We had a good conversation about religion in chat the other day, and we all agreed it makes us angry when people use religion as an excuse to be horrible people. Stories like this break my heart, but it happens, you know? Horrendous acts against humanity will always exist. People like to fuck up other people.

Just last night I was reading about 14 year old Janet Moses, killed in New Zealand by her family and a priest because a Polynesian religion called Makatu believes that they can exorcise spirits from the body by scratching out a person's eyes and flooding their lungs with water.
Anneliese Michel was 23 when she died because of neglect, ordered by a priest who demanded her physical and mental illness was because of demonic forces, and her family watched her starve to death.
In Romania three years ago, a diagnosed schizophrenic nun was tied to a cross and left to die.
In Milwakee, and eight year old was suffocated to death when a 200 lb man sat on his chest for hours "exorcising" the boy.
Google "Death by Excorsim" for a thousand more examples, if you must, but to say it's ridiculous to blame deaths like this on religion is absurd.

Most religions preach the total opposite of violence. The Bible, the Koran, Jesus and Mohamed all preached and stressed peace and love. People are the ones that add the killing part then use religion as an excuse as to why they did it. Both Jesus and Mohamed are probably watching Christians and Muslims and saying, "Wow, you idiots just don't get it. Its easy, love each other. That's all. NO KILLING!"

I don't know if I'd say this is a "common occurrence." I mean, yeah, you can read all the horror stories about this stuff you want but it comes down to how many people die this way a year? 2, maybe 3? Even worldwide you might only find 5 or 6. You've got better odds of winning the lottery and getting struck by lightning on the same day than having this happen.
