favorite cd's while reading
Hey! Here's a great way for us to share our favorite bands, and spout a little about what we like to hear when we read:
What cds or records or tapes or 8-tracks do you like to listen to when you read?
I'll start the replies with my favorites: Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works V. 2" and pretty much any DJ Shadow record. Perhaps Coalesce's "0:48 revolution..." too.
Whadda yoo think???
"I, Pierre Riviere, having slaughtered my mother, my sister, and my brother..."
High Fidelity soundtrack, The Strokes, and Beck
I used to only read to techno. A college radio station had this execessively long techno show on every afternoon/evening. I read Survivor, IM and Choke to it along with many other books. Now though anything will work. I recently enjoyed the new Foo Fighters cd while reading Dr. Faustus.

Anyway, I need silence to read, myself.
VAST is great when reading chuck's books. dunno why, they just fit the mood.

D'oh! I stand corrected.
Holy shit...very much off-topic, but I have to say:
Everyone who gets a chance who hasnt done so yet, check out the "Kompressor" link on Decalogue's post. I think I just gave myself a hernia listening to "Vitamins are good". Holy shit, that stuff is funnier than a monkey knife fight!! Is that you Decalogue?
"I, Pierre Riviere, having slaughtered my mother, my sister, and my brother..."
I am not Kompressor. Kompressor is very very good. Kompressor krush with industrial might.
On April 8 it looks like youll be in my hometown.
Actually, that's the 5th. I hope to be there, but we'll have to see...
I usually read in public, with the sounds of the world in my ears. I can't listen to music and read because I really love music, and not just like 'oh, that sounds nice' love, but devote my whole week to one song when it grabs me and dissect every detail about it love.
We'd all like some real friends, but what are the odds of that happening?--Cheif Wiggum
When Im reading, or simply relaxing, I listen to the Donnie Darko Soundtrach, or a CD called Sexual Alchemy, its hindu tantric trance, Awesome CD
Beauty is nothing but the begining of terror, which we still are just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely distains to annihilate us...
And so I hold myself back and swallow the call-note of my dark sobbing...
Whom can we turn to in our need?

His books are great!
The stories are jawesome!
He hijacked a plane,
She lost half her face!
Chuckie P!
Chuckie P!
Chuck-ie P!
Hehehe... Wesley Willis makes me smile.
Now, to actually answer the question posed...
As incredibly geek as this is to admit, i have specific playlists set up on iTunes for each of Chuck's books. Stuff that reminds me of the characters and storylines... like VAST's "Pretty When You Cry" reminds me of "Joe" and Marla, so that's on the "Fight Club" playlist...

Lol, was this an actual Willis song or did you just make that up? I can imagine Willis doing this then finishing the song off with a add-placement for Ikea furniture or Revlon

Melvins or Kyuss or Isis. Something sludgy like that.
Tool or just reading aloud.
I listen to the Fight Club OST almost every single time I read a book because there are no words, so I don't get distracted by voice. Add to that the fact that it's one of my top 5 albums of all time and you have a great combination for reading, especially Chuck books.

The FC OST sucks.
Kyuss! QOFTSA! Everything NIN! Some nice ECM jazz in the background, or the noise of the trains I ride while I read!
It's an always changing jukebox....

I disagree with the FC soundtrack sucking, by the way!

It's really boring. The Dust Brothers suck as musicians, but they're great prodcuers.
Ministry is a good fit, as well.

Hey, I don't mind if ppl call music boring...we should start using the phrase: I think ... is/was/sounds/etc...boring/rad/dope/great/shit/lousy/lame/etc...
This way you won't step on eachother's toes!
(and yes! I think The Dust Brothers are GREAT producers and the whole world is one big Jackass!)

listening to music while reading is like putting ketchup on a steak

This music is boring and monotonous and repetive and derivitave and lots of other big words. It's good for background music in the movie, but not to listen to on it's own.
I didn't mean to make anyone cry. Please excuse.
Robot Puking, you obviously don't own a lot of KC Masterpiece music.
I ain't crying, momma!
What I was trying to say it's a way of putting it. Like Steve Reich, Robert Wilson, Philip Glass and many other minimalistic artists the Dust Brothers use loops and to a lot of people that may sound 'repetive and monotonous and derivitave and other words we foreigners won't get a grip on'.
I like the repetitative part of the soundtrack and that's why I enjoy it, I just don't think this thread is worth discussing taste.

huh? calm music, no we play no blues ... we play Rock and Roll!

Ministry, Kid 606, Tool, Isis, etc all repeat sections of sound a lot in their music. It's not boring because... well I don't think it is
Lots of people disagree with me.
Hell, my favorite band is the Melvins.
the melvins......HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!......

what i was trying to say, is that reading and listening to music is wrong. it doesn't go well together. EVERYBODY SAY "KC'S IN THE HOUUSE"

The reason I say you sound like a jackass is because you don't seem to understand the difference between musician and producer and exactly what it was that the Dust Brothers did.

I happen to like the Fight Club soundtrack, but I still can't read to it. It's difficult for me to read to anything. I either need complete silence or large crowds of people talking, the kind where I can't pick out a conversation and follow it, just a mass of mumblers. I'll go sit out in Red Square (not THE Red Square, just one we have here in Seattle) and read while everyone in the entire city goes by. Sometimes I get a little distracted people watching though.

Make that just you.

I usually can't listen to anything, I'm easily distracted. Unless our neighbors are making too much noise. The only thing I'd be able to listen to is Sigur Ros or Ivoux, or this thunderstorm cd. Yeah, it's cheesy, but I love storms.
