Survival Horror is Dead
Is it dead? Discuss!
(I had some big argument here but alex fucked it up)

Clearly, you haven't played deadspace. Sure, the company (EA) is pretty much forcing people to accept it as a franchise before it's even become as well established as Resident Evil or Silent Hill by cramming graphic novels and straight-to-DVD anime movies based around the game, but nonetheless, it's a very good game. Seriously, name one other game where you're encouraged to brutally dismember your victims with a weapon specifically designed to do so, rather than simply shooting them.
Dead Space is awful. Brutally dismembering your victims is not survival horror. It may be fun ala Gears of War (you asked to name another game, so there's one). There are only two games that I've played that are survival horror, Condemned and Condemned 2. These days people think survival horror means a guy with a gun in a dimly lit corridor not knowing which end the monster is coming out of. While sure games like RE4 are hella fun (RE4 is one of the greatest games ever) it rarely has you jumping out of your skin. Their are hardly any surprise moments at all and when they are it's less than "OH MY GOD!!!" and more "There's no way that giant sculpture in the form of my enemy is going to come to life and chase me. Oh look, it just got activated". Dead Space, for anyone over 18 who's played it, is not scary. Sure their are some creepy parts, but it's not scary. Not once throughout the entire game did an enemy shock or frighten me. It was just, "If I go into that room there's going to be a quarentine lockdown and enemies will fall from the vents. Oh look at that, lights are going off and creatures are coming through the vents. I'd go ahead and chop their limbs off but I'm too busy getting interupted being reminded to do so by some prat whose messages always block my aim."
The point of survival horror games are to shock people out of their skins by having a realistic amount of health and damage that one could see themselves in this situation. Condemned: Criminal Origins did this magnificently, and so did Condemned 2 until you reach halfway through the game but it still manages to shock and disturb you in ways that you've never imagined. "Survival Horror" has become just another label big studios give to their next generic shooter to sell to a niche market, but we've gotten used to ignoring this because they always miss it by about ten and a half miles.
A man chooses. A slave obeys.
What the hell is this thread about?

It was about Survival Horror being dead but a hacker got into my account and changed this and another of my threads, the Left 4 Dead one.
Mirka and Kirk are looking into it.

This concerned me. I hope I don't ever come home to something like this again. While I'm drunk. Or if I happen to be sober.
I was worried about you, Justin.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
you do know you can edit the thread title back to what it was, right?
I cant edit it back, its evidence!

LOL!
Do it!
Kill your self, but tape it for us please!
Curse me out while you do it!
HAHAHAHAHA!
Oh, now that I know, I have had my account hacked. and I am not talking about the chat.
"Dairy of a madman" I never posted that duck/pig picture. I always thought it was Frank, he fucked with my book thread once. completly ruinning it. Damn beaner. you still reak of the fields!
Left 4 dead is awesome, its essentially a survival game, but not really horror, it isn't scary and even if zombies do scare you, YOU HAVE GUNS PEW PEW PEW.
Dead space wasn't horror either, any game can shock you and give you cheap scares, the whole dismembering thing was cool and all but it doesn't deserve a game of the year award for that.
I'm looking forward to Silent Hill 5 and RE5 : <
I agree with your opinion about the condemned 1 and 2, james, truly the only games that have managed to scare me are the silent hill series (up till 3) and Fatal Frame (1 and 2). If the game gives you too much guns and ammo or a fucking spacesuit so that nothing can kill you, its not really survival its just a shoot em' up.
why don't we share our solitude?

I put RE4 back on my computer over the weekend to ply it some more. Which sucks because I had deleted all of it before and now I don't have any of my weapons unlocked or anything, but oh well.
Anyways, Survivor Horror isn't dead. All the big companies are smoothing out the franchises they got to more action games because those sell better and it's all about the Big Mamoo! I think it's crazy that video games bring in more money a year than all movies combined. But it's not really crazy when you consider each game is 60 bucks and a movie ticket is only like 9 or 10. Maybe if they factor in the popcorn and Jujubes ... but i digress.
There will always be some little upstart company that wants to make a name for itself with a survival horror game for that specialized group of fans that are waiting. There may be a lot of little shitty games along the way, but eventually someone will stumble out with an amazing game. And it'll jump out of the shadows and grab the people!!!
