Windows 7
Excellent, that's what I was hoping. I'm picking it up on the way home tonight.
Did you do a fresh install or upgrade install?
You can't upgrade from XP, if that is what you're doing. It will require a format and install. You can upgrade from Vista, though I can't comment on that process.
Either way, I never do upgrade installs on an OS.
Same. Does it have an option for a clean install in the upgrade version like Vista did?
I think so, but I don't recall since when I installed it I did so on a new PC that I built, so the hard drive was blank.
I'm running an i7 with 6GB of ram, and the 64bit version of Win7 smokes. The driver support was mind blowing too. I have a 7 or 8 year old HP all in one machine, when I plugged it in, Win7 saw it, then automatically fond and installed drivers from the internet. In like 5 minutes it was running.
You're going to love the new taskbar. It totally changes the way you use windows.
That's cool. I tried to recreate it with a bunch of apps...but it really didn't do anything but slow me down.
Were you able to get the 64bit version retail?
Mine is an official release candidate from Microsoft, so I'll have to buy one before March, when it will start nagging you to get an actual copy. So I haven't actually bought it yet.
When I do, I'll just pick up a copy of 64 Pro OEM from newegg for like $150.
odd, this bit of coincidence..
im currently using xp home sp3 and it's time to reformat the comp anyway
oddly enough, i do this every six months (except, that is, when that time conflicts with the months i plan my own wedding) and never back anything up. i just save my pics and muzzic to thumb drives. i like to start clean and so never got around to learning how to back shit up. anyrate, i'm going to seriously consider the se7en os now.
i wasnt excited about the prospect til reading this thread

It really is great dude. All the commercials they are running about how solid it is, are not bullshit. So far, all the techy people I know who have been using it for the last few months love it.
There are a few new concepts to get familiar with when switching from XP, but once you do, they make so much sense.
Incidentally, the dvd in the package for home premium includes both the 32 and 64 bit version
.
Backup time!
Do you still need a separate antivirus program for "internet security".
I'm lying.
absolutely.
The upgrade advisor is telling me my graphics adapter isn't compatible....which is insane since it was compatible with vista. I think it's detecting my onboard video instead of my Geforce 7900 GTX.
Almost ready to upgrade...just backing up more stuff.
Yeah, the nvidia drivers are win 7 ready, so it is probably your onboard card. You should disable that in your bios anyhow.
So when are you holding your Windows 7 party? Or is this it?
!
I initially had it enabled due to a mobo blow out and my PCI-E slot was toast. I thought it was the card, which was alot like dying inside.
Perhaps after I finish installing. I started the install process and went upstairs to rock my son. When I got back it was already done dumping and expanding the files. Which is new to me. I'm interested in seeing how much faster the start up time is.
Yeah, I think it took me maybe 30 minutes to do an install from scratch. And on my machine I am logged in in easily 45 secs or less.
Had the rc on my netbook for a bit, I think I might buy some nice components and go for a new build machine this weekend. It's looking very tasty.
"What cha readin' fer??"
I really can't find anything to complain about so far. I want to find something because of how blindly I let myself walk into Vista. There are a lot of things that just seem faster to me.
dammit, guys, I'm trying to SAVE MONEY! Why must y'all tempt me like this?!
ONE OF US
ONE OF US
Damn you guys I just ordered a shit tonne of components & 7...
"What cha readin' fer??"
kirk and jim (that actually sounds kinda funny now that i write it out)
i have mcafee currently but lost the software. when i do a fresh install, i will lose it and my burning "nero" program.
i aim to buy roxio because i think it will prove better than the current nero i have
but, i dont want to purchase another anti virus program if avg works just as well. a few months ago, i was hit with a full page of attacks. it was immediate and flags were flying all over the screen as mcafee worked it's magic. i reset the computer and it came back fine. did a v-scan just on general principle and both drives were clean.
in your opinion, would i be just as well protected with "afg" or should i invest the fifty bucks for mcafee again ?
thanks, as always

i think if you have a .edu email address you're ok but deets are in there somewhere
I am a school teacher! I get ULTIMATE for 99 bucks...ordering now...
A clean install will delete everything on your computer. Including files and any programs. I prefer nod32 antivirus, because it is pretty lightweight and everything I've read says it works better than most others.
I also greatly prefer Nero to Roxio, but I admit I haven't used Roxio in a few years so it's possible it got better.
never even heard of nod32
but, man..

For someone like me, who really only uses the computer for basic stuff, and internet, and isn't really into all the technical stuff, is there any benefit of doing a clean install, or would it be fine to do the upgrade.
OR
should I just wait until I need a new computer, because we all know this is going to be on new machines soon.
Do you have Vista or XP? You can't do an upgrade from XP without doing a clean install.
I'm always skeptical that upgrade installs will work, so I never bother with them. I guess if it seems shitty, you can just do a clean install then.
I'm on Vista. I'm just wanting to get the speed up, because shit's slower than it could be. I might just wait though. At some point in the future, I want to invest in a desktop.
to add to kirk's comment, a clean install will force you to back up data, which you should be doing anyway on a regular basis.
I also greatly prefer Nero to Roxio, but I admit I haven't used Roxio in a few years so it's possible it got better.
I prefer kaspersky (especially since I paid for it for two years). It was the lightest weight at the time but apparently norton 2009 takes a smaller footprint now, which sounds just absurd.
Kaspersky is the version I would use if Nod32 wasn't so awesome.
I have Kaspersky, but at Thanksgiving, when they start giving all of the antivirus stuff away for free at Frys and whatnot, I'm gonna switch to Nod32.
Does the 32 denote that it's best on 32-bit platforms? Is there a Nod64?
There is a 64 bit edition. Don't know if they sell it at retail, I've only ever downloaded it directly from them.
If you buy it from their website, you can choose the 32 or 64 bit installer.
What does Nod stand for?
The acronym NOD stands for Nemocnica na Okraji Disk ("Hospital at the end of the disk"), a pun related to the Czechoslovakian medical drama series Nemocnica na okraji mesta (Hospital at the End of the City).
I totally wasn't expecting an answer like that.
I thought it meant Norton on Demand or something. Who makes it?
A company named Eset
i found out today that i misunderstood the other day
i thought, since i cant upgrade from xp, that i'd have to purchase the "full" version of seven. that's why i didnt and just reinstalled my regular software. i was right AND wrong. i can buy the upgraded $119.99 version instead of the $199.99 version. only, when i install it, it will be a full, fresh install. basically what i just did, but with windows seven. ho hum. likely when i get back from the honeymoon in the third quarter of this next month.
in the meantime, i have a question and i cant seem to find an answer on amazon-
i am thinking of purchasing nod32 3.0, because it's thirty bux and that's an acceptable cost to me right now. will that be compatible with windows seven when i finally get it in a month or so ?
i dont wanna invest in an anti virus i cant use with the newer o.s.
im using avg currently, because it's quick and easy, but it is making me nervous. dont wanna take a hit because i am thrifty and watching my pennies so that my dollars can take care of themselves, or however the saying goes..
thanks much

Yes, it will be compatible with Win 7.
Also, go on newegg and buy an OEM version of Win7, it's a lot cheaper and you don't have to deal with the whole "upgrade" version later on.
i entered my .edu address and they sent me a link for the $29.99 deal. no real verification, it just needs to be an active school email address.
so if i upgrade from vista 32-bit to 7 home 32-bit, i don't have to reformat, it's just a better idea to reformat? because i'd rather not reformat.
You would not need to reformat in that scenario.
Anyone who has Snow Leopard can compare it to W7? I have a iMac. I just want to know if it's worth it to upgrade my other windows computers to Windows 7, or should i just stick with the Mac and save my money.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
What is new with the windows 7......
heeeeey. This is pretty badass.

I've been using it for a few months and love it.
Very exciting and new. Unlike Vista, I'm actually suggesting people upgrade to it.
