wait! do it after listing the 10 cities here first.
Austin
San Fran
New York
Boston
New Orleans
Las Vegas
Venice Beach
Portland (?)
Pittsburgh (?)
St. Louis (?)
right?
Nashville is on my list of places to visit soon. I'll do a bit of research on it.
Just find Printer's Alley and you'll be fine.
They have a very nice... gentleman's club. Look for Terri, if she still works there.

Since last calls came up before, can we know the last calls in these towns? Obviously there is none in New Orleans, it's 4 a.m. in New York. Boston it's around or before 2 a.m. (which means it should be stricken from the list). I'd imagine there's none in Vegas, though I've never been. Other cities, I don't know.
I think this is important to take into consideration.

Importance duly noted. The bars are closed at 2 am in California, so thankgodthatrulesvenicebeachoutyeah!!!
Two issues remain before I make the polls.
These are the cities with an advocate and seconders saying "here-here!"

New York

Boston

Pittsburg

Austin

Portland

San Francisco

Venice Beach

New Orleans
If we really need to add as many as two more choices to this list, what are they?
The other issue is do we take the top three point-scoring cities from all polls on a cumulative basis. Or do we take the top scoring city from each of the three polls? For example, if we go the first way, the final three could be the two cities with the most votes on the first-choice poll and a third city that was a first choice for one or two people, but with an alarming number of votes on the other two polls. If we go the second way, one city is offered up from each of the three polls as a clear winner for final choice consideration. We don't even need points separate from raw voting numbers if we go that way.
I'm in favor of the first way -- a total points method that doesn't necessarily honor the top candidate from each of the three polls. But I want everyone to be clear on the difference before we put it up.
VP - Workshop Dog
It 2 am or before everywhere 'cept Vegas, NY and NO.
"well she's either a cruel horny bitch or she might actually like you." - audreythirteen
Yes, add New Orleans.
I don't think anyone's advocating LA. Except we'll practically be there if we're in Venice Beach.

i think it's not going to do us any harm to add three more cities to the list. also, there's been multiple people talk of vegas, even though i definitely don't support that choice. so i think 10 is a nice round number to work with.
and what if we average the votes from the three polls to give us our top three?
It 2 am or before everywhere 'cept Vegas, NY and NO.
Fuck. Then why aren't there only three cities on the list?
Priorities! a.k.a. Booze!

last calls have never really been a big deal to me
as long as you plan ahead an hit the liquor stores you can stock up a hotel room bathtub/toilet/sink with ice and alchohol for an early night
however if we end up doing the hostel thing that wouldnt work
Yes, Venice is LA city limits.
Karb, I've drank in every hostel I've ever stayed in.
[prayer] Dear God, please give me the strength the stay employed and never have to stay in a hostel again [/prayer]

If we do that, I think it should be a weighted average. First choice location votes counting for more than second or third. Hence the first method. Let's go with that. What say ye?

So, if I add Vegas, Saint Louis, Nashville, and a mystery choice for number 12, will everyone be satisfied?

i say 10 cities, your choice in calculating the votes' worth, and you've got my blessing to go forth into the valley of indecision and fig're this shit out. in dog's name, amen.
edit: why nashville again? who's voted on nashville more times than i've voted on savannah? otherwise i'm cool with the list.

Also, in regards to this list, it would behoove us to have at least one local, or someone very familiar with each of these cities. That would be a big help in organizing, getting around and knowing where to go.

Ding ding ding! You are right. Savannah is choice number 12.

i think you're right, but i also think the locals will come out of the woodwork once the destination is chosen, so that shouldn't have any weight when making our decision.
edit: go on ye, puppy.

Ah, but appetite has driven the preliminary list more than such mundane and practical considerations. But it's a good thought for the voting.

The polls are up dudes!! Get thee to a votery!!

How long we gonna leave em up VP?
A week?

i saw let these up for a week, then a week to figure out the timeframe, and then a final vote on the location that we can leave up until the end of the year.
"let's go/fris-co"
Naw, I put a two day ticker on the primary polls. They will all time out around 12:30 EST Wednesday night/ Thursday morning.

why not give them some time?
why not give them some time?
I figure that 48 hrs is enough time that all of our diehards will have a chance to vote. The people who live on these boards every day, and actually post here and are known to each other are the people who most need a chance to weigh in. The rest are welcome to vote and welcome to come to the meetup, but probably won't want to. If you hadn't posted here enough for the full regular membership to know your name and have some sense of your personality, would you travel to another (possibly distant) city to meet a big group of people who have no idea who you are?
That and I'm just impatient, I guess. I like to plan things well in advance, especially when it involves a fairly big investment of time and money. Talking something to death, beyond the parameters of necessary planning, kills the spirit of it for me and I don't even want to do it anymore.
Right now, I want us to lock down definite plans over the next week so that we can dig even deeper into the possibly great things we can do for cheap at our destination. Getting all the basics ironed out as early as possible, keeps the spirit alive and helps the research and preparation go even deeper. The payout is a better experience. With enough of a heads-up, I may even be able to go to our destination a day or two early and serve as pointman for everybody.
Edit: Of course, if Austin takes the final vote, I'll leave that to Daley.

there's plenty of regulars who aren't here everyday that will kill to get to the meetup, if possible, and who probably want to put their vote down. morey, for one; brak, six on the dot, rachelgita for a few others. i don't think an extra two or three days is going to matter much to you and i when we're talking about something that we've got 6 months to plan, so just as there's no need to talk the issue to death, there's also no reason to rush to a decision.

Well, okay. I'll extend the deadline on our preliminary polls.

you're a saint, mi amigo.
edit: not that it matters. seems like it'll be either austin or san fran.

Yeah. Unless a bunch of people who can't get their primary pick jump on San Fran and swing it, it's going to be Austin.
I changed the polls to 5 days instead of 2 days.
Oh, by the way, I might be in New York for New Years (aka: my birthday!). So regardless whether we choose to go here for the meetup, I'm going to see the sites. Unless I can't get a relatively cheap airplane ticket, in which case I'll probably settle for Vegas again.
me too, well its not my birthday, but I might be in New York for New Years as well.
Anyways, how many other cities have a 4 a.m. last call? And how many other cities can you find 20 bars within five minutes worth of walking, all of them cool enough to warrant at least a drink? How many cities boast as many museums, amazing parks and attractions as New York? Where else can you get really good Indian food or pizza or Chinese or Etheopian or really whatever you want, in the middle of the night, just because?
there's bars around here with 5am calls on weekends. and you can find all that other stuff that you mentioned. and the pizza is better. though not as much is 24 hour as New york, which kinda ticks me off sometimes.

The pizza in Chicago is NOT better. That is blasphemy in the worst sense of the word.

SO MUCH BETTER! seriously, deep dish is where its at.
Mexico!
SO MUCH BETTER! seriously, deep dish is where its at.
Lay off the crack. Deep dish pizza is disgusting. NYC pizza is the best anywhere.
Deep Dish pizza is tasty! Only for an occasional treat though, it gets tiresome after a while.
SO MUCH BETTER! seriously, deep dish is where its at.
I can't even look at you.
Do you have taste buds?
Pizza is art. It's about subtelty. Chicago pizza makers throw everything they can at the pie. Pizza doesn't taste good when all you can taste is the dough. It's a balancing act between various factors, and a deep dish pizza overshadows the rest of it. Besides the fact that the sauce is sub-par -- there couldn't have been an Italian within 1000 feet of it being made -- and the mozzarella just doesn't work.
This isn't even an arguement. It's not even a contest.

Hyperbole.
Point is, it's the least Italian sauce I've ever had in my life. It's like ketchup. I'm close to full-blooded Irish and I cook a more authentic Italian sauce than probably most pizza makers in Chicago.
