Microsoft Word
Does anybody know if there is any legit to semi-legit way to get Word for free? It's on the laptop but I want it on the desktop(I don't have the discs).I don't expect that there is, but just in case. Thanks guys

Maybe some sort of torrent, they have fuckin everything. But that's just a guess.
Yeah, don't do that.
Too, I was going to recommend OpenOffice. Free, Legal, & Fully-Functional.

Downloading openoffice right now, thanks a million friends!

Mostly fully-functional. I've only had a few problems with it, but if you're not going to be doing spreadsheets, data analysis, or power points, you should be more than all right. A pretty competent word processor, though i've a few gripes there as well.
All and all, i approve of it.

I'm just planning on using it as a word processor. Even if it's not the best, I can't complain about the price!

It's been my main word processor for years and I've not had any issues with it. Never really used it for any of the other Office-y features.
There's also Google Document or whatever it's called, which has the added benefit of being, whatchacallit, vaporware? Cloudware? I dunno; it doesn't live on your pc.

My main gripe with it as a word processor is that a lot of the auto-correct things are difficult to turn off and some of it still feels a bit janky to me.
But i've been using it for about six months and it's good enough.
i also recommend the open source processor. we have ms office oh-seven on the desktop because my wife works for the va and she has to deal with spreadsheets and power points and such and it was twenty bux for employees. on my netbook, i use open office, for workshopping, writing. i have used it for a couple of years now. it is pretty friendly.

So, speaking of the workshop, if I use openoffice or something similar, doesn't the person who opens it have to have the same software?

that ^^^ was created on my netbook using openoffice and posted from there too. and i now i am back on my desktop and just opened it with ms word.
cool. see you in the shop.
ps- a buddy of mine was working on a paper and his free trial of ms word outdated. halfway through his paper. i was talking with his girlfriend and she said he'd have to rush to school in the morning to type it. so i called him. i told him about open office. he was thrilled that he wouldnt have to spend the money on ms word AND he got his paper done that night.
these are the true stories of the surviving victims of ms word....

While OpenOffice is a great solution, you may want to check AbiWord. It doesn't have all the functions as it is intended to be a light text editor. But if you just need to type your text, with some links, lists, spell checking and similar stuff (actually things that will do for most of us) it can be a great thing for you. And there is also portable (i.e. non-installing) version that you can put on your memory stick and run on any windows computer you come across.

Not quite Microsoft Word, but basically the same thing.
