60 Years Ago Today...
Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1.

In more recent news, 6 years ago today, I first joined the Cult as karbunkle. Six years. What's worse is that's not even the depressing part. The depressing part is that I spent no time whatsoever in my 20's on here. Going to go drink some Drano, brb.
It looks like a little paper plane!
It's GIANT and ORANGE!
Orange is good. I like orange.
What's the sound barrier? 1,400 mph? I think I'm way off there. I'm going to look it up.
1,236 kilometers per hour (768 mph)
I must have been thinking in metric.
That's pretty fucking fast still.

I think it's half of that, around 700 mph.
!
about 760 mph. I think at sea level it's only 660 though.
Holy shit, look at this!

Hold on, doesn't in travel faster at higher densities? That would mean it should be faster at sea level.
!

I am completely impressed. I like visuals.
So what is that plane?
i've been here a little more than half as long as you.
(wow, way to make this about you levi.)

F-18 Hornet
And then there's this one. But I'm pretty sure it's a fake. B-52s weren't built to go supersonic. Still, jaw-dropping impressive if you've ever seen how big they are in real life.

Yeah, that second one is definately fake, look at the vapour underneath the plane!

this sorts it out a little
I read an article last spring that said they had some fancy-shpancy new plane that was expected to break mach 10, or something like that.
I guess technically the space shuttle does that already. It's going 25,000 mph just to stay in orbit.
Nevermind, Mach 10 would have to be like 76,000mph. Fuck! How could a human being even withstand that kind of pressure!
Edit, the second:
nevermind again. 7,600mph...
MAAAAAAAACH 10!
Mik, to answer your question, the denser the air, the more resistance you get. It's like water. You can't run worth shit in water, but you're fine in fog.
And Pepper, I heard about a plane like that but it would be for passenger flights. It would fly at really high altitude, and get you across the world like uber fast. It was probably a concept idea though. I saw it in 8th grade. that was like 7 years ago.

I don't think resistance comes into it, sound isn't an object moving through the medium, it's a motion of the particles of the medium itself. Sound travels further and faster in water than it does in air. I think this is because in denser fluids the chance of molecular collision is higher, so less energy is lost as the sound travels.
!
This was some airforce plane, like a super sexy jet or something, I read about, they actually made it and were going to begin test flights. It was just a tiny little blip in the corner of the newspaper, because celebrity shit was busy being all interesting and taking up the main pages.
Did you know the SR-71 is built to only have just enough fuel in it to take off the ground? It's then refueled in mid-air. The reason is because sitting on the ground the fuel just pours right out onto the ground, when it gets in the air the plane stretches to pull all it's metal and gaskets tight.

I was thinking it might have more to do with the molecular structure of the liquid water itself. Would the speed be the same, or similar, in other fluids you think?

Wait, no. Apparently it all comes down to the elastic modulus of the medium. The bonds between molecules are stronger in liquids and solids so sound travels faster.

YAY for Nate! Making an interesting topic!
If a plane breaks the sound barrier in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still give off a sonic boom?

YAY for Nate! Making an interesting topic!
I have to come clean. It's all based on a fraud though. This is actually the 62nd anniversary of the first supersonic flight. I was just wondering if anyone would look it up and call me out on my shit.

I actually did look it up on wikipedia, and I think even the date is wrong because the first supersonic flight was on, like, October 14th 1947 or something.
!
Time to watch The Right Stuff again.

Mik, I misread the thread. I thought the question was about how fast the plane was moving, rather than the sound barrier.
unmanned aerial vehicles. they talk about that in ironman !!
anyrate, something about being unmanned and a type of jet engine that will not operate below the speed of sound.

It would have to work slower than sound, otherwise how would it even get up to the speed of sound?
I have spent exactly half of my 20's at the cult, and plus another few years as a teen for good measure.
Also in high school, I broke a rib two different times. Whenever I'd complain about not being able to do anything, my dad would say, "Chuck Yeager broke the SOUND BARRIER with a broken rib. All you're trying to do is wait tables after school." Fuck you, Chuck Yeager.
There is hope, but not for us.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Also, if one were somehow able to stand on the outside of a plane travelling at supersonic speeds, and one were to fart over a forest...
I forget where I was going with this.
if it ain't a clickable link I ain't clicking it.
i guess that's safari for ya. i'll have to remember to stay on firefox whilst i cult.

What happens in that airplane coming out of an egg pic, is that the plane is just crossing the sound barrier and it compresses the steam condenses (really fast) and forms a cloud round the plane. ueah!

Did you know that it was 60 years ago today that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play?
It seems like they've been going in and out of style.

Holy crap, I've been here longer than you.
Was there a 'Cult' before 2003? That's the first time I see any join dates, but some of the math you guys are throwing around makes it seem like it was longer.
The site launched in 1999, but there have been numerous revamps/CMS switches. "official" join dates are the vBulletin days forward (I think)...

i aint here to live, i'm just here to dream
GO OUTSIDE!

I did. It was cold and rainy, so I came back in.
Wimp!
