Windows Vista
Hi, I'm getting a laptop soon, but every laptop I see, it says "Preloaded with Windows Vista" I heard it is a great program. But I hear its kind of bad. Does it prevent you from downloading certain files? I heard that it doesnt let you download anything without a copywrite. (Which means no more limewire) Can anyone tell me if I should get Vista, and what it does?

Sowwy for putting it in the wrong thread place.

you should be "sowwy." i, too, have questions involving vista. theyre not questions so much as "tell me the pros and cons of vista by comparison to xp."

I bought a lap top (HP) a little under a month ago and it has Windows Vista on it. I haven't had any problems whatsoever as far as downloading off the Internet (Limewire), searching without constant security promps as the Mac comerrcials suggest happen frequently, which they don't, or anything of the like. The only time these promps open are when you're downloading a new program (like iTunes), but thats just a measure most systems take to insure programs aren't being donwloaded on your PC without your knowledge.
I can't tell you how different it is from the XP as I was old school and still had Windows ME (sad, I know) on my old PC. From what I've heard from XP users that have seen the Vista work is that it downloads pictures and files a lot easier, but there are more files and file locations that might be necessary or needed to search through that might be a time consuming ordeal.
The only complaint I have about some of the new software is the software that expires after a couple of months that you are expected to purchase if you wish to continue to use it later, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Picture Editor (I thnk) being some examples.

great thread.. i've been toying with the motivation to rebuild Becki (my old computer that has been out of commission for a couple of years now that i can make a tough badass bitch outta, with the duo processors huge HDs with massive caches and sound and vid cards that can put a man on Mars and ram cards that are far less expensive than just two years ago, elements that are readily available now) and install vista. i just havent played with the software as of yet, but i'm always interested in reading more personal thoughts on the OS

I've been using Vista since Feb 3rd. I love it. If you can spring for Ultimate, get it. Also, if you prefer to do a clean install, I can send you a little workaround. That way you're not forcing Vista over XP. It's working great for me. It's pretty, you can link files to keep them organized (great for writers with lotsa research stuff). There are some kinks, but it's mainly on the hardware side where some vendors haven't gotten on the ball and gotten new drivers out. Check your hardware, make sure the supplier has moved out of the beta phase on drivers, and you'll be fine.
Does anyone have an Acer laptop, Im wondering if the brand is reliable. Im going to buy one of them soon.

Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
I've had no issues with iTunes and Vista. They seem to get along well.

Back in the Windows 95 days, I had an Acer Desktop that was very trusty. It has a 3 GB Hard Drive!! haha.
Well, the Acer laptop im getting is 160 GB of memory, 1024mb RAM(which im going to upgrade) and some other cool stuff. Its super cheap for what you get. And i get a free printer +anti virus stuff for free!

But do you get the free oral pleasure that you can get from a Gateway? Didn't think so.

Ahhh, Maybe i'll buy a gateway! It sounds like a much better deal! :You_Rock_

I had an Acer, and I hated it.
That's all I have to say.

Why did you hate it?

I seen the Vista on someone else's computer the other day. It's looked like a crappy version of a Mac. Duh!
Seemed fine, the fella was happy as a nerd at a nerd convention.

Ok well today i was at Circuit City. Some dumbshit employee insists on installing everything on my laptop. I said fuck it, why not. Well, I just found out that this dude has like never even used a computer. So I was all excited about picking it up right about now, but now my computer won't accept nortan antivirus. So this nerd is gonna fix it tomorrow, right now i am really pissed off.

Dude, read teh other thread about how Norton sucks dick, there have been loads of issues with Norton 2007. They have a new thing out called Norton 360, maybe they fixed the problems in that. I switched to Trend Micro, covers up to 3 computers, but can be a bit of a memory hog, not sure about the status of Vista compatibility though.
This is a really good idea.

I have an Acer TravelMate 2451. I've had it since last Oct and I had no problems with it. The only lil thing was the battery konked on me just recently. I phoned the company and they sent me a new one. It runs on WinXP, which in my humble opinion is a lil slow, but that's windows for you. I love my lappy, she's my gf. Besides Acer is affordable, when I upgrade, it'll be to another Acer.
Or you could buy a MAC and circumvent all these 'possible' hassles and issues. The more I think of it, I realize none of my MACs have ever crashed, gotten a virus or done anything ... well... wrong.
Except this new one, iMac with the Pentium chips, yeah ... turns out Windows will crash on a MAC just as easily as on a PC. Luckily, that doesn't hurt the MAC at all.
I love those MAC commercials, too. It's so true it's almost sad.

Umm, everything is working good, but I can't find out how to change the contrast/ color intensity of the screen, not just a window. Any help?

I don't care what any of you say, Vista is terrible. It's buggy, certain hardware isn't supported [until microsoft fixes it's shit], and it feels like using OSX [i would rather shoot myself]. I wish people would just stick with what works [Windows 2000 and good ol' linux], but that won't happen until people pull their heads out of there asses and stop buying up all the latest bullshit Microsoft pulls out of it's economically perverted ass crevice.
Ok.

I probably should have kept in mind that every new operating system Microsoft puts out sucks, even my beloved Windows 2000. Vista just sucks the hardest.
I want to get a Mac. Every PC I have ever had has fucked up in some way.

Use Linux
I recommend Linspire for newbies, then Ubuntu for someone with a little more patience, although that is getting quite good and is available now pre-installed on Dell or System76.
I'm thinking of getting a Mac Mini myself due to the lower power requirements (~22 Watts reported when idle). I want to use that as my "server" for media files and whatnot, and mainly web browsing and e-mail, then I can power up my power hog Windows PC for gaming, or the Linux box for work.
This is a really good idea.
I've had very few problems with my Vista.

Ditto.

easy solution: BUY A MAC!!!!!
I used windows up until two years ago when my boyfriend and I moved in together. I ended up buying a MacBook. Best decision ever. Everything makes so much sense and is so easy to use. And if you need windows for school or work or are just retarded and like it, you can run windows on your Mac. Unfortunately I still have to use windows on everyday at work....

Mac mini's are great, my boyfriend has one and loves it. the only thing he complains about is that lack of storage, but Mac's make it easy to use external devices. Check out PS3's too....they can do alot and they're fast as hell and are relatively inexpensive for everything they can do
I'm a fan of windows and I hate windows vista. It's slow as hell. WHen you first get it, every time you install something or try to run a program, the screen goes all shady and a dialogue box opens saying, "Windows is trying to run this program. Is that alright?" The thing takes longer to start than my previous, older, less powerful computer which was running XP. Also, it comes loaded with tons of programs set to start up with your computer, none of which are any good. Screw google desktop and screw windopws vista.

In Windows XP that kinda shit was in My Computer -> Right Click -> Properties -> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings -> Visual Effects, you could also get to it through Control Panel -> Classic View -> System. Sorry, but I don't know if it's buried in a similar place in Vista, try searching the microsoft website for something like "vista visual effects settings".
This is a really good idea.

Also, somebody's been telling you some buuuuuulshit about that copywrite stuff!
Files is files. Its just another version of windows with pretty stuff, better searching tool, security improvement stuff and some other small changes.
