Exploding Head Syndrome: The Most Awesome Medical Condition Name Ever.
Yep. It deserved its own thread. Let's see where this goes...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome
Exploding head syndrome is a condition that causes the sufferer occasionally to experience a tremendously loud noise as originating from within his or her own head, usually described as the sound of an explosion, roar, waves crashing against rocks, loud voices or screams, a ringing noise, or the sound of an electrical short circuit (buzzing).
This noise usually occurs within an hour or two of falling asleep, but is not necessarily the result of a dream and can happen while awake as well.[1] Perceived as extremely loud, the sound is usually not accompanied by pain. Attacks appear to change in number over time, with several attacks occurring in a space of days or weeks followed by months of remission. Sufferers often feel a sense of fear and anxiety after an attack, accompanied by elevated heart rate. Attacks are also often accompanied by perceived flashes of light (when perceived on their own, known as a "visual sleep start") or difficulty in breathing. The condition is also known as "auditory sleep starts." It is not thought to be dangerous,[1] although it is sometimes distressing to experience.
Reference to the condition was made in an episode of the BBC TV drama "Doc Martin", which was instrumental in many sufferers becoming aware that the problem was in fact a known medical condition, and not one to be concerned about.
That shit happens to me!
Usually when I am about to fall asleep, though sometimes just randomly while I am awake. It's like an extremely loud crash or clapping/clanging noise. It will jerk me out of sleep.
I've experienced this occasionally. I think tiredness contributes a lot to it.
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
Dude, I think I have this, too.

yeah.. sorry about that.
i'll stop it.
Yeah - this has happened to me. Usually it wakes me up. I thought it was just a really weird thing happening in a dream or something. I didn't know it was an actual condition. Weird!

I think you are all hypochondriacs.
Though I have to admit, I was kind hoping that this was going to go in the "Spontaneous Combustion" route. Wasn't there and episode of House about this?

This syndrome's awesome name is severely disproportionate to how boring the actual syndrome is. Weak sauce.
There is hope, but not for us.
haha I agree! I was actually disappointed to find out it was something I've experienced. No big deal.
Now if it was true to the name... For Serious!

My understanding is that it is an inner ear pressure issue, like vertigo. The ear depressurizes, causing the ear drum to vibrate. The more rapid the depressurization, the louder the "Boom".
And I am so sorry to hear you had to go through a trauma induced psychotic episode. We have some stuff in common, I guess. I have found that zen mediation techniques help me to get into a state where I can sleep and it keeps the nightmares at bay, too.

I am very dissapoint in you all.

I firmly believe that the photic sneeze can be learned, which would seem to be that it could also be unlearned. This would imply that it is, indeed, not genetic. Or, at least, not entirely.

And this "firm belief" sprang from what, where, when, and why?
Facts please, FACTS!

Yes, I have that as well. Light tickles my nose. Everyone makes fun of me.
It is rather convenient though when I feel like want to sneeze but can't/won't... just look up at the sky.
Now people need to stop posting weird medical stuff. I don't want to find out I have all the conditions out there.

weird, i was just about to type this when i read your message, it is convenient to follow through on a sneeze just by looking up at the sky.
it is annoying though, and even dangerous, when you're coming out of a tunnel or something while driving onto full-on sunshine. sunglasses don't help much in preventing the optic nerves from being bombarded with too much photo stimuli at once.
fuck photo stimuli
Sometimes it just feels good to sneeze. Look at the sky twice real fast and THARF! instantaneous gratification.

I do the same. If a sneeze is having trouble coming out on its own I look up at the sky or a light.

it really hurts to sneeze when you have a boner. like rilly rilly bad.
I'll have to try that.

I do too. It's the best. Sometimes I need a good sneeze, you know? It's funny how some people think it's so normal, like oh, wow, everybody can do that. But other people think it's absolutely ridiculous and that I'm lying or something.

I brought it up in the bar a few weeks ago, turned out I was the only person out of about 15 that gets it, most had never heard of it and some never believed me due to lack of an example. It's no easy feat to perform a convincing fake sneeze! It was funny as fuck tho.

I do that sneezing thing too. I don't have Exploding Head Syndrome, but I do have some kind of weird thing like that. If you took the Exploding Head Syndrome definition and replaced "tremendously loud noise" with "tremendously painful feeling in the the back of your head like someone just punched you really hard but there is no one around" you'd have a good description of what happens to me like every other day or week. It hurts and its creepy.
