Kindle...
I've been a fan of the site for years, just recently (as in about 3 hours ago) figured I'd join
"The Cult"
I couldn't find a search button, do I need glasses?
Anyway, As of late, I'm thinking about one of those Amazon Kindle things. Anyone have one?
I spend about 2 hours a day on a train commuting to and from work, sometimes I just don't feel like whipping out a book, you know?
There is the $400 price tag, but once you have it books are around $10 average. So in about 3 years it will pay for itself? Plus there is something nice about just a book itself, the cover, the pages...that whole book thing.
I'm really up in the air about this.....so if you have one lets get some pro's and con's ...
Do these things even work on Macs? If not i'm shit outta luck I guess.
i can barely manage to bring myself to read stuff on my 19 inch monitor. I can't even fathom trying to do it on whatever size small screen those things have.
I say fight the power and damn the kindle! Use that 400 bucks to buy more books.
You could buy the store at Half Price Books for that amount.
plus, the kindle uses its own proprietary format. the books you buy for it, you cant read on a pc or any other ebook reader you may move to in the future. you're locking yourself into kindle.
that just seems wrong.
i like to collect books, but id consider an ebook reader if it was an open format and there were some way to backup my existing library without a lot of cost or fuss.
that price is pretty retarded too. you can buy a computer cheaper than that.
you can probably hire chuck to personally read Pygmy to you for that price!!!
granted, that would only be one book, but still...
I havent tried a kindle for all of the reasons stated above. I did try downloading books to my DS, but it was awful. I'd rather lug around 10 books on holiday than try and read off a little screen.
"What cha readin' fer??"
I'm considering getting one because it seems awesome for textbooks, but I don't know if I'm ready to part with bound books yet.
No way. I like books. Like physical books and turning pages. And $400 is a lot of books.
I don't think I could use this. I have a great deal of difficulty reading very long and involved things on my computer screen. I can't imagine trying to read an entire book on something even smaller. I really love to read a book - to have it in my hands.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
Last night I had a drunk dream that I was John Connor fighting the resistance.... they were all carrying Kindles and Cell Phones.... I shot them all down
The more convenient and easier something is to use, they more someone will put it off. I can see people reading maybe a 'page' at a time on a kindle.
Fuck this horrible technological age. Read a damn book, dont be afraid of the creaking.
I like what Chuck said, "You cant sign a kindle"
douche
i'm honestly attracted to the idea of a kindle II . when we go on trips, particularly mild backpacking epics, books get heavy. gone out of town for the weekend, there is always a few in the bags. bulky, especially if i rode a train or buss regularly. though i love the feel of a book in hand, the kindle II seems like a great way to conveniently read because it's slim, the screen coloring is light on the eyes, the battery is lasting, and it's very unheavy/unbulky.
my two cents

play hard, like it's work to be done.
it can read pdfs and there are a ton of, um, free reading material on the web if you know where to look.
the price is a bit steep and i suggest you wait until they come out with color e-ink or until the price comes down.
Forget this silly technological device!

I couldn't see myself ever using one because I just love the feeling of having a book too much. When you're reading you get to hold it, and it just has a...comforting feel to it. Plus I like to collect books.
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
