What's your favourite music from a video game?
Be it a single song or an entire collection, what are your favourites?
If I had to pick one, I think Final Fantasy VII's soundtrack was something special. The songs really did hold the game together and deepen the whole "mythology" of the story. It was the first game to make me realise the importance of music in a video game. (I can't think of a game where music was such a huge part of the game, before FFVII.) Nobuo Uematsu, who composed the original score, went on to conduct live orchestral versions of many of the songs, which sound fantastic when rendered with classical instruments.
Don't rub my rhubarb.
Everything and anything Akira Yamaoka has ever done for the Silent Hill Series.
As far as music that adds to the gameplay, I don't think you can deny that the Halo series has always done a great job using music to really make a scene exciting.
I'll take any excuse to post this again...
I'd have to say FF7 too. I fucking LOVED that soundtrack. Then again, I loved the whole game so much when I was twelve or so that it consumed me and spat me out a different person. A lot of my current imagination is the result of spending hours on that game.

"I could have done worse!" exultantly cried the murderer Lebret, sentenced at Rouen to hard labor for life. — Félix Fénéon
Which final fantasy was it where they were in like a school or something?
Eight.

I enjoyed both of those games.
VIII. I didn't like that game.
Any final boss theme from Final Fantasy 2-7.
Almost all Castlevania music.
FALLOUT 3. BEST LICENSED SOUNDTRACK EVER

What music in particular did you like in Fallout 3?
Don't rub my rhubarb.
The Silent Hill games have great music!

Amon Tobin's soundtrack to Slinter Cell: Chaos Theory is pretty awesome. I've never actually played the game but I own the CD. This is the first track:
Butcher Pete by Roy Brown!
YEAH!!!

Harvest Moon for N64 had different music depending on the season you were in. I remember the Winter music was perfect for the scene.
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."

YEAH!!!
He's been choppin up all the women's meat!

Classic NES music performed by The Minibosses.
Megaman 2, the hardest game I ever played.
Metroid
And quite possibly the greatest of all fighting games, Mike Tyson's Punchout

My brand new 2011 halloween comp:

The music in the final chapter of Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus where Vincent Valentine takes control as Chaos.
Halo 3 soundtrack. FOREVER!
I hope you mean on hard mode because Mega Man 2 is hands down the easiest Mega Man game out there. Just spam the Metal Blade on most enemies and bam you're done in 20 minutes.
You guys remember this game?
"They sold you hippies grunge, hip hop, now liberty activism."
Almost all Castlevania music.
I was going to say that, too!
Although, I'm only familiar with Super Castlevania IV because my little brothers had it and I played it when I lived at home. I could never get past the level with the spitting mermen-things. I liked the music in the caves the best.

I can't remember how long ago this was, but I think there was a Halo commercial that had Lux Aeterna (sp?) in it. Now I really don't pay much attention to game soundtracks, but I LOOOOOVE this song. It's fucking sexy as shit.
Well i have to say that the radio stations in GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas, were freaking hilarious. I remember many times the rush of hijacking a car just to finish hearing a station if my other car blew up.
as for theme in general, i kind of like both Gears and Halo. Although in ODST the music really stands out.
I digged the opening track in Left 4 Dead 2.
MW2 has cool music in it, not as good as i thought it would be given the artist, but yeah it was ok.
I also digged the crappy garage band soundtrack from Forza 1.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
Promise from Silent Hill 2
That or ANY of the music from an Ys game.
I like Demons souls opening movie tune
and Snake eater!
And I must say that NIN/MARIO remix is impressive
I'm throwing Monkey Island II out there...

I rescue this thread from obscurity just to post the most impressive song I have heard in a game in a looooong time.
Mediocre game. Kickass soundtrack.
The Halo games have had consistently great music.
Also.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Final Fantasy VII/VIII are probably my fav. when it comes to video game music. But I'm also a fan of the original Sonic games for genesis..."Sonic and Knuckles" is my fav. game of all time...don't judge me
A lot of the music in those Sonic games were so damn catchy lol
This is pretty cool
"For most of this century, scientists have worshiped the hardware of the brain and the software of the mind; the messy powers of the heart were left to the poets."
This is probably one of the best pieces of music I have ever heard:
I used to just turn Halo 3 on and leave it at the menu screen just so I could play this over and over. I may just burn a CD with just this piece on it a bunch of times.
I think even the most ardent Halo critics can agree that the music in the games is phenomenal.

Marty O'Donnell is the absolute shit.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I'm listening to that and thinking about the people in Japan. Sad.
ooh! how to choose.
in terms of orchestral scores it has to be either Zelda, Final Fantasy or halo. they are so epic and they fit the grandeur of their respective series perfectly.
in terms of released singles i would say either:
Gakht, redemption from the end of dirge of cerberus or waiting for you from silent hill 4.
haute cature and getting hauter
I think this needs to be updated to include the Red Dead Redemption score. It gets a hell of a lot of play on my iPod.
Far and Away, as has been mentioned everywhere was used so damn brilliantly in the game. Literally the best use of music in a game that I have ever witnessed.
Triggernometry is also amazing.
There isn't a bad song in there.
I prefer Deadman's Gun.

i could never get into RDR. i hated GTA and it just reminded me of that.
haute cature and getting hauter
The later Final Fantasy (like VII to X) games were just mindblowingly good. If I had to choose a game I'd say X, but there are particular songs from each that are incredibly moving. I had really severe insomnia when I was 15-18 and listening to the FF soundtracks at night was the only thing that kept me sane, I think.
I do really dig a lot of tracks on Saints Row 2 though - I loved listening to the radio and being constantly surprised that 'that song is on here?!'.
By far, the greatest piece of music in video game history...
Si vis pacem, para bellum
A great arrange from a great song from Xenogears the best RPG of all time (and if you like game music you shold check the OCREMIX PAGE)
and I just can't resist on posting this video (Bonus dance video after beating the game, no spoilers but freaking sexy)
Omg I think I lost some brain ceels.
They're idiots. I love them.
