever a contemporary Marxist/anarchist manifesto, it would be Palahniuk's Fight Club.
Finally, Fight Club can also be considered a nuanced look into feminist theory, particularly gender analysis of male subjectivity. I actually had a feminist literature class in which we watched the movie Fight Club.
The book reveals much more of these concepts, and the more I read it, the more I'm convinced of Palahniuk's genius.
Either he is unwittingly tapping into all of these concepts, or his work is expose and application of radical thought.
Wasn't Fight Club just about butt sex?
But then the movie bastardized the message, focusing more on abs.

Then, enlighten me. What more is there to say on the subject? What am I missing? That's the point of the post.
I'm just a dude at the other side of a computer, my friend. My name means nothing. Read it, shit on it, doesn't matter.
Your aggression is no good here. Why would I shit on your name? And if you look around this place, sadly, there is actualyl very little talk about Chuck's work.
We are mostly a group of friends who talk about a lot of random nonsense, life in general, and sex.
Take a look around, go on a little tour.
Tell us about your favorite sandwich.

No one is trying to be a dick...well okay I am not trying to be a dick. This place just has an odd set of characters and someone comes along about once a month with the same basic idea you have.

And nobody ever discusses it with them, just flicks random stuff their way and then they rage and leave or quietly leave or never respond in the first place and leave.
We're a bunch of bully's. Bully's and brutes. Unenlightened savages, grunting and consuming and sitting slavishly in our own acrid drool.
Then, enlighten me. What more is there to say on the subject? What am I missing? That's the point of the post.
You've brought up several subjects, and you've said almost nothing about them. You're right that there are concepts in Fight Club. You're right that these concepts are sometimes directly inspired by previously established systems of thought. This is almost always the case with books. What about Tyler Durden raising an army on Marxist and Buddhist thought and freeing himself from fear and death through nihilism? Do you have anything to say about these things or did you mean only to establish them?
If the point of this thread is to find out whether or not Chuck Palahniuk stumbled onto these thought structures by accident or if he did so purposely, the answer is that he did so purposely. It wouldn't take genius to do so, and though the events of the story are radical there is nothing radical about his having written them in that fashion; it had been done in both a more subtle and a more radical fashion before him. He researched, he wrote, and his aim was to make an excellent story, which he did, except he says himself that the story is better told by the movie, and that he wished after seeing it that he had put more work into the novel.
Sandwiches, huh? Well I'm cool with that. I haven't read about nihilism, but I will look at that.
You're crazy.
Mother fuck. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SANDWICH. (said in caps because I am yelling)
What kind of bread, spreads, toppings, cheese. Give us details.

Smoked cheddar, roast beef, and horse-radish sauce on a hoagie role with Au jus.
What about you?
So are you guys just a bunch of nihilists, or what?
So are you guys just a bunch of nihilists, or what?
Hedonists, the majority.
So are you guys just a bunch of nihilists, or what?
That sounds exhausting!
So are you guys just a bunch of nihilists, or what?
Alcoholic, myself.
So are you guys just a bunch of nihilists, or what?
What would the point of that be?
Yeah. What they said.
We are not a bunch of anything really, well besides alchoholic, sex crazed, men and women who have some spare free time to discuss horses and lobters.
If a Lobster were the size of a horse(which is possible and recorded) and this lobster were to talk into a bar sit down and order a drink from the bartender who happens to be a horse. What would the name of the Tavern be?

Best bullet-point layout evar.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Most times when I ask new members my strange questions there is a horse in the story. No one else seems to talk about horses but they seem to help when it comes to judging character.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
The horse is a red herring.
