"Bring Em On"
Possibly the single most offensive statement of the past decade.

and now we've got troops poised to go into liberia.
bush has no right to say that since he went AWOL for 2 years during vietnam. Bring em on indeed
what the emperor penguin is doing to the little guy in your avatar is what i'd like to do to some people in our government. slap some sense into them.
definitely, man. i'd love to see that.
"My fellow Americans--" *fram lays down the bitchslap*
in the 3 seconds it took secret service agents to throw you to the ground and begin pounding you mercilessly, that, my friend, would be a moment of glory.

but during that moment when the secret service is beating the shit out of you, you need to yell out FREEDOM like mel gibson did in braveheart.
or you could just accuse the secret service of trying to cop a feel. either way, it'd make for great news at 11:00pm that evening.
There seems to be no downside to this, other than the fact that framstedt might get beat to death.
There is hope, but not for us.
you're right. fram, we feel that your life is expendable enough to accomplish this act. we'll be pullin' for ya' while watching the news.
but he'd die with HONOR.
every man dies. not every man really lives (to continue the braveheart references).

Beat this... I STARTED watching it, but it began to more me silly so I stopped after about 2/3s of the movie. I wandered in at the end bit with the drawn-and-quartered stuff, mumbled, "finally", and then left.
My experience of Braveheart only goes as far as seeing a slow motion clip of him whacking some bloke in the face with a flail, which was hilariously funny since the man changed to a dummy right before it hit. Also one scene with a white Hiace van in the background. Oh, and I know a guy in the FCA who ruined one scene by wandering in holding a bottle of Coke.
Bah.
Everyone seems to remember when that guy got an arrow in the butt in braveheart. Imagine being the guy that played that role...'Oh, ya, that was me!'
It's like the guy who falls onto the propeller in Titanic...
I wonder if being Man Shot in Arse is a good way to get laid?
Bah.
As the Scottish wanted money to let the movie be filmed in Scotland, most of it was filmed in Ireland (where it was free and they were also given a large number of Irish soldiers as extras). The Irish soldiers were very enthusiastic and apparently, there were quite a few injuries in the battle scenes.
And because I'm feeling a bit geeky today, I should add that the battle of Stirling took place on a bridge, not on a plain as the movie shows. I know that bridge... It was the view from my window for months. I used to spook myself by watching the crows and imagining them pecking on the eyes of dead English soldiers... And one more thing before I shut up: near the Wallace Monument (always in Stirling), they have a statue to William Wallace. Only it's not William Wallace, it's Mel Gibson. And a particularly hideous version of Gibson too. It has an inscription that reads 'FREEDOM,' but the statue kept being vandalised, so every night a metal cage goes over it. Freedom indeed...

Well, I'm not a Bush supporter in any way, but maybe he was just yelling out his love for the movie Bring 'em On.... well, maybe not.
Do you mean Bring it On, that cheerleading movie with Kirsten Dunst?
There is hope, but not for us.
epon, i'm not even going to dignify that with a response.
and your avatar scares the living bejesus out of me, i'm serious.

"It's just a shame," said Gene Tupper, a resident of Maryland since 1955. "I don't think anyone will really understand what it was like to visit the historic Antietam National Battlefield or walk along beautiful Chesapeake Bay back in the prime years. I guess all great things have to end sometime."
Any relation to you know who...?

i don't get the "bring them on" thing... what happened? i don't watch the news. although, if i were pres, i'd say in my speaches some things that were roosevelt-ish... i'd tell the american people to stop being such pussies. you enlist in the military and services, you really should expect to die. sucks for the spectators and all, but really, bring those fuckers on! whoever those fuckers are. if i were president, we'd stop being such pussies.
thank you.

I like George double-u Bush. He makes me giggle. I also like them funny pictures of those Who-sane boys that died. They are dead and I like to see them pictures of all their bodies. Those special boys were autopsied. How I know? Easy, I am magic.

to quote fram, war drums beat along the charles.
kenny, darling, because this is you, i'm going to try to take it easy on the following rant. but seriously, think for a minute. the problem isn't that we don't expect deaths in war. the problem is that we *do* expect deaths in war, and that is why many of us oppose it when it is undertaken needlessly. and if there must be war undertaken needlessly, some of us believe that it could at least be done with a smidgen less arrogance by the man in charge. the statement wasn't roosevelt-esque; it was more like dan-quayle-esque.
but the greater problem with the statement that started this thread is the fact that Bush was saying it in answer not only to the question of attacks on American soldiers in Iraq but to the possibility of retaliatory attacks on American civilians. so the statement is hugely problematic more because of the fact that it was said by the man who has shown himself willing to curtail our civil liberties in order to "protect our freedom", and to protect us, ostensibly, while there's still a giant hole/mass gravesite in downtown manhattan. for someone who throws the specter of 9/11 in everyone's face in response to dissent, to say such a callous, short-memoried statement when it suits him is disgusting, insulting, most of all STUPID, and degrading to our country as a whole.
in my opinion, at least.

what our country does on a daily basis in private and in public could be taken as disgraceful to many as well. it's only a matter of opinion. i understand.
i think the guy (gw.jr's) makes mistakes in his speaches and is missunderstood. if i had the speach or whatever it is that this came from, i'd be able to defend my client in a more aggressive fashion, but i don't. hehe i really do think that in saying bring it on is close to a move in poker. while i'm blindly confident that nothing will happen to this nation again, not as bad as the something that everyone calls 9/11, i think gw's showing an arrogance that's sometimes important to be shown by a president. to us in this nation it might make us scared the bad people will be like, "oh yeah, we'll bring it on! we'll bring it right up your asses!" but i think it's to show that the first terrorist thing hardly phased us and this war hasn't phased us... yet? maybe, but just about everything this man says is taken as if he was a witness on some huge court hearing. THE witness. perhaps he should shove a cigar into an intern's vag to get a little more understanding from his people, but i don't think that'll happen... maybe we can wish on a star or something for better speaches, or a cigar story to make headlines.... truth is, nay sayers hate him, defenders like myself like him. it's all opinion. it's all 4 years and then...
"the bad people", i think, is the point at which we fundamentally differ.

so long as i am referred to frammy the bruce i have no problems with accepting this mission.
looks like we'll be landing troops in liberia on wednesday. what next? north korea has been awful quiet, that is, unless you think they're threatening to build a nuclear arsenal is being quiet.
i don't think we'll land on north korea, because we've been there before. it would be like telling people "we're going back to vietnam."
not that we're not going back to vietnam in the figurative sense anyway.
