She has the menu on her site like that too. I went through a couple of iterations of that but came up blank.
Ahhh...so it's probably just "her thing"

It seems very odd that her name specifically would appear on that picture and her not know anything about it

the only numbers significant to me are 4,8,1, and 0
which are also the first 4 numbers.
the rest might mean nothing?

i fucked around with unicodes for a while, did it for about 30 minutes and got nothing but hula hoops.

Kristen has essentially been ruled out. i don't think there is much to be had with her site at this point, and she is categircally not a part of the game by several of her own admissions.

Well, the repeating is intriguing but I don't know what to do with it. i'll post it on Team Xbox and see if anyone there makes anything of it.

I couldn't get back in to "our colony" for some reason, so I signed up using IE (rather than FF, not that it makes a real difference) and it seems to have included me as an additional player (and 10 bonus points).

Woo hoo....up to 80 points now! Just the 30000 left and we'll be performing a daring cult smash n grab.

Incidentally, is anyone else finding that when they go the the our colony page and type in their username and password that the screen is freezing up for ages and then not logging in?

I have to say that this doesn't fill me with confidence for the rest of the game. In fact it seems like a glaring example of stupidity from the makers...

They must have known that putting her url on the pic was going to lead to such chaos.

Oh well, a glitch perhaps.....

Keep looking.

That 117-page thread on the xbox forums is hilarious....

Seemingly every random angle mentioned - (are the toys attacking each other? Could it be something to do with where the inverted photoshop of the grinch is looking? Can we think of lobster as lob"star" for the purposes of our star theme?)

I have to admit frustration, but I'm intrigued.

Any other ideas?

I've been trawling through the etoys site and the online scrabble. Nothing obvious whatsoever.

I'd better get some non-colony work done...

Parka - you know the phrase "Truth brings Revelation" - was that the same slogan for the previous puzzles, or is this something specific to the current challenge? As in:

"Pass along to those you want to join you in your journey. think about who can help you take it all the way and bring them in

truth brings revelation"

Oh well, they found it anyway. Some kind of invitation which overlaid the wordsearch to spell out "Call Yourself"

YOURSELF, of course, was typed out on the phone keypad to make up a number and the guy at the other end asked them to put in something about science.

I'm thinking this is a bloody nightmare to crack! It also sounds like you need a decent knowledge of e3, Bungie etc

Good luck with the computer, I'm fairly done on Colony!

I'm not sure exactly how they got the invitation though, because without that the crossword was meaningless.

I think there was one clue that at lot of people cottoned on to: The 3 "e"s on around the fifth row. That's the clue for e3, which in turn could have led you to the invite.

I'm up for having a crack at the next challenge too, but seriously - it's bloody frustrating!

There was 200 pages of head-banging puzzlement over on that xbox site, with no real headway until someone, through sheer luck noticed that an invite they had been sent from ages ago looked similar to the wordsearch.

In all honesty - I don't know that I would ever have got there. The entire rest of the picture (including the bogus web address, obey giant, all of the cuddly toys, the baseball) was pretty much a selection of red herrings.

Oh well...

its remarkably fun! the next level of gaming.

reminds me, like someone had said, sparq-i? like the game. (the movie) and sort of like mulholland, but not am-im-on-acid-?-scary.

they should add some creepiness to it.

i posted out some of the colony logos around the city at work while on a walk (almost like a run) since my breaks are 7 minutes.

A few months ago I saw an ad in The Guardian jobs section (Brit paper, as I'm sure you know). It was completely in code, apart from a couple of words, making it possible (after about three hours) to decipher the hidden message. No explanations were given.

The advert said something along the lines of:
"Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the curtain? Have you ever wanted to pull the strings, be the puppetmaster, control the game? Well now you can. www.projectsyzygy.com"

It was a lot more mysterious than that, but that's all it said. Logging on to the site is asked for web developers, writers, graphic artists - anybody creative with a rebellious, anarchic spirit and a love of multi-layered puzzles.

I found out later that this company is actually trying to market and sell something as close to THE GAME as you can get realistically. It's almost ready to be fully unveiled.

I like this colony thing, but to be honest it doesn't seem as interactive or as engrossing as I'd like (maybe being in Britain and not seeing any of the colony stickers takes some of the thrill away). It doesn't appear to have a plot or characters, and ultimately it is just an elaborate marketing tactic for xbox 360.

I am, however, massively keen to see what happens with some of these games in the near future, I've heard there's quite a few ready to kick off, to ridiculous levels of complexity and involvement.

As long as I don't wake up to find all my credit cards frozen and a dead body on my lawn, I'm up for giving it a try!

By the way - 7 minute breaks???!!!!

That's some draconian levels of precision for break allocation - do you work at a clockmakers?

im curious about this riddle, you know anymore about the syzygy?

haha, 7 minutes. its bogus. i hardly notice the breaks throughout the day and when i do theyre already over or i have 2 minutes left of it. reason is because i have to be working at specific times, they chain me to my desk and let them free when breaktime comes up but if im in the middle of something and i cant leave at exactly sharp....then im screwed and dont get a break.

did you enter your email for the contact? im curious but leary.

bottom left
10(3) +10(3) = 2000 (right? i suck matches)

bottom middle
The White Hart
(haha) i called to one overseas and to a place in connecticut and asked about our colony and was transferred so many times. people seemed to find it humourous, but no one knew what the hell i was talking about. i even got them to ask people sitting in the taverns and look up guests, anything to do with our colony. They asked a group in a tavern, and I heard several people say no and wanted to know what our colony is. (im ridiculous) i thanked them and they all said good luck. Pretty Cool!

far right
4+3 = 7 but i dont know what it is on, an old mobo perhaps. but not sure

So, I've just got up and I'm about to check progress on that (monster) main thread...

Apparently the coordinates lead to Nevada, specifically - AREA 51.

I think we can assume that's not a coincidence.

Since last night the colony page has changed to say:

"Colonies work together" from "If you're chatting with me, you're not chatting with me"

When the ad was released the url led to a page asking for graphic artists/web developers etc.

It had 10 questions you had to answer or give responses to (have you heard of such and such...old ARG formats, online games, what are your skills etc. It was basically a screening process. As my skills are in writing, and I'm not too immersed in the games world, I hadn't heard of many of the things. There were some cool theorums in there that I can't quite remember, but I'll see if I saved in on my harddrive)

I put my email in a couple of days back. Nothing yet - but it flashed up saying "Patience is genius"...so we'll see.

At the time there was an article in the Guardian talking about a company looking to replicate the thrill of THE GAME. I'm convinced it relates to syzygy.

Will be interesting to see what they send through....

I'll keep you posted

Snuffy, Minuet....

It has been solved. And because I happened to be online shortly after the bugger was sorted I managed to get the answer in too and get us ten challenge points!

Huzzah!

Anyway, check this out. It is hilariously convoluted, but pretty clever. An infuriating puzzle:
Current challenge - SOLVED (Answer: "Round circle")

I am in 6 places where you talk.

Posted at 2:25 GMT

The answer was "Round Circle".

These are words four and three (4 + 3) of line (Area) 51 of the Poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (monogram sCt).

Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Step by step

1) Picture one gave us the info about lines "4 +3"

2) Picture 2 told us that 10^3 + 10^3 give K + K gives Kubla Khan

3) Picture 3 shows us poppies; Coleridge was addicted to opium.

4) Picture 4 gave us the coordinates to Area 51 (line 51 of the poem referred to)

5) Picture 5 gave us the monogram sCt for Samuel Taylor Coleridge

6) Picture 6 givesus the word "Beware" from the poem ("Beware, beware, his flashing eyes, etc")

7) The clue "It was a muse" - tells us about the Abyssinian Maid in Kubla Khan poem.

8) The clue "A sinful garden" - tells us about the sinful garden of Xanadu.

9) The answer was words 3 and 4 of line 51 of the poem Kubla Khan by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Holy shit. How in the name of crap people actually got to that solution is beyond me. Let's just say that the "challenge" thread eneded up being nearly 300 pages long. True teamwork I guess.

Anyway, thought you guys would like to know....

Laters

You know, apart from one key detail - getting the Area 51 coordinates - pretty much all of the initial 200 pages of theories and ideas were for nought.

The puzzles only really make sense when the Gamem8ker releases another clue, found on our ourcolony team page.

This time, the clue changed from "I am where you talk" to "It was a muse" and finally to "a vision ... a sinful garden"

So, basically - I don't see how anyone could have got to the poem conclusion until those last two details were released. That's two full days into the challenge!

It would have taken a superhuman leap of lateral thinking to find Coleridge from only the pics! I think if I get sucked into the next challenge I'm gonna hang back and let it brew for a while before racking my brain for possibilities.

Also - one last thing - each puzzle so far has had a subtle difference in the method used to solve it and where the answer is located (previously you've had to phone numbers found and map templates onto wordsearches etc)

It's interesting how they put this together - but the next one may have no similarity at all to what went before.

I can pretty much guarantee that it's gonna be frickin hard though!

Yeh - I've sort of been keeping half an eye on this, but not bothering to try and get into the challenges. Those pics came with the last couple of solutions - I've managed to get us 60 points from six different challenges, but to be honest - I think the prize is something crappy like a sneak preview of the xbox 360 of something. Wow.
Either way, I'm out of the loop - but checking to see what the result is.

I'm going to go see if they have a new challenge up.

Yeah, but you have to wait till noon it looks likie, the web cam at Navy Pier isn't back up yet.

In other news, this ARG seems much cooler and it has a story, you get shit in your physical mail and phone calls.

Start here, it's called Perplex City:http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9386

There is a link to register somewhere, but I seem to have misplaced it. I'm sure the UnForums have it.

It's the projectsyzygy game that I mentioned earlier in the thread. I put my email in a while back, but have yet to hear anything back. It said to "be patient"

If you go to the Unforums, under Perplex City they have a whole bunch os stuff. Right now thery seem to think there is a puzzle in the Sentinel "Futures" column.

Also, people have gotten cards in the mail after answering an email riddle. The cards seem to be linked as they are numbered individually. The message that they think it spells out is a list of 9 locations where you can eventually "buy" more cards, but I don't know if that's in virtual dollars or real or what.

I think it's "real" dollars. This is a canny way to make a bit of cash with a decent ARG. If it's good and involving, I'm sure people won't mind paying. the reward, therefore, would be real cash too. Incentive.

I just put my email in again, and nothing has arrivedin my inbox. I'm having a look at the Perplex city Academy at the mo, but nothing doing.

Did you just type your mail in and get details in the inbox? Or did you have to go through a different process....

There was a whole form to fill out. Asking for who you were, your address, etc.

Here is the letter I got:

Dear friends,

The people of Perplex City are grateful beyond measure for your patience over
recent months. Our cube retrieval project is now approaching its final phase
and thus I offer you, those who have kept loyalty with us, an early view of
things to come. Some of you may have heard rumours of this development in the
Sentinel newspaper (www.perplexcitysentinel.com) already but the full details
have not been revealed.

In a short while MC, on Earth, will be sending out parcels to thank you for
your patience. My daughter Scarlett (www.thescarlettkite.com) tells me that
you have shown deep interest in us and asked many penetrating questions; I
hope that these small tokens will go some way to slaking your curiosity. Our
Earth resources are sadly limited, so only 333 of these packs can be made
available. As you must already know, we place the highest value upon the
solving of puzzles -- thus, I have prepared a simple riddle. The first
333 people from Earth who correctly solve it will receive the parcel.

I wish you all swift wits and simple solutions.

Sente.

My first's simply a vegetable, delicious, round and green.
My third and fourth are sound asleep, as plainly can be seen.
My fifth is fifty, clear enough for any riddle-setter.
Two of my second on their sides will give my final letter.
Now that my second has my parts, fit them together well
You see me now before your eyes, it's plain for all to tell.

To enter your solution, visit http://www.perplexcity.com/email/ - you will
need your unique code and email addresss as well.

So - I've seen the prize, and it's bollocks Smile

As predicted, it's an xbox 360 ad. It features some of the colony names in the credit sequence.

Cheesy as all hell.

On another note, I was watching this prog late last night on BBC2 and who should pop up - but the makers of perplex city.

They insisted they not be called Gamemakers etc, but Earthly Representatives of Perplex whatevers.

They were, in fact, two geeky English guys who spoke with a lot of passion about how the hell this all got started. It looks kinda cool actually, but it seems you'd have to invest a lot of time and money to get most out of it. Those cards are the key to their revenue - they're hoping to get those sold right across the world.

Anyway....just thought you might like to know
