Netbook Recommendations?
So, Mom has decided she absolutely needs to flood my inbox with dire, allcap warnings of Obama's Secret Muslim Plans For World Domination while she's on the go. Naturally, I am picking up the tab. She spawned me; it's the least I can do.
Does anyone have any experience with any of the more inexpensive netbooks available now? I'll be doing my own poking around, but I would like personal insights from actual users if I could.

Thanks, Moons. I hadn't seen this one yet.

an 8.9 inch screen seems awfully tiny.
It really isn't, in fact it is quite practical...nowdays, I can't look at a laptop without thinking about how huge and cumbersome they are...
sounds like an original Gameboy with a qwerty keyboard.
Sometime tomorrow I will make a video to show you, they really are super cool!!
I just bought an Acer Aspire 10.1 Inch, you can pick one up for about $300. I like it so far. Windows, 1.6ghz atom, 160gb hd, 1gb ram. Webcam built in. I have the small battery but i still get a little over 3 hours on a charge.

To those of you that have/have used these for a while,I have a few questions:
Running basic apps like Microsoft Word: is it cumbersome on here, or fairly fast?
Do you think it would be powerful enough to deal with Dreamweaver? Not that I'd do a huge amount of web design on here, but if I loaded Photoshop and Dreamweaver on one of these things, would the processor handle them okay, or is it hopeless? I'd really rather prefer to take one of these on my bike with me than my current big ol' laptop...
I've got a samsung NC10 - mainly because the keyboard is like 95% of a normal keyboard - which I found made a big difference when I triedo ut a few. I could keep speed typing at my usual speed.
Does depend on what she's using it for tho - if shes not typing novels on it, it's possibly a bit pricer than other options.
"What cha readin' fer??"
Whatever you buy, buy as per what you plan to use it for. Don't end up buying a processing powerhouse with the best of everything and spending a bomb, if/when you're not gonna end up using any of it
Optimize and you'll save on moneys.
PS: Just felt like saying that cause these days I've been seeing a lotta people complain about really expensive stuff that they buy but all they sit and do on it is open Firefox/IE or Microsoft Word the most.
And I will confess, it is EFFING tempting to pick up the awesomest one in the catalogue
Yeah - try and get somewhere where you can try them out if poss. As Jurgal says I went for the one I wanted - large keyboard for speed - rather than teeny screen for size/weight etc.
"What cha readin' fer??"
i have a dell inspiron 15something and it's my best friend. the RAM could be a bit faster but that's easy to upgrade i think. it was like $478 with plenty of memory space and processing speed. 15 inch screen i think and it's light enough. those small ones don't have much space on them and they're kind of girly...
It depends on what you're using it for, mines perfect for me as I use it most of the time on the train and at 10" it fits on the seat-back tables well enough to use. Depends how on the go Tuffys mum is and if she wants something lightweight to carry too.

a lady was in circuit city in little rock a week into their massive blowout-
massive blowout sale meant that the dvd-r fifty pack i bought a week before the sale for eleven dollars turned into thirty-six dollars but with ten percent off
i.e. liquidators are scam artists
anyway
lady was leering at an open box laptop with a few scratches and a low-low price tag of seven-fifty. she asked me what i thought. i asked her a few questions-
turns out, she only wanted to access her email and myspace while at her station at work. i recommended her to go to walmart and buy a brand new netbook for three hundred.
i'm actually torn on them. i love the basic idea of the netbook, and ive played with a few. theyre light, compact (i can almost fit one in my wallet), quick.. but i will probably, ultimately choose a fourteen inch notebook.
and mike:
you can run word and similar programs on a netbook.. basically, it is a web surfing tool that happens to also be a word processor. you just cant do shit like play or burn cds.
so, tuff.. my understanding is that netbooks are word processors that can surf the web easily and have a nice battery life and can fit in most purses nowadays

yeah if it's for your mom, you should totally get her a mini one. they're you know...cute.
Since they discontinued the dell mini 9, I just ordered a Dell Vostro A90, which is an exact clone of the mini 9, but in all black, running ubuntu. It should be here later this month, and I cannot fucking wait.

I use Dreamweaver with mine and all of the Microsoft Office apps. I haven't run into an issue with any of it. Photoshop maybe a whole different ballgame though, I'm sure it would load no problem but rendering large images may bog you down quite a bit.
If I didn't have another more powerful laptop, I wouldn't have purchased it but it's a second computer for travel and coffee shops.

That's what I needed to hear!
thanks, rory. i definitely needed to hear from someone with experience about the word processing prowess of a netbook !

tuffy. this thread has motivated me to look into one more immediately than previously intended. ive made some research--a few hours yesterday and a few hours this morning. amazon, ebay listings, reviews online, and on the phone with friends. so i've prepared a discourse for you and it starts like this:
the lenovo is likely the highest rated netbook for writers. from what i've heard, most writers prefer it because it is well known to NOT fuck up. the way clevenger lost a lot of his second novel because of a hard drive crash, that is something that most writers seem to fear, which motivated lenovo sales. nowadays, though, i'm sure flash drives, cheap as they are, pretty much remain relied upon. (i have several.)
but i want a solid state drive. the only ssd that i have found is in a small (8.9") hp. that's the one i am about to head out the door to go and play with at the locate best buy store. they have one for three hundred. that one breaks down like this:
i gig of ram--half inside and half removable. you can upgrade the removable memory to a full gig for a total capacity of 1.5 gigs of ram.
the ssd is something a bit different.. it is split. eight gigs are internal and the other eight gigs are on an sd card that is removable. basically, you should keep only your operating system on the internal and everything else, keep on the removable sd card. that promotes best processing time and battery life. and since you can now find 32 gb sd cards on eBay for $40, that is probably what i'll wind up using. eight in the netbook and thirty-two in the slot, for a total of 40 gigs of ssd space.
the battery: the hp that i am looking at is a three-cell. but you can buy a nine-cell for $50 online and it will last for something like eight hours. the three cell, something like three hours. (there is also a five-cell; you extrapolate.)
and built in webcam. never had one before.
for my use-
what i want is a cheap, compact and light weight word processor that i can surf the web with. there are three usb ports. there is a slot for the sd card and another slot that is a media reader. sd, memory pro, probably flash as well.. i will probably NOT use a program as big as my word 2k7. probably just open office, and not the full version. put a few gigs of pictures and mp3s on the sd card along with my antivirus and the word processing. and that would be really all i'll keep on it.
i'll try to remember to nav back here after i go and play with one here in a bit

I always have a usb stick with me, use it on the netbook (backup if you want) then keep using the same stick/file when at home/work whatever (after backing up). Uber portable & backed up all over.

I love how "made some research" and "obiesly" are just generally accepted phrases around here now.
Does phrase seizes the hearth like wildfires, Big Balls Nathiel Parker!
"seize this, honkus!"
and "sammiches", of course.

and georgina, i always have a flash card around my neck if i am out of town for whatever reason. that's my half gig. i have a sixteen with all our photos in back of the desktop comp, a four gig flash card in the camera that i usually store a few things on as well. theyve become obiesly cheap or whatever in the past few years..

I'll go ahead and take partial credit for this.

oh, clearly haHA it was the perfect combination of you and that word and shoutbox that made "sammich" a household word at my house-

I thought "sammich" was kind of universal though, isn't it?
got mine tonight. an hp with a 16 gig ssd. loading it now how i want it.
the last laptop i had was a notebook, years ago when i started here. this is better. loaded the "writer" version of open office--minus the spread sheets and outlook and such. deleted the trial version of office 2k7. i have a version we bought, but i'm keeping the ssd low in used space. i deleted many programs from the devise. it is a small 10.1" screen, but i'm going to write a short story with it tomorrow. test the waters..
it is sleek, light weight and doesnt get hot on the lap. so far, i am fronting a shit eating grin-

I have an acer aspire one with the 8.9 inch screen...
I fucking love it!
So much so that it's officially my only computer, it has pretty much everything I need and I can take it everywhere in my bag. Prior to my purchase(I got it for 298 at the Wal-Mart in Fairbanks, ak), I had done some research on them and read a lot of complaints about the keyboards just being too small for extended typing, but I have not found that to be the case. With that being said, I do not touch type, I just peck with my index and middle fingers, so I can imagine is someone did touch type it could be a bit uncomfortable. Anyways, I am not good at reviewing shit, I like mine, I like it A LOT, and I'm super glad I bought it.
