Which do you prefer? PS3 or XBOX? And why? Don't be like people in my school who will say PS3 sucks and give no reason. Which is better?

I have a PS3 and I believe it to be better only because of the more capabilities that it has over the XBOX. Between the blu-ray and the free wi-fi. Plus free PSN. And I just prefer the exclusives; L4D and Gears of War are pretty sweet though. I am not saying XBOX sucks but I think PS3 is better.

What are your thoughts?

I like my xbox better. I've found that most of the games I like (or would like) to play are on xbox and if their counterparts ARE on ps3, I prefer the xbox's gameplay over playstation's. So... yep. Xbox.

Fair enough. Thanks for giving a reason. I can't stand it when people come up to me and say how Xbox is so much better yet when I ask how so they have no reason. Or if they have a reason it is usually false.

I agree. Being a console-whore just because makes no sense to me.

I love modern warfare 2 but hate playing it on the playstation. There are a million different reasons why, but I can't really explain it without sounding like an asshole since I don't know any of the technical aspects like a lot of guys on here do. I just like playing.

PS3. I always had playstations, and I never used XBOX. End of story.

I have both. I nearly never play my PS3.

If a game is cross-platform I always get it on 360, especially multiplayer games because there are so many more people to play with. My Xbox friends list has like 60 people on it, I'd be shocked if I have 8 on PSN.

I HATE the Playstation controller. If I were a Japanese woman, it would probably be great, but I'm a 6'2 American male.

I have to pay for XBL, but honestly it's so cheap and so much better than the free PSN, I really have no issue paying for it. I'm never opposed to paying for something that is the better option.

The 360 exclusives are much more appealing to me. Oh and Mass Effect.

The PS3 has a few extra features, but IMO they are pretty valueless to most people. The bulk of people don't have 1080p TV's, so Blu-Ray is really kind of moot, not to mention that as a movie lover, Blu-Ray is really not that big of an upgrade. It's great for stuff like Iron Man, but most movies don't benefit from it. It's nice that wireless is included with PS3, but really, if you're using wireless you're limiting your system. Especially when it comes to streaming HD video or playing online games. Plus, it is technically a benefit that the 360's wireless is external, because you can now get a wireless N adaptor instead of just G.

Minor issue, but the menu/dashboard on the 360 is so much better designed. I get what Sony was trying to do by having all the menus on their CE devices be the same, but it's irritating and difficult to understand.

Oh the person who works at Sony and decided to make the remote control blue tooth, needs to have their head caved in with a brick. Worst design decision for a home-entertainment device ever.

Kirk- I have cousins who work at Microsoft's headquarters in Seattle, and they've got Project Natal. They say it's the most amazing gadget they've ever used, and that it's really going to blow us all away. I can't wait.

I'm interested in Natal, from a technical standpoint, but not from a gameplay angle. At least not based on what I've seen. I'm old school, I really have no desire to jump around when I play a game. IMO, it adds nothing to the type of games I like to play.

It's cute for a while on the Wii, but all that shit does is turn your games into a toy.

I've always been more interested in gaming as an artistic medium.

Thats exactly what I thought too, like with eyetoy, which was crap. I mean, my favorite games are fallout3 and oblivion, which are all about creativity. However, I do plan on trying out Natal.

The ps3 looks good. The 360 does not. Games look sexier with Ps3 than 360. There are more games and users for 360, and it's cheaper. I want them both. The controllers for PS3 is better than 360. MGS-series is "exclusive" to PS3... PS3 has a Linux-os... which is way cooler than having a console with WIndows...

That's arguable. My MW2 360 looks way cooler than my 80GB PS3. I hate the curved top of the PS3. But that's an aesthetic preference, so it's moot.

Games look sexier with Ps3 than 360

Also arguable. On PS3 exclusives, perhaps you're right. But more often than not, games that are cross platform look better on 360. And that is a fact. Actually, I have never seen a cross-platform game that looked better on PS3. Thankfully for PS3 users, this is finally becoming less frequent.

MGS-series is "exclusive" to PS3

Obviously you haven't heard about the next game in the series, MGS: Rising. Which is going to be cross-platform.

PS3 has a Linux-os... which is way cooler than having a console with WIndows...

Outside of the simple fact that you're wrong, because the 360 does not actually run windows, I don't see how the OS that is behind the scenes makes any difference. It was kinda neat that you could run Linux on the PS3, but ever since they changed them up to the PS3 slim, Sony removed that functionality.

I've had a PS3 for about a year and a half now, love it dearly.

I use it to serve all the media content to my front from from either my laptop or the server in my office using ps3mediaserver (AWESOME app). I use it as a DVR for pausing, recording, rewinding live TV. A bit of internet browsing, and obviously playing games (Although Street Fighter 4 sees the vast majority of screen time). Blu-Ray is just the cherry on the cake.

Quote:

I can't agree with that. Blu-ray is a massive upgrade for watching movies if you've got a system that's capable of supporting it. Maybe on a 720p screen you won't get all the benefit, but at 1080p it makes a massive difference in the quality of an image. A good audio system makes a big difference too. The PS3's DVD upscaling is pretty decent, and I see a noticeable difference in quality between the PS3 and my old DVD player.

Saying that, most people I know have a 360.

As an all-round entertainment device, the PS3 rocks my world. But for games, I've decided to pick up a 360 in January.

The multiplayer elements of Live seem *far* superior to the PSN, and the GTA exclusives are annoying as a PS3 owner, because they look awesome and I can't have them. Natal looks interesting too - I'm keen to see how far they take it *outside* of the gaming environment and into the main xBox menu.

So my advice, if you're looking for a media centre and games machine, get the PS3. If you're after a game machine and media centre, go for the xBox. Better yet, get both if you can.

Oh I agree that if you have the system to support 1080p it is a big upgrade. But most people don't have it. In fact, if you saw the amount of people playing a PS3 on an old SD-TV, you would be saddened.

Or worse yet, using a PS3 on a 1080p TV with a scart cable. When my neighbour showed me his 'sweet' setup, I just gave him an HDMI cable. I couldn't deal with that. He had no idea.

Unfortunately not anymore. At e3 Hideo Kojima (I think his name is) stated, at the microsoft press conference, that MGS would be coming to the Microsoft platforms, but it will not remain Solid Snake (the protagonist of the PS MGS). I am not a fan of the MGS games but I find that it annoying that one of the few "exclusives" Sony had is now becoming a multi-platform game. When will we get Halo or Gears of War? Or Left 4 Dead?

Sony won't get Halo because MS owns the rights to the series.

Gears of War will remain on Xbox, because I believe MS has a nice contract with Epic that funnels a nice chunk of cash back to them for tech development.

And if you believe what Gabe of Valve says, you have a long time to wait for L4D simply because they find the PS3 is too complicated to program for, and the cost of them becoming PS3 devs is prohibitive. Of course Valve is traditionally a PC developer, so porting to the 360 is easy for them thanks to DirectX.

Sony only has 2 titles slated for the next year that I have interest in. The Last Guardian, from the Ico team. And God of War 3, but Dante's Inferno is looking like it might be good enough that I really won't need God of War for a beat-em-up fix.

When i bought my PS3 i had the initial "Wow the 360 sucks!" Phase because then Unreal Tournament 3 was a PS3 exclusive, and you could download mods.

but after a while i bought some cross platform games (like COD WaW), and it just didn't compare to the amount of people on Xbox Live, and the features it has.

So little by little the "superior" console got less and less play time. I actually spent more time this year downloading updates whenever i turned on the PS3 to watch movies, than actual playing.

Decided to give it another shot with Uncharted 2, but the MP is a flaming piece of s***.

Plus no one has a mic.

So is back to being a Blu-ray player. The only thing that's good for example if my kid wants to play Little Big Planet, he can do so on his account for free. Not like XBL which i have to buy an account and he won't use any of the features i use.

However this is all if you do care about online play. If you are a casual gamer, then having a Blu-ray player and internet access might be the way to go.

Both the PS3 and the 360, i had to sent for repairs last year, so i wouldn't claim any of the two to be flawless as functionality goes.

Either choice i think it beats having to buy a computer every year or so to play high quality games.

I also have to add that it sucks to have to install stuff for some games in the PS3, and that the updates are a lot slower than xbox live. It doesn't completely break the decision of getting one or the other.

but if i have a multiplatform game i tend to get it on the 360 just so that i don't have to install crap, or take an hour or two downloading/installing an update.

It doesnt take an hour to update. I have a ps3 and the longest that I have done was 5 minuts. I have 13 games and none of them have had an update longer than 10 minutes.

Still. They don't take that long. I updated to 3.15 yesturday and it was done in 10 minutes. People are acting like you update your PS3 everyday week. It isn't that bad to take 10 minutes out of playing games or watching movies to update. You can even set it up to turn off automatically when it is done downloading and installing.

I don't really know shit about games anymore. I always liked the PS2 over X-box because they had so many more games. It seemed like the only thing I ever saw for x box back then was like a madden game or halo and that was it. (exaggeration of course) Plus the x box controller was/is so damn bulky. Might as well be playing with your shoe!

I don't own either of the new ones right now, it seems with 360 coming out before PS3 though that they've switched and all the games are on that one now.
However I am going to get a PS3 probably the day after Christmas. I like the wireless controllers, that it's got the blu-ray and the free Network thing. I don't see myself using the network that much because the games that I like don't really lend themselves to it i don't think. (Silent Hill, Metal Gear, God of War) And I absolutely despise first person shooters. Pretty as hell, but they just look awful to me to play.

I just like those over-the-shoulder views for games for whatever reason. Looking forward to trying Assassin's Creed and some of these other ones that I've seen.

Oh yeah, almost forgot the worst of the worst. Games that the only objective to them is just to play them. Where all you do is level up and up to see how high you can get.
I like games that have an ending! Better still is if they have a beginning, middle and ending like an actual book or movie.

So I guess it just comes down to it depends on what kind of games you like as to which one to get. Like if you're 10 years old or a retiree then you'd probably go for the Wii.

If you like over-the-shoulder, or "3rd person" games, you're missing out on the best of them if you don't get an xbox... Mass Effect. I'm so excited about the sequel which comes out in January. They have dome something brilliant, where it reads your gamesave from the first game, so choices you made in the first game will effect the 2nd game. For instance, if you let a character die in the first game, they won't appear in the new game. Where if they lived in you friend's game, they will. Should make each person's play through unique.

to make some research before I do get this thing. How do you hook it up to the internet anyways? Just plug it into your phone line somewhere?
I've got my internet through the cable company so would I plug it into that instead? Does it come with some kind of instruction sheet I hope.

I was thinking about this earlier and I wonder if there's some deep-seated subconcious thing going on with everyone having an involuntary hatred towards the PS3 simply because they used the same font from Spiderman 3?
I think I'm going to fill out some forms and get a couple million from the government to conduct some research.

Well, with the launch of the PS3 Slim, they are no longer using the Spider-Man font. And though I have joked a lot about it with my typography-nerd friends, I don't think that has anything to do with it.

It's more about Sony's consistent arrogance that everyone would just lap up the PS3 because the PS2 was so successful. Oddly enough, in this instance, it feels like the pulled a "Microsoft" and just didn't believe anyone would be interested in something other than their stuff.

Oh and as a minor note: PS3 people, be prepared to begin paying for online stuff too. The brass at Sony keep dropping hints that they need to make money off of PSN. My guess, they are bringing this stuff up now so no one freaks out when they tell you there will be a monthly charge to play MAG and FF14. This is the second quote I"ve seen in less than a month on the issue.

During an interview with Nikkei Japan, Sony's CTO Masayuki Chatani touches on the growing number of ways the PlayStation 3 has to accept payment, including the dreaded "monthly fees....

Servers and the like have running costs, and we would face difficulties if our business depended solely on the sell-and-forget model. After we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services. We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like. We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways. In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too.

If you play it daily it doesn't. If you are like me who plays it every once in a full moon or worst, it does.

Besides it's minutes in the PS3 for regular game updates on the PS3 vs. seconds to regular game updates on the 360.

Now if you are like me who doesn't connect to a game in a long time, for example Kill Zone 2, wich was what 200mb or so in an *update*. That's a freaking size of a map pack almost.

and that's without mentioning Call Of Duty WAW, which had me install several updates in order to play it.

I use PS3 but I'm kind of biased in this regard b/c I refuse to use any Microsoft products (they're the freakin' Standard Oil of the tech industry). But still, the 100% defective rate of first generation 360's was completely unacceptable. I worked at a video game store when it came out and I had some customers who when through like 5-10 360s. I think most of those problems are cleared up, but I won't give my money to a company that intentionally releases a faulty product just so they can release it before the competition (this is why I didn't like the PS2, poor GameCube Sad ). Sony lost a lot of developers/marketshare by delaying the PS3, but I think it was the right decision.

I don't even play video games anymore though, so my PS3 just collects dust. Occasionally I download a movie on it or play NCAA Football, but shooter games bore the shit out of me. I played too much Doom/Duke Nukem as a kid. I really like Metal Gear Solid. That's what video games should be—engaging with a deep storyline. Hokey shit like Halo, Gears of War, and Killzone just seem like a waste of time.
