This is not okay. If you believe that women deserve the right to access free healthcare, HIV testing, birth control and more you need to take action now. If these bills pass it will be a huge step backwards in women's rights. planned parenthood has been providing free healthcare and sex education to women for 95 years. Let's make sure it will still be here for our daughters and theirs.

Go to http://WWW.ppaction.org now to take a stand.

How about instead of agitating money be taken from everyone to fund your cause, you just do something to support it yourself.

You don't see me demanding money be stolen from you.

They're all ready taking the money. It's not like this cit will result in a tax break for everyone. If you want to argue that the government shouldn't fund anything then please, take it somewhere else.

The only effective response is to call your Congressperson's office and ask them not to cut the funding.

I'll leave it to the individual to Google their own Congressperson's number.

this is a more logical cut than the following (which are all happening to some extent, or being considered):
-public safety (who thought that was a good idea)
-disability services (which include services to keep people in their homes, which is cheaper than putting them in a care facility, and would eliminate jobs for thousands of people - not to mention it would violate the olmstead act)
-food stamps (poor people gotta eat more than they need to stop ovulating)
-public broadcasting (like disability cuts, these are not cost effective, they would hurt the economy and likely put thousands out of work)

The people who are pushing these bills aren't doing so because of budget concerns. They and anti-choice left wingers who think any facility associated with abortion should not be eligible for federal funding. They are concerned with their own ideologies.

Actually, there is a lot of evidence that planned parenthood and legalized abortion actually result in fewer people on welfare, fewer people in poverty and lower crime rates.

Because, as you can imagine, the people who tend to benefit most from planned parenthood services are people who are already not well-off. Just like it isn't a surprise that abstinence-only sex education programs lead to higher rates of teen pregnancy.

Putting them on the streets is free. It's what Regan did for the mentally ill and it worked marvelously.

As someone who could go on disability, but hasn't because he has retained at least some dignity and pride, I suggest that many if not most so-called "disabled" can lead productive working lives. The advent of the home computer and the internet mean they don't even have to get out of bed. My taxes paying for education and job training, I'm all for, but after that, you're on your own.

Cutting funds to programs definitely has horrible consequences. Here's a link to an example but I'm going to quote some of it below:

Mom of Three Dies in ER After Being Ignored for 45 Minutes

According to numerous press reports, Rodriguez was then ignored for more than 45 minutes, even after falling to the floor in pain and vomiting blood. In a closed-circuit TV tape, a janitor is seen mopping the floor around her body as she writhes in pain.

911 tapes recently released to The Los Angeles Times have reignited indignation over Rodriguez’s treatment at King-Harbor hospital. Jose Prado, the boyfriend of Edith Rodriguez, as well as an unidentified patient at the hospital, both called 911 to plead for help only to be rebuffed.

Prado apparently first tried to talk to hospital staff and then the on-site LAPD office at the hospital before calling 911. He asked that paramedics be called to transport Rodriguez to another hospital because she was not getting helped.

"I’m in the emergency room, my wife is dying, and the nurses don’t want to help her out," said Prado to the 911 dispatcher on the newly released tapes. After explaining that she was vomiting blood, the dispatcher told him that because they were already at a hospital, paramedics could not be sent.

Eight minutes later, a female patient also called 911 to ask for help for Rodriguez. "There’s a lady on the ground here in the emergency room at Martin Luther King and they are overlooking her, they claim she’s been discharged, and she’s definitely sick and there’s a guy that’s ignoring her." The dispatcher told the caller that it was not a medical emergency and that she should talk to staff at the hospital. "I cannot do anything for you for the quality of the hospital. It is not an emergency, ma’am."

Responded the caller, "You’re not here to see how they are treating her." Despite the woman’s pleas, the 911 dispatcher would not send an ambulance to a patient who was already at a hospital and insisted several times that it was not an emergency. "May God strike you too for acting the way you just acted," said the caller.

After the police officers at the hospital ran a background check on Rodriguez, they discovered a no-bail warrant for her arrest. They came into the ER to take her into police custody, after assuring her boyfriend that she would receive medical care. After wheeling Rodriguez outside to a squad car, they found her unresponsive when requesting she get into the car. They were unable to revive her, and she was pronounced dead shortly after.

The cops basically arrested her so they could transport her to another hospital.

Though I agree with you on this fact, my personal opinion is that neither needs to be cut. In both instances we are talking about social programs that cost next to nothing when compared to other line items on the budget.

If we are serious about cutting the budget, I can think of a place where we could easily save $400 billion. Cut the military budget in half and bring our troops home. Not just from Iraq and the middle east but from the bases of wars long since over. Germany, japan, etc. Of course, only a few in the government will even bring this up.

The fact is cutting planned parenthood is an ideological item, not one that will actually be a positive net gain for the country. Anyone who says it is about saving money is lying directly in your face. If you don't want people getting abortions or using condoms, that's your opinion, but at least be honest about it.

its not that easy though. if you're someone like me who has a very visible disability, it doesnt matter if you're way over-qualified for a position. every position i have applied for, where i would be insured, i have been turned away from. didnt matter if i was laughably over-qualified.

everyone acts like things like the ADA made life so much better for people in my position, and i would argue that all it did was eliminate 'ugly laws' and make people feel better.

that said, when i get out of college i will have a masters in english and be more than fit to teach anywhere, and based on the first thirty years of my life, people will still look at my wheelchair before my resume.

You're proving my point. Repeal the ADA. No one is stopping anyone from starting their own business and earning their own living. This is America; swim or sink.

yeah.
like i said no one wants to hire me, and i need money to get new wheelchairs and clothes from second hand stores. since i get less money than the zit faced idiot who delivers my pizza. dont act like i make tons of money, and im living some pampered life on your dime. i live WELL below the poverty line, and thats how the system likes it.

im not one of those people (i can tell you're referring to) who has foodstamps, subsidized housing, and full disability. i work with disability advocacy groups, and i know the kind of people who do that, and im not one of those people. i know someone who has been on housing for fifteen years, he has his utilities compensated, likely gets foodstamps, and he's in his sixties, so im sure he's 'retired' and getting social security on top of all that.

no.
the state pays for a new (cheapest possible) rigid frame chair once every five years or so.
the average rigid frame (cheapest possible) wheelchair lasts about three.

I'm not going to comment on what it must be like having to live like that or go through dealing with that sort of shit. I'm sure it can be tough as hell.

But you have to admit, if you benefit from a social program (using the term benefit loosely here), it is a little odd that you can prioritize other social programs. I mean, technically, I'm the one paying for all of them. And I do think that the right thing to do is help out people who need it. And though there is a distinction between food, disability and planned parenthood, I do think they are all important.

And like I said before, considering the tiny part of the budget these things make up, I don't see any reason to cut any of them. Especially when there are so many other things we should cut, that don't actually benefit people.

oh, im not prioritizing, im just saying that the other cuts are either for life sustaining programs (see foodstamps, ssi, human services) or impact the economy (homecare work employs a thousand people in oregon alone) which are more detrimental than giving people birth control pills.

in the last depression people just stopped having sex...

You don't seem to see how cutting birth control and access to family planning counselling would create a greater need for things like foodstamps and ssi...

It's a little to late for your mother to agree, and we're stuck with paying for YOU, so be nice and pay for our birth control.

(That's not really how I feel about disabled people but that fucking CLOSE YOUR LEGS comment deserves it.)

Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. I can't tell if you're being a self-righteous cunt to get a rise out of people or if you really are one. But either way, you're not winning anyone over to your side here.

i dont pay taxes
and i do pay for michelles birth control. im doing my part

obviously though, given the city i grew up in, planned parenthood has failed anyway. given also that hillsboro oregon has no distinguishing factors from the rest of america, my example is as solid as if you picked any other town at random and used the level of pregnant teenagers with no job, living with their mothers who have no job, smoking weed and getting wic to buy them their pampers.

you want to save the country money? cut the program. it isnt working
you want to make the country money? repeal NAFTA

Anyone read Freakonomics? The authors make a very convincing argument that the legalization of abortion in the US was the main cause of the massive crime drop in the 90s....not tough on crime legislation, not more cops, not a booming economy....abortion.

Why can't "Michelle" pay for her own birth control?

You're "doing your part" by spending part of your disability check on sex??

Why don't you take your own advice and stop having sex?

Wic doesn't pay for diapers.

I think everyone seems to be about to lose their head over this.

i think thats different funding, its in a different place, anyway.

my point was never that these things were needed, or important, i think FOOD and not making people HOMELESS are more important, lest we forget condoms are cheap.

and a thousand people being unemployed in a state with a 10% unemployment rate (which is misleading because they only count people who receive unemployment and not those who are not working in general) is a lor of people

I don't think anyone gives a shit what YOU think is important any longer; you've lost all credibility.

You pay for your GF's birth control off your disability checks.

You won't answer why she can't pay/provide for her own birth control.

You throw out that you can't get a job with INSURANCE because you're disabled. That sucks. Why don't you get a job that doesn't offer insurance? Lots of us do.

No, you just collect your checks, and complain and have sex at our expense.
