American school system (woah the interesting-ness)
yeh, so i was just wondering if a very patient american with a sympathetic mouth could explain the american school system for me? like what age you are in what grades, when you go from kindergarten to junior to senior to high school, what the hell sophomore means etc blah blah.
and also what the fuck is a sorioty (sp?) club?
rargh sorry just watching american films is frustrating when they mention school (por ejemplo, "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school" - when do you go to grade school?!)
so yeh urmm please reply i'm confused
In kindergarted, you are usually 6 or 5. In first you are 6-7, second 8-9. Third: nine-ten. Fourth: ten-eleven. Fifth:eleven-twleve. sixth: 12-13. 7th: 12-13. 8th: 13-14. Ninth:14-15. Tenth: 14-15. 11th: 15-16. 12th:16-18. And there are 180 school days in a school year. And there area always exceptios to the age groups. Some kids skip a grade, some stay behind. Some never go to school, so they have to start a couple of years behind there age group.
One fucked up thing about American schools is that they're different all over the US. For example, I never attended a junior high. I went to elementary school (Kindergarten-4), middle school (5-8), and high school (9-12). I know some kids that have gone to elementary school (K-6), junior high (7-9), and high school (10-12). After that, it's on to colleges, universities, or work. It's at the colleges or universities that they have sororities and fraternities. These are alternative living styles for those that feel they need to separate themselves from everybody else. These organizations have houses which they buy (they're given money by the school and alumni of their frat or sorority) and live in. The frats spend a majority of their money on booze and trying to get chicks wasted enough to take advantage of them, while the sororities spend their money on making their houses look nice. Of course, I'm kind of against the Greek system, so maybe you'll want to get a second opinion on them.
Mine is different.
K-6 - Grade School
7-8 - Junior High
9-12 - High School

While your grades are different (e.g. elemtery for you was kindergarten-4), you still went to junior high. Junior High and Middle School are the same thing. Just different names. At least they are where I live.
yeah i went to middle school too. only when i went it was grades 6 thru 8, now it's 5 thru 9. what freak of nature decided to put 5th graders in the same school with people who are *supposed* to be freshmen in high school?

Mine is 6-8.
I went to both middle & junior high, heh.
Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd I went to a private catholic school, that extended all the way to 8th, but I moved first.
Went from 3rd to half-way through 5th at an elementary, then moved again.
Half-way through 5th to 6th in a middle school.
7-8th = Junior High.
9-12th = High school.
And the junior high and middle school were not because I moved, they were in the same district and both schools just had 2 grades.
are you an army brat disx?

Erm. No?
Army brat? I mean, I'm thinkg you mean am/was I in the army? No. If ther is some other meaning for it... Please inform me.
She means are/were you the son of a person in the army. And this is going to be another really weird connection if she says she was brat. I was an AF brat at one point, but then both folks got out. There's a lot of moving around when you're a brat. In 1st grade, I was in 3 different classrooms during the course of the year.
Ah.. Okay, I was thinking that, but not sure...
No, I'm not.
thanks for the explanation rents. ::smooch.:: i wuv ooo!!!

that's weird unbeliever.

Haha, oh yeah... Intermediate. That's actually what I went to, not middle school. But I did go to Junior High, still...
intermediate sounds like a euphemism...

My German teacher has explained Germany's school system and it makes much more sense. I cannot remember how it all works out though.

I never had a middle school or junior high.
It went - K-7 as elementary school and 8-12 high school (I'm still in it, though).
I sleep/slept through most of it, though.

what do you guys study then? like what's compulsory when, and what other stuff you can choose, like over here we have to do maths, english and science until we're 16, but at 14 we get to choose what else we study on top of that for our GCSE's (which we take at 16)
Good topic. I've always been meaning to ask a yank about that, because I usually had to figure it out on the basis of common sense.
Over here in Australia it's pretty simple... Kindergarten & grades 1 thru 6 are primary school. 7 through 12 are high school. That's it. No names. Just numbers. Only one school change, mostly, although there's always a few specialist type colleges that have, for example, just year 11 & 12.

ok, how it works is, there are 12 grades. most people start 1st grade when theyre about 7 years old. kindergarten is before 1st grade. elementary school is grades 1 through 5, junior high is 6 - 8, and highschool is 9 to 12. in highschool, they dont call it grade 9, 10, 11, 12. 9th grade is freshman, 10th is sophomore, 11th is junior and 12th is senior. i'm not quite sure what grade school means, i've never heard that term used in real life.
