Region-Free DVD Player recommendations?
Does anyone on here have a region-free DVD player? I'm thinking of buying one, but I'm having trouble finding any reviews online, so I'm wondering if you guys recommend any. I've seen some expensive ones online, but apparently there are some cheap ones that are supposed to be good. By cheap, I mean under $100, which is less than what my DVD player cost when I bought it in 2000, and that was considered cheap at the time too.
If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!
I have one... I don't know how easy they are to come by in the US but most UK players are multi region as standard... if not they can be made multi region with codes entered on the remote... you can find the codes quiet easily on the web if you search for your players name + mulit region hacks/codes in google

Yeah I've read about those, not sure if there's one for mine, but I'll look into it. Thanks!
POST SCRIPT: Come to think of it, I'd still need something to convert PAL to NTSC, so I might just get a new player then. They're pretty easy to come by online, but finding reviews on them not written by customers isn't.

You sure about that? I was just looking up the AE 2-disc version of Zatoichi on co.uk, and it seemed willing to ship here. Might be the product you were looking at.
Maybe there's something here, I looked but I couldn't be arsed to search too long.

I couldn't find anything related to what I'm looking for. Thanks for the effort and link, though!

I know. I was just saying I don't think the site refuses to ship to the U.S. COMPLETELY.
Fuckhead, you arsed me into it, here, all under 100 bucks:
the cyberhome dvd-300 for $69.95 (plus P+P) [URL=http://www.lfvw.com/cyberhome300.html]>>[/URL]
And this is said about it: "The Cyberhome 300 does indeed convert pal to ntsc. It also looks like shit, on all discs, conversion or not. But honestly, at a less than $100 price point you're not going to find any players that really look that great, so you might as well settle with the Cyberhome. Another player to give a shot if you can still find one is the Phillips 727."
Others:
Toshiba 4900 or Philips 727

I arsed you into it? I don't know about that, but thanks again! Another one I'm trying to look into is this puppy:

Nah, it was more like I found what I was looking for in the first place.

My friend owns this player, it comes locked for region 1 but it can be easily "hacked" for multi region--just press few buttons on the remote in order. It does PAL-NTSC conversion. And if you ever do and download a movie it can play it on it's divx format.

This is the one I have, it's basically the same as DVP642 except it don't play divx files.

You da man.
I take it the video quality on both players is good. I wonder why the one with DivX capabilities is cheaper than the one without.
I can't say that from the personal experience, I don't have too fancy equipments, but I bought my player on recommendation from few of hometheater nutters who live for this stuff.
have you tried ebay? They have lots of them.
after you find one you like, just type the model # into google and you should find some reviews.

Hook a pc to the tv, and use it to play any region DVDs. that's what I do. You may need additional softwares.
I found a neat site that has some region-free players:
[URL=http://www.zonefreedvd.com/]http://www.zonefreedvd.com/[/URL]
Most aren't cheap, but if you understand the specs behind the players you'll know why they aren't cheap. Considering these players can play damn near any audio or video medium on disc, some of them seem like a bargain.

Sold out? The one he has, or the one his buddies have? I looked at the latter this morning and Amazon still had it.
Pshaw, check out Denon's $1300 one. Oh, to dream...

After doing some more research, I've decided to not buy a region-free DVD player, but instead build one of [URL=http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/htpc.htm]these[/URL]. It won't be quick or cheap to build, but I think the results will be worth it.
xbox is region free, after modding.
Here is the deal, nearly any DVD player is region free. all you have to do is enter a specific code. Look up DVD hack codes on Google, find the player that you have or a cheap one to buy and enter the code. Once done it will allow you to play in the region selected. i think you may have to enter the code each time you watch another film, but it's fucking free people.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.

It's really easy though, you Google the hack DVD codes and a bunch of sites come up with codes for various machines.
I did, I said Google Dvd Hacks? Didn't I?
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
Here, huge list of DVD makers, click on yours and it will show you if there is a hack and if there is the code:

I have a region free player and it's pretty good. I enjoy watching my copies of Ichi The Killer, Oldboy, and Kung Fu Hustle, but what I would like to know is whether or not there is a way to bypass the region lock on my computer's dvd-writer. When I insert an import DVD it tells me that it can play the disc, but that I would have to switch my region settings and I can only do that x amount of times before it's permanently stuck in the region that it's set to last (I think it has 4 switches before it locks up). Is there a way to bypass this limitation?
Meh.

Buffed up with US $100 in replacement parts, a $150 disc player can challenge players that cost ten times as much. But forget about your warranty...

Region-free as in they play DVDs from Europe and the US? I didn't know they had them.
