Hot shit from Apple: Mac Mini, iPod Shuffle
http://www.apple.com/macmini/
Apple has finaly come out with an afordable computer.

its US$499, doesnt come with a keyboard, mouse or monitor, but it can use any old PC USB mouse or keyboard and any old PC monitor

iPod Shuffle

a 512MB or 1GB flash drive version of the iPod
it is designed to play songs randomly and doesnt have a screen or any indicator of what songs are playing
But at $99 and $149 it is pretty good for a well designed USB drive of that size that can also play music.
not too excited about the iPod, but the Mac has me interested.

Although I'd love to have a mini mac just for using photoshop, flash and iTunes on.
Plus its so adorable. I'd put a pillow next to mine and rest it on it at night, then I'd say "goodnight, Mac Mini." and kiss it on its disc isertion thingee
also, to make this even more like it should be in IMs, didnt you have a VCD copy?
I'd take that.

iPod shuffle is crap.
I'll quote a friend of mine:
"only steve jobs could spin the lack of functionality as a feature. fucking brilliant."
There's an IBM or Linux variation of this, and it's been around for a while. I can't remember the link but I'll look for it and post it today when I remember it and have a minute...

id get the ibm/linux compat just because it looks more expandable and less disposable.
any idiot can get a disposable machine (wiht all the monitor and shit) for the price of the mac POS for the same cash. a smarter person can buy the parts (using the same money) and build themselves a damn fine machine. ive done it, so i know this is possible.
which begs the question. if you can get an emachine with a mous, keynoard, monitor, and speakers for 500 bucks.. why then would you buy a mac without any of that for the same cost? hmmm..

OH SHI...!
SNAP! IN YO FACE APPLE!
Wachoo gunna do about it? Huh? HUH APPLE?!
LOOK AT ME! I'M APPLE! I ONLY HAVE ONE BUTTON ON MY MOUSE! I MUST BE PRETTY STUPID!
Look, you dont like macs, so? Who cares? Dont flame those that are interested.
Just because you have no use for it doesnt mean others dont.
Theres a reason why probably 80% of designers use apples. (yes I did pull that figure out of my ass.)
How is the OS flawed if it perfectly suits the audience it targets?
Your average Apple user doesnt give two fucks about fucking around with their system or playing the latest wizz bang games.
If you like that stuff, you dont use Apple.

The only reason I'd consider getting an Apple is when I want to buy Pro Tools and learn that. I'm not a big Mac fan but they seem good to use for graphics or sound purposes only. Not sure if I'd use it for an all-around machine or a gaming machine.
Then again I'm not too familiar with Linux or Unix either, so this could all be ass-talking going on.

these are both very cool, but i think they will fail miserably in the market.
as RT points out, the random ipod represents a step backward. people will buy it to save money, but then totally hate it after a couple weeks using it.
the macmini is totally awesome. i would love to have it. but the idea that people will replace their hunk o crap e-machine or gateway or dell with this little baby seems far fetched. they expect people to use the same monitor and keybord and mouse, and just toss the old machine in the trash. i just can't see that happening. i still love it, though!

Do you want a medal?
Good for you, you built your own computer. Alot of people dont want to. This is a cool new solution that wont look like a frankensetien monster. But whatever, there's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?

looks like i was wrong about the ipod shuffle:
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=569&e=13&u=/nm/tech_apple_dc
Im liking ipods less and less. Two weeks ago a friend lended me his for a couple of days, and it was constantly freezing up. Teh ipod shuffle cant be a good idea. You cant see what song is on. Its like listening to the radio, only hundreds of dollars more expensive.
Im more than happy with my CD/mp3 player. Up to 300 songs. And it cost me 40 bucks.
Other than that im an avid mac user.
i agree with trees.
ive always only had multi-format CD players. and im happy enough

I think the shuffle is pretty cool. Good points on why it's stupid, but here's the attraction -- it's small and portable. I like small. I like portable. Also, all the songs I have downloaded are songs I love to hear. So having a couple of hundred songs playing randomly is cool. It's not really like the radio, in the sense that the radio sucks and for every good song that comes on, it plays 10 crap songs.
I'm looking at you KRock. Sure, that Faith No More song is great, but listening to Trapt, Nickelback, Finger Eleven, Stone Sour and whatever the "hot" "rock" band is at the moment, it's just not worth it. Every song that would come on the shuffle, though, would be a song that I like.
To have a couple hundred songs, at a reasonable price, sitting on my desk, playing in the background of my head while I'm working, I don't think it's such a bad idea. Also, it would be good for when I go jogging.
But, and this is the only moment where I agree with everything here, I like angry music when I'm working out. So random would suck in this instance. Give me some Rage, some KMFDM, some Dropkick Murphys. Otis Redding or Lauryn Hill would kill the mood.

check Apple's site out now.
The 4GB mini is now just $50 more than the 1 gig shuffle, and a 6 gig Mini is now coming out.
I'd only get the shuffle now if you're gonna shake a HD player to hell while using it, thats where a solid state player like the shuffle would be the best option. It wont break while you jog.

The only downside, to me, of the iPod mini is how they really aren't that much cheaper than a regular iPod, which can hold a lot more songs than a mini. True, the mini is a nicer size and some people don't need all that HD space for mp3s, but to me, it just seems like the mini should be a lot cheaper, since it has much less storage space. Even 6 to 20 gigs is a huge gap.
I also noticed the "U2 special edition" iPod. Lame.

Holy crap.. just when I thought I was gonna pay off my Sears card.. I've found a new use for that money....
I really want last years iMac, the swivel head one, because they're so cool looking and I'm just a Mac guy through and through.. but I'm gonna hafta give this one a whirl, check it out at the store.
