pretty good. But you can have too much of a good thing: my battery power only lasts about two and half hours at most.

i have 3500 songs with me everywhere i go. cd's are obsolete for me and only serve as backup or a means by whichto steal music. i have an fm transmitter so i now don't need cd's in my bedroom, bathroom, car and since everything is on my computer, my den.

if you get one, check out ilounge.com. you can download hacks and theres a forum.

Get a creative Zen touch. They're quite ugly and clunky BUT mine hasn't faulted me once. they freeze, like all mp3 players, so simply carry around a paper clip so you can press the reset button.
24 hours battery life, 20g, i've had mine over half a year and the battery life hasn't shown any signs of decrease.
iPods rock but i've heard so many complaints about them and me and a few friends have creative zen touch mps players because they're cheaper and none of us have ever had a problem.
iPods are way sexier though.
I love my Zen touch just because it's always performed perfectly.

Dude save yourself a couple bucks and buy one of the other brands. Creative makes great mp3 players, as does Dell. With Apple, your paying more for the name. I have the Dell Pocket DJ thats 5GB and it only cost me $180 and all my friends who have seen mine like it just as much as the iPod but get mad when they realize I only spent half the price on it. Do your research before commiting to a specific brand.

Don't be a cheap-ass, buy an ipod. Or have someone buy one for you. I was so pleased with Hula Girl when she arrived, so sweet and small and blue and cold. I use her all the time, I got some little speakers for her and made a special four poster bed with a kit I bought from this craft shop....

For what it's worth, I also have a Dell Pocket DJ. My wife has the iPod Mini. The iPod, despite having less space, is what I would pick if I did it all over again. It has a better interface, better software, better everything except the smaller size and that it doesn't play WMA files (which was my whole collection was ripped into and the reason I picked the Dell).

Just getting playlists put together for the Dell is a serious pain. You can't export them through WMP. You can sync the music but not the lists, which is so dumb it hurts.

The creative software is no iTunes but it's easy to use and it isn't like you need to use it as your sole media player on your computer.
All I know is all the complaints about iPods breaking and there hasn't been any major fuss over the zen touch.
do it

Yeah the batteries do wear out but you can get them replaced now and they won't die so soon as long as you respect them!

creative has the far superior battery technology (24 hours in some cases) to ipod's (12-14 hours), and they tend to last longer, but ipod kills everyone else in a)accessories b)options c)software. like most good things, the extra few bucks is usually worth it in the end.

I can't help you there. I am a hardcore audiophile at home and an audio-book addict at work, and I have zero use for an iPod. Plus, I'm not an Apple guy, so if I was going to buy such a device, I'd go out of my way to avoid buying one from the people who make the un-computer.

I think in most places it's illegal to drive wearing headphones, though the stringy little things they pass off as headphones on those things would be hard to see from a distance. Unless you get ones like the commercial, that turn you into a silhouette and glow against your dancing form.

It just occurred to me: I know peope who've been stopped by cops even wearing ear-buds, but cops in some places will also ticket you for 'not' using a hands-free cell phone. Talking on a phone, I'm certain, makesyou drive more Diana Rossy than any song.

Unless you dance like you're in an iPod commercial while you drive...

No, you can hook it up to your car stereo and play it through your speakers. I'd use it to burn my entire CD collection onto it and put a CD changer to shame.

iPods can be listened to without headphones. There are radio transmitters that can be attached to the iPods that pick up a frequency on a certain FM station and you can hear your music that way. Also there are are auxillary jacks that can be connected to them from the car (which I have in my vehicle). Like alot of ads say, "Just play it on shuffle and every drive has its own soundtrack!"

What's even crazier is there's cops trying to bust them for it (when they're not looking for someone talking on a cell phone without the equivalent gear).

i like using speakerphone when i'm driving....i hate those jerks w/ the wireless ear piece who walk around talking into the air....how are we supposed to tell who's crazy when everyone is talking to themself? or i'll be talking to them not knowing that they have a number dialed then all of a sudden, when someone picks up, i get cut off.

I do it all the time, actually. But I don't turn the music up very loud, so I can still hear things like car horns, if my tire fell off, etc.

When the radio died in my volvo and before I replaced it with an in-dash CD player I used to use a portable CD player and headphones. I would keep them off though and just crank up the volume as high as possible. I figured that a cop would probably try to pull me over for it, since the areas I was driving through probably had me on their shitlist at the time.

I just always keep my ears covered up by my hair when I have the ear buds in, and you can't even tell. I've been sitting next to cop cars at stoplights and never had a problem.

there are car adaptors for things like iPods.
there are these things that are tapes but with a wire poking out the end that plugs into a headphone socket on a portable CD player or whatever so the CD player plays through the speakers.

I got my car stereo pinched by some knuckledragging fuckbiscuit a couple of nights back.

On the up-side, I went to get a new one and they had a fairly decent model that had full "iPod functionality"

The iPod sits in a little cradle, plugged into the stereo via a wire that drops from beneath the dash. The front of the stereo gives you full control of the iPod functions. I've only mucked around with it for a little while, but it seems brilliant - and not too pricey. Could it be that this theiving bastard was in fact an angel in disguise? No, he's still a fucker, but I do have a nice new radio.

Anyway, just letting you folks know.

You should surround your car with parrots, teach them how to imitate a cough and then no one will want to steal anything because it all might be infected. Like bird flu security and stuff.

i have the creative zen micro- its smaller than a deck of cards- and about a half inch thick.
its awesome and its the touch- has voice recorder (so you can cheat on exams) not that i would- but im just saying that you can- it has an organizer, an alarm clock and a really easy way of getting the stuff onto and off of it. I dont know where I would be without my Zen.

I'm sure if you shop around you can get a far better system than this, but the one I went for (Goodmans) was pretty much the cheapest decent stereo that was designed to be compatible with the iPod. My car's a heap of shit, so I don't really want a system that's more expensive that the motor that carries it.

Also, having fucked about with it for a day or so now, I'd say that it is still brilliant to have this functionality in the car, but using the damn thing is far from intuative. I'll be digging out the manual a fair few times in the next week I think.

If you've got cash to burn, there are some majorly brilliant stereos out there which basically act as an extension of your iPod / mind.

Anyway, here it is:

The thing about the iPod is that it is much more than just a MP3 Player. You can keep your entire (or most) of your music library, thousands of photos, a calendar, contacts, notes, and so on.

Apple finally did it right with the 5G. Read the full iLounge review of the Apple iPod video @ http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/comments/apple-computer-ipod-5g-with-video-30gb-60gb-ipod/

I myself bought a 60GB black iPod video. I'm not opening it until x-mas day. The batt. problem has been fixed, it no longer cost over $290 to get the battery changed. It goes about $60 for a battery fix.

I underestimated the power of iTunes. Try the software, and reorganize your music. You won't believe how much music you really own, and you will find yourself listening to some favorite tracks you haven't heard in years, but still were intact on your harddrive. My favorite feature about iPod is podcasting. I love the idea of listening to my favorite news/politics/tech/gaming shows on the go! I no longer have time per day to spend hours online, only weekends, so it's nice to sync it every morning, and then listen to podcasts on campus.

I highly recommend the iPod + iTunes.

ps. I was an iPod skeptic for years. Then I watched this: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/specialeventoct05/ (quicktime). I carefully researched for 2months, I then played around with iTunes, and I am now reorganizing my entire music collection. I can now find my favorite songs on-the-fly, and the software is so much better than Windows Media Player 10 *when it comes to music/video*.

I bought one of the 5G video ipods right after they came out and I friggin love it. It's nice to just let it run on shuffle and have it play songs from your collection that you've forgotten about. If I wasn't a student right now and didn't spend loads of time walking around and waiting for classes I wouldn't use one much at all. It's also really cool not to have to drag along both gigantic case logic CD binder things everytime there's a road trip. My wife has an ipod shuffle which I've used a few times when I went for a run. If you are looking for something to use for working out I'd say hands down that the shuffle is the way to go. Its so compact that you forget its even there.

I'm not getting an iPod video until they work out all the kinks. I'll stick to my 20G for now.

My friend has an iPod Video that she just got for X-mas. The videos kind of freeze a bit while the audio keeps going......and just yesterday the screen turned white and it stayed that way. She couldn't turn it off or anything.

Too bad. The iPod is idiot proof. Tell her to hold the menu and center button at the same time for 2 sec to reset her iPod. If she used the latest iPod video version (1.1) and latest iTunes version, she'd probably be doing a lot better.

I've had my first iPod since late December, and I love it so far.
