PSP (PlayStation Portable)
Wow, it's been a while since i posted..but anyways. I am ultra excited about the upcoming sony handheld. If you don't know what I am talking about then check out this link: All hail the Nintendo killer
I think PSP will be some serious contender for Nintendo. First since Saga Gear. I don't care for niether PSP or DS. They have their strong point and weak point.
PSP will deffinitely have better graphic, which it seems is the only requirement for good game, and it will deffinitely get you more friends in the school yard. It's has cool and useless movie play function. Who the hell wants to watch a stinkin movie on 2" screen anyway (especially FF: Advent Child). And it'll cost more, lot more. But it seems they already have 3rd party developers lined up.
DS has a long list of games already available. It is duel screened, which will get damaged. Have strong 1st party games. It will no doubtably have tons of ported games from their older system.
Zelda: Link to the Past is THE best adventure game ever...
A little bird told me that the psp is going to be under $200 US dollars.
Dual screen dosen't swing my vote. I'll take the PSP.
My brother got a DS for xmas, but I really do want a PSP. Who wants to buy me one?
Ok, I'll admit that nintendo has long dominated the video game scene, but since Sony came into the picture their fanbase has been decreasing. Nintendo, in my honest opinion, is aimed more at the younger crowd now and has been since the final days of the Nintendo 64. Plus Nintendo was almost bought out by microsoft (Former Nintendo President tells microsoft to suck his balls , but declined. Graphics for me is not a major requirement for a good game, I grew up playing atari and 8 bit nintendo. And I pre-ordered one from eb games and was told the price would be between $179.99 and $199.99. When it was released in Japan on december 12th the price was $185.00. I beleive that nintendo is on it's last leg and will soon go the same way sega did.
one more thing, the PSP sold over 200,000 units on the first day it was released in japan, by then end of January they expect to have sold over 1.5 million. think about it. Plus the psp has a large selection of games available at launch. They range from 1st party developers to third party developers.
I'd be very wary of buying first batch of PSP. I hear all sorts of problems like cartridge shooting out while game play and some LCD problems. I'm sure most of the problems will be fixed, but still...

One thing that differentiates Sega from Nintendo in the console race is that Sega had operated in the red for years dating back through the Genesis. Nintendo on the other hand had an 800 million dollar profit last year. While much of that was based on GBA sales it can't be neglected that their home console games still sell well amongst their fans (like me). If you compare console sales globally the XBOX and GC are almost at a tie. The difference is that with Nintendo's manufacturing costs they cut even on every system sold while both Sony and MS lose money, though that's not to say that either of them are hurting by any means.
And the kiddy image that Nintendo recieves nowadays has come about for a couple of reasons. First off, the biggest franchises, such as Resident Evil and Final Fantasy, which are commonly considered to be more mature than say Mario, were not easy to develop for on the N64. This caused the Playstation to grab a good hold on the casual gamers and those who felt that Mario and company were in some way immature games. Unfortunately, Nintendo neglected to realize a number of things along the way. Namely that CDs would overtake cartridges (on a sidenote it was a close deal that almost got Sony and Nintendo in bed with each other and would have resulted in a Nintendo PLaystation but Nintendo pissed Sony off and then got its marketshare usurped as a result) but also in their marketing and failure to notice changes in consumer trends. By promoting games like Pokemon and changing Zelda to cel-shaded graphics their reputation has taken a huge, and largely undeserved, hit.
As for the PSP or DS, I'm not getting either until more games are released but as it stands I will almost defintiely get a DS as I like what I see coming down the pipe while the PSP doesn't do a damn thing for me. Still, for the more casual gamer who doesn't get into the same games, it might be something to consider.
And it will be under $200. Sony is making a large effort to combat Nintendo. I think for this reason that by the end of the year a DS might only cost 80 dollars or so. Odddly enough, the game developers are seemingly siding with Nintendo here. More games are in development for the DS and more big name titles are among those. Keep in mind that Nintendo has destroyed handhelds rangin from the Sega Nomad and GameGear to the WOnderswan to the NeoGeo Pocket Color without breaking a sweat, even though all those systems were technically more capable than the GameBoy. I think Nintendo might have some trouble early on but my money is on them.
well we will definitely see within the next six months whether or not the psp will take off....but I'm on sony's side this time...i wasn't impressed with the DS, sorry. here is a link to a list of psp games set to come out (keep in mind some of these are japan only

A portable Playstation 2 for me to carry around and play on a 2 hour charge for video games...yeah this is a complete waste of money especially since a large majority of games on the PS2 suck major ass and only a few select cut to grade for playing. So what is going to make games on this handheld system any different? I do see it. The MGS Acid game doesn't look so great once I had seem some in game footage of it. It is mixing RPG elements into it and doesn't even look like Stealth action at all anymore in that. The added features to the PSP with a UMD video player for movies doesn't excite me enough and a mp3 player as well....blah. Thats what Palm Pilots and IPODs and MP3 Players are for.
The thing is, this will be marketed to and sold to the casual gamer who will probably eat it up. Those of us who have played games since the NES days or before (I'm only 18 and got my NES when I was 3 so the early 80s and late 70s stuff can't totally apply to me) look more for innovation in games and seek out new things. Nintendo really caters to this audience. That's why with the DS they are moving in a strange direction. To be fair, though, the DS has a number of traditional games coming out for it. No matter what Nintendo may state it is simple to realize that the DS is gonna replace the GBA.
The PSP on the other hand goes for people that have become gamers with the advent of the PS/PS2 and XBOX. They are a larger market that pursues mainly racing, fighting, and shooting games. These are the people that have launched Halo, GTA, and Burnout into huge franchises that while good games add nothing to the industry aside from money to be used in developing new ideas. Granted these are the people that have helped Final Fantasy and Metal Gear reach new audiences so I can fault them only to a point. The thing I hold against them is the hatred of Nintendo as a kiddy company (though I maintain Nintendo has also fostered this image while denying it).
I still put my money on the DS but I also see no reason why they won't both survive. They cater to different audiences just like the consoles do. Sega was an exception in that their audience and Nintendo's overlapped but they didn't have the franchises to hold them like Nintendo did. I think they will both exist and we the consumer will be better off because of it.
And the reason I stated in my previous post that the DS has more developers is that aside from Metal Gear and a few racing games the PSP is missing some things. The DS has RPGs with a new Xenosaga, Baten Kaitos and a remake of Final Fantasy III which was never released in the US (the FF3 we got was really the 6th one). They have the franchises like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. And they have the support of Sega and Capcom moreso than the PSP.
I was just in EBGames yesterday and the guy offered me the reserve on PSP but like I told him, neither one has impressed me yet. Still, I'll probably get a DS when more games are released because I know the games and want them, they just aren't out yet. The PSP has got to get some damn good games on it for me to buy it, though.
Big name franchises on both systems that could move units -
PSP - Burnout
Devil May Cry
Gran Turismo 4
Metal Gear Acid (the reviews so far from Japan are pretty good actually)
Ridge Racers
Tony Hawk's Underground
Twisted Metal: Head-On
Viewtiful Joe
Spiderman 2
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (only a movie but that is a selling point to the PSP)
assorted sports titles like Tiger Woods and ones from EA Games
DS - Advance Wars
Animal Crossing
Castlevania
Final Fantasy III
Mario Kart
Metroid Prime: Hunters
Pokemon Dash
Pokemon (huge selling point for the system that could probably solely support it)
Ridge Racer
Sonic the Hedgehog
Spiderman 2
Super Mario 64
A new Super Mario Bros. (first new one since Yoshi's Island in 1995)
Urbz: Sims in the City
Warioware Touched
Yoshi's Touch and Go!
A new Kirby game
Xenosaga
Baten Kaitos
A Princess Peach platformer
Need For Speed Underground 2
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Mega Man Battle Network
Final Fantasy III
So, I guess this means it won't be released for playstation. Shame...
I don't hate nintendo...i have an sp...i just think that nintendo is headed in the direction of childrens games. battery life is more than two hours by the way. by the way...what the hell is a gizmondo? Look it up on google...
they both have shitty games, cost too much, and the PSP battery life sucks as of right now.
I used to have a GBA- but why take a portable game when you have better ones at a home console?
A good book is always better then some handheld.

I understand what you're saying but to me a kiddy game is like something based in the realm of Disney or Power Rangers, a game that is directly marketed to kids and has simple enough gameplay for them to pick up. Nintendo's franchises in most cases I wouldn't deem as kiddy. Pikmin may have a cartoon look to it but is deeply engaging and fun. Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are deep story-based tactical RPGs. Metroid is a great sci-fi adventure game and Zelda, regardless of its previous cel-shading or the next installment's more realistic looks, remains the best and most consistent series I've ever played. Like I said earlier, though, whiel these games are more than they seem to be Nintendo has done nothing to take away this image. If anything they've fostered it.
And I hate all this debate on PSP battery life. Even if it's only two hours, so fucking what. Like the DS and GBA it has an internal battery that you plug into to charge up. How much of this portable game are you playing that is away from a wall socket? The only two areas I can think of are a car or plane. If you're old enough to worry about it you can drive yourself and don't need to play something in a car and if you're on a plane or car just read a book when the batteries dry up.
the point with the PSP battery life is that it doesn't compete with the DS or GBA SP dickhead. not to mention you're supposed to be able to watch movies on it. how are you gonna watch a movie and play games afterwards? oh shit i guess you can't. not only that but NA is getting a way cheaper screen on the PSP. although i hear that nippon ichi is making a game for the PSP, and a Y's game is coming out for it, and a wipeout game.
still, tales of phantasia is coming out for the gba so i'll just wait for that.
Do kids just sit at stores and scratch the shit out of the DS that's displayed? I swear it looks like a tiger has been playing it.
Duel screen is really stupid. I vote PSP (even though I wouldn't buy either).

Here's the deal...as it was stated earlier in this thread, how many times are you going to find yourself playing the psp without being a few feet from a wall socket (that's what the ac adapter is for). I understand it doesn't compete, but how can you expect it to compete battery wise when it's games are much more detailed and advanced. Unlike the DS and GBA SP, you can buy extra batteries for it...and yes where i work it looks as if a tiger has played with our display model...damn kids...

Exactly, I can't think of any time since I've gotten my GBA SP that I haven't been able to plug it right in and keep playing. I can't see how the PSP would be any different.
The movie thing on the PSP bugs me in that who is really going to use it? If it catches on so be it, but as far as I can tell most people would much rather have the movie on their TV. The only one I've heard announced for the system is Final Fantasy: Advent Children, but that is getting the good-old DVD treatment as well.
And those kids in stores that play the sample games are evil little fuckers. They try to do whatever they can to mess up the displays and systems and even if they hate the thing they will spend hours playing them while their parents just shop away.

Easy. You just carry a backpack full of rechargeable batteries. Duh.

PSP will be a huge good thing for portable gaming.
PSP will be a huge good thing for portable gaming.
Could you explain how?
If you mean that it will expand portable gaming then no. The GBA has sold over 120 million units worldwide. It's an established type of gaming.
If you mean it will bring better graphics to portable games then yes. Only problem there is that I know of noone that goes for a portable for the graphics. They make home consoles for that.
If you mean it will bring more innovative games, no. If anything it's more of the same old stuff. At least the DS is trying something new even if me and many others think its a bit gimmicky.
And if you mean it will help bring new features to handhelds then technically yes but so what? It plays MP3s and some movies. Big deal. You can buy a CD player and a DVD player at a lesser cost than a brand new PSP. Here the DS has a chat function included that could be interesting but still who cares about it?

nintendo has long dominated the gaming consoles....
the ds is cheaper and nintendo re-released some of the old school games, something ps cant say for themselves having only been around since '94. plus the psp is expensive, more expensive than the ds, and its geared more-so towards hardcore gamers.....which I think, if youre that hardcore, you play the game on pc. not psp.
i have the ds for all the games nintendo 8-bit came up with and everything post. nostalgic reasons and because i have the advance system with a ton of games.
if you want to play ps2 games, you play it on the ps2.
to me, it hasnt much to offer except the additional features like listening to music and watching movies. but condsidering the battery time sucks (2 hours for movies) AND the UMD tech, youre gonna have to go out and buy movies you probably already had and music you already have......you might as well just have a portable dvd player or an mp3 player. and the controls on teh psp looked cramped. and the wieghyt of the thing compared to ds is more.
buuuuut, each have a performance that is comparable.
yet the ds is compatible with bluetooth enabled phones and pdas...very nice.
and the old gameboys had camera and printer attachment 'expansions'.....they could make them again, even better, more marvelous. and it has dual screens. its a multifunctional device. nintendo also takes many risks when coming out with new products for their games, which means more options, unusual and magnificent... and means they have the most versitile gaming console market there is. its already obvious.
the psp has abilites too, but if thats all umd (which'll becostly for consumers) its gonna struggle, especially since the psp costs three times as much as the ds. people are going to go for the ds. not only because of price, but because of the name. the one we trust and have been enthralled with since '75 coin-op's and in-home systems, n.e.s. and r.o.b.
i love nintendo.
sony ps only makes it because they have strong financial background, but nintendo has the best game designers and Customer background.
Ok, I'm done.
ok, im not...
Nintendo always wins.
ok, now im done. haha!
