Snake Eater came out this month......and I've been too poor to even rent it. I've yet to even speak to anyone who's played it and I'm getting sick of looking screenshots of it on the net. Has anybody played this yet. The first two rocked and I'm just hoping that this one does as well.

Gamespot gave it an 8.7 but a quite contrary glowing review. It looks more interesting that the frankly blah part 2

Hedio Kojima has done it again, the legendary video game creator who gave us Metal Gear Solid, the first game to get the title of stealth espionage action; has just delivered the third and final game of the Metal Gear Solid franchise. New setting, era, characters, and much more. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake eater is a must play for any gamer who enjoys stealth espionage action.

This epic game takes you back in time, before the events of Metal Gear Solid. The basis of this game is to reveal more secretes about the first two games. Unraveling the past of Snake, the mysterious hero of the Metal Gear Solid games. Metal Gear Solid 3 is not only set back in a different era, there is also a completely different setting. In the previous games, all the action took place inside of a base. Now Snake is thrown into a Jungle, with only the necessary tools: a knife, tranquilizer gun, binoculars, a cigar, and a fake death pill, along with a revival pill. Starting the game off with very little rations. There is no doubt; Hedio Kojima once again will take you through a unique in-depth plot that has more twist and turns than a roller coaster.

Nikolai Stepanovih Sokolov, a Russian scientist who defected to the United States, was given to the Soviets in order to end the Cuban Missile crisis. But the US had no clue why they wanted Sokolov, Sokolov was being held captive at the Soviet weapons facility Granzy Grad, and being forced to make a horrible weapon; a tank that could launch a nuke up to six thousand feet away. The CIA's FOX unit sends Jack into the jungles of Russia to rescue Sokolov and stop them from completing this weapon.
The key elements to this game are stealth, Snake has to make his way through the jungle and keep enemy contact at the minimum. Now there is something new to enhance the stealth engine of the game, Snake can now change into different types of camouflage to hide better in the environments. There will always be a camo to wear in any situation. If snake is sneaking around at night time, it would be best to wear the darkest camo, along with the black face paint. If he is climbing a mountain pass dodging enemy outpost, wearing the desert camo would be best. Finding how effective a certain camo is easy. In the top right corner of the screen will be some numbers, the higher the numbers are, the less visible Snake is. When the numbers are in the red, Snake could be spotted with ease.

CQC stands for "close qorters combat." Basically CQC is holding a pistol and knife at the same time, and if enemies are close enough and shooting them would be a waste of time, Snake can grab a hold of his opponent and take them down, with out wasting any ammunition.

Since MGS3 (Metal Gear Solid 3) is located in the jungle, it also adds an element of survival to the game play. Under the health bar is a new stamina bar. When Snake is shot or hit down to the ground it takes some stamina away, stamina is also taken away by running around, jumping, climbing trees, hanging off the side of a cliff, and almost about everything Snake does. Eating fills the stamina bar back up. Stamina is very important; with out stamina Snake's wounds will not heal quickly or at all. It also becomes difficult to see when his stamina is low, hindering aiming skills. Since he was dropped into the jungle with very little food supplies Snake must search and hunt for food. Many different things to be eaten can be found in the wilderness: snakes, bunnies, frogs, goats, alligators, fish, fruit, and mushrooms. Each food item heals back different amounts of stamina; the amount of regeneration depends on Snakes taste buds. The better he likes an animal, more stamina will return to the bar than if he were to eat something that is not so tasty. But he can't just store up as much meat as he wants if kept to long meat will go bad, and Snake can get food poising.

Another new feature to hit the MGS series is tending to serious wounds. Snake will get injured badly, weather it’s a deep cut in his arm, a broken leg, gun shot wound in the chest, its inevitable. There are no hospitals located in these jungles, so he must heal himself. Snake is outfitted with bandages, ointments, splints, stitching kits, and almost anything needed to cure anything. When seriously wounded regenerating the health bar will cease.

All these new features make Snake seem like a living person, but where MGS3 really shines, is in the graphics and cinematic.

This game always is finding someway to astonish, great new features to the game play, which add so much to the core of the MGS series. But to put the cherry on the top, MGS3 is a spectacle to see. The graphics are stellar; the environments capture so much realism it is like being in an actual jungle. Fallen tree's have moss, the grass moves when Snake walks through it, jungle noises are in the background, light shines through the leaves. The jungle is alive. And the cinemas of MGS3 are top-notch quality; they make the game seem like a movie that the viewer can also play along with. The detail in the cinemas are outstanding, I found it really neat how they show the camo Snake was wearing during game play into the cinematic. Another thing about the cinematic that really enhance the experience is how MGS3 allows the gamer to zoom in, or choose a different camera angle. During cinema's the gamer can choose to see through Snakes eyes, for example: Snake is crouching on top of a hill peering over a enemy outpost, he pulls out his binoculars and zooms in closer. However all that is shown is Snake looking into some binoculars, a button in the top right corner of the screen will say RI. By pressing the RI button on the controller I could view what going on through Snakes eyes. But this is not always allowed. Because the first person view can only been selected when the RI appears in the upper right corner.

Although the cinema's of MGS3 are really awesome, and are very important to the story. They can sometimes be to long; a lot of talking goes on in many of these movies, not all of them are action packed. I found my self playing the game for around ten minutes, then setting the controller down and watching a cinema for more than half an hour. And I could not skip it, because it was key to the plot. MGS games provide an epic deep plot, but unfortunately you have to sit through it first. They are not unbearable to watch; the voice acting is wonderfully done. Every character seems to have a voice that fits their personality perfectly. And the music score is filled with very dramatic music. The theme song to MGS3 sounds like a theme song from a James Bond movie. Titled "Snake eater" just like how any James Bond movie theme is titled the same as the subtitle of the movie. It's also sung with a dramatic toned woman and the opening of the game looks very much like any opening credits to James Bond.

Which brings in the downsides of the game. MGS games have always demanded a large amount of patience. But not as much as MGS 3, there are times where I waited for five minutes crouched behind a log waiting for the alert level to go down, so it would be safe to move around again. Also watching the cinemas, some of them are very long, and skipping them would be very confusing. So its best when playing this game to have a good time chunk set up. I will admit, I was almost late to work because of MGS3's cinemas. But overall, I loved this game. Stunning visuals, great game play, everything new in the game was great, but I wish I could pause during the movies. I give Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for the Playstation 2, a 5 out of 5.

The only thing I disliked about this game from finish to end was the damn scientist who developed the tank being a total calm and level character when he was talking nerd talk then shifts into this whimpering gimp when anyone whipped out a gun and pointed it near his direction. I understanding cowering from death but this just got too ridiculious. Samething goes for the other dude constantly pointing around like Fonz with his hands everywhere. (If you played the game you know who I'm talking about.) Plus Snake is completely a cold fish but on a transmitter he is mister perv suave. Outside of those things though, it makes for a great game. I just wish they cut out the cornyness of it all.

"Life is like a beautiful rotting apple. On the outside and inside its rotten, but the concept of eating a fresh apple stirs in ones mind. That's the beauty, the thought of a juicy apple, its sweet taste filling the mouth. But in reality, right here and now. It's a rotting piece of shit. Rotten to the core. That's life, never what we want; only what we can dream about matters. Reality is overrated; thoughts are the stew stirs."

I finally finished it. Playing it seemed like such a choir. Enemy soldiers would walk right pass me even if I'm stand next to them or not see me when I'm standing only few feet away from them. But that's probably because I was playing on 'very easy' (I was playing 'very easy' for the dog tag extra which they didn't have). I'm sure it'll be more fun and challenging on high difficulty level but story was just so ridiculous I don't know if I want to play it again. Hmm, I don't know, maybe I'll give it another chance. But not now.

Poorest of all three, plus the remake, which I also hated...

It was awesome. I played through it, beat it, then sold it the next day, sort of wish I hadn't too, but oh well. The story is sooo much better than the other MGS games. It's not weird, except for Volgin and the The Pain, they were a little weird. The Fear and The Sorrow I could understand. And Ocelot is so fucking awesome in this game. Especially towards the end of it. I don't think there were any spoilers there, unless Ocelot living is one, but then again, he's in MGS so thinking he'd die just makes you a dumbass.

Seeing as how this one is set in the 1960s I can't see how Ocelot would have been dead since he's clearly alive in the late 90s early 00s so it's not really a spoiler.

Edit - disregard, didn't fully get the meaning of your last sentence, dumb me!

I'm an uberdork, so I've played through it about 5 times so far to get all the secret items and such. I love the MGS series and this one is one of the best.

Thanks for the review. I take my bio final tomorrow and as soon as I sell my book I'm walking across the street to Best Buy and picking it up. I also need to score a copy of Hitman Contracts. Also a wicked cool series.

On the other difficulties it gets REALLY HARD. You start the game with very little health and supplies. And the soldiers will spot you! I started a game on hard mode, and died the first time i encounterd a soldier. yeah...its hard. im currently on normal mode.

/\ I disagree, you can never have too many MGS threads....never. But it is important to keep things tiddy.

I agree, as much as I don't like the PS2 i really need to pick one up for MGS, Final Fantasy, and Xenosaga. I mean, I love my Gamecube but after Resident evil 4 all I got next year in the way of big titles is the new Zelda.

And in keeping with the thread, I played this game for awhile at a friend's house and it's awesome. Much more in the way of stealth than the last two and much more fully realized.

What did you exactly didn't like about the second one? And what is your quarrel with Raiden? Because I thought it was quiet good. Better story, better characters especially the bosses, just better almost everything compared to the third...

I don't think people would have had such a problem with Raiden if they'd known they would play as him to begin with. I only found this out recently, but the director of the MGS series, Hideo Kojima, had the screenshots and movies that were released before the game to be altered to show snake performing Raiden's half of the game. Needless to say, people were pissed when they found out the truth. Being my first Metal Gear game, I had no qualms with the system but it was very sly on Kojima's and Konami's parts.

I think withholding Raiden from promotion was to more than anything keep the lid on, keep people from the spoiler rather then, you know, bad intesions. But I guess it's understandable how people feel cheated. Personally, after the initial 'hm?', I was over it...

Oh, it was for promotion, I don't think there were any ill intentions there but many of the fans of the series were majorly pissed. I didn't think it was a big deal but it was also my first Metal Gear if you don't count the old NES ones.

I almost forgot, a lot more fans were also pissed because they thought you spent most of your time in cinematics or talking on the Codec which is true, but if you played the first MGS shouldn't have been a shock. Same reason people were against Final Fantasy X, they thought it was basically a movie.

Well, after playing thru the third MGS multiple times, I decided to run through the second one again to get the story again. Since I didn't enjoy it the first time through, I didn't play through again unlike the first and third. I enjoyed the story a little bit better but still didn't like it as much as the others. Its just sooooo slow. The codec convos at the end are waaaay too long.

As far as Raiden, I didn't mind playing as him, but they should have chosen a better voice actor. he sounds like a whiney version of Ferris Bueller.
