I'm a Mac... And Have A Question Regarding Mac Book Batterys
SO I just recently bought myself a mac book (yay, debt!), and I found myself posing a query, to, uh-myself. When I got my Ipod it was recommended that I completely drain the battery and than recharge it, come to think of it I got the same advice for my cell phone as well. Anyways, does this apply to lap tops as well, will continually plugging it in weaken the battery, or is that just a myth like shaving will just make it grow back quicker?

shaving does make it grow back quicker and thicker too!
Myth seems to hold true for me anywhere on my body except my face.

Hm thank you for the advice, I let the battery icon go red and than plugged 'er in.

it is absolutely true that modern day laptop batteries will degrade if constantly left plugged in. it's best to cycle them at least a few times a week if you're going to be plugged in a lot. charge all the way, then run it and go about your business until the mac notifies you that you're low on power.
i killed a pc laptop battery by always plugging in. a year later it would hold about 5 minutes charge unplugged. the macbook pro i've had for the last eight months has been a mix of on-the-go and plugged, and still reports over 90% battery health after 297 charge cycles.
with the ipods, im not sure what the deal is. i walk with mine, but most of the time its in a recharging dock, whether its the one built into the stereo i play it out of in my room or the transmitter in my car - ive never had a chance to listen to it until the battery drains, so i cant speak to whether or not it's battery life is worse off for it.
Why would you go into debt for any computer, specifically an overpriced one?

cmon now, it was a battery question, not an invite for a mac vs pc war.
i even admitted to having once owned a PC. isnt that enough of a nod towards peace?
This isn't a pc/mac thing, its why would you go into debt for a laptop? Desktops are so much cheaper and their are so many public computers, so I don't see why you would go into debt for a computer.
edit: please fix your italics.

ahh, gotcha. since the price of some laptops matches desktops these days i assumed you were picking at a branding issue. my mistake.
i agree completely, it's foolish to go into debt over most things in life, unless the debt is an investment for something that will allow you to pay off the debt and profit ultimately.
edit: hahaha. i didnt realize the all-mighty drupalboard would allow something as simple as a text-style flag to carry over one poster to the next. fancy!

I've always wanted a Mac, and I've always wanted a laptop: I don't like dropping lots of dough on anything that' unneeded but this has been a buy I've wanted for quite some time now. And plus, what's the point of saving money and not spending it on things you like?

for me it was an easy decision. mac software is the industry standard in my fields, and while i could build a hackintosh, it wouldn't come with the all encompassing quality warranty you get from apple.
ive got a 2.5ghz macbook pro with 4gigs of ram, and a gt8800 video card with 512megs of it's own ram. it's been great for photo editing and graphic design, and not bad for video editing. i'm waiting another quarter or two for them to start putting quad-core processors in their imacs, as my desktop machine is seven years old and starting to sputter. once snow leopard is released, those quad-core processors are going to skyrocket performance beyond anything we've ever seen. im geeked
they just updated their whole line, now is a great time to buy. the new macbooks, like the one you got, are supposed to clock in not too far under last years macbook pro line, thanks to the graphic and chip updates.
i love the reliability. i've run this macbook pro for a month at a time without turning it off, no software or OS crashes. plus, any hardware issues, mac is always quick to fix.

Yeah I went to the Apple store closest to me, that involved a fun detour through a crime-riddled neighborhood where the sidewalks are littered with over-turned shopping carts. Fun!
Where do you work, what do you do?

about a year and a half ago i got very sick, had to leave my job.
decided to try to turn my hobby, photography, into a marketable skill. since then it's grown into a home based freelance photography & design gig. i've been studying video editing, and am saving for a movie camera, hoping to add that to the works someday. it's really gratifying, getting to do this for a living

I think it's true of any rechargable battery. Though I was told to not let it drain completely, but get very low before recharging.
