Thanks to netflix and it's streaming abilities I've been watching tons of movies and tv shows at my convenience. Among these shows, is showtime's 'Dexter'. I really enjoy the show, and was wondering if its book counter part by Jeff Lindsay is just as worth while. Any opinions?

If only this site had a section for discussing books...

They're great. Read 'em. Also- some people get pissed when you post in the wrong forum... it makes SUCH a big difference.

I love Dexter! I haven't read it though so sorry I can't really be of any help. But the show is awesome.

"Pissed" is a bit strong. More like "laughing quietly at people who can't read or follow simple instructions".

Could go to the Books forum or, I dunno, the TV forum. Maybe read one of the several Dexter threads already written where the show and books are compared and contrasted at length.

Oh, and the books suck. Julie Benz will be back this season as a new character (SPOILER!).

Have fun!

Excuse me, I'll be sure to adhere to better forum etiquette from now on. And if I ever have any questions you'll be the first one I PM, if that's alright with you, of course.

If you are reading the books, DON'T watch the series and if you are watching the series, DON'T read the books.

They are completely different story lines and will probably just frustrate.

I, of course, have watched the whole series so far, then read the first book. Throughout the whole book I was constantly comparing the two. I like the series better.

I read the books in between seasons and I wasn't bothered. I understand comparing the book to the show, but after the first book/season they don't follow each other.

Well, the good thing about the books is you can read them in an afternoon. So if you hate them, you haven't wasted too much time. They're pretty entertaining, but by no means literary masterpiece.

I read the first two, and then went with the show and never looked back. The show is way better.

I prefer the books, although the third, Dexter in the Dark, is absolute shite. I like the series also. He's very dry in the books compared to the show, and also talks much more about his dark passenger. Like everything, it's all a matter of taste. Like others have said, the books aren't literary gold, but they are enjoyable to the right reader. They have personality, and generally can be compared to popcorn movies. The first is the best, doesn't take long to read either.

Are you serious? You better be. I love Julie Benz, she was the only eye candy on that show. I was pissed when they killed off the hottest girl.

I'm halfway through the 5th book and I'm liking it.

All the books are enjoyable apart from the third one. I watched half the first series and it looked great. Im just more of a book person.

Fith?!

I heard it was due out later in the year--advanced copy, per chance? It's called Dexter is Delicious, right? Also, I agree on the third book being rubbish. It's just no good without the Dark Passenger.

It's just come out in hardback. Going to buy it. Right now.
