Hideo Kojima
you are entitled to your opinion. i agree to some degree, but only in reference to the fourth installment. i completely hated everything about the gameplay. but the story was.... solid. as always. brought it all together and now they think that just because Raiden is badass unlike his previous appearances, that we actually want to play as him. Again. when the game is called Metal Gear Solid. i will still play it for the story. but Raidens emo-ass can blow me unless 5 gives me a better reason (to not blow him) other than chopping up watermelon.
Doesn't mean it isn't a work of genius.

agreed. this man knows what he is talking about.
i'm not a fanboy, by any means. I adore the first two, think the third one is MEH and the fourth one is garbage. GAMEPLAY wise.
the story for all of them is as close as it gets to perfection in the gaming world.
but i never mentioned MGS in my original post. I would like to shift the view over to Hideo Kojima himself as a writer and director and what makes him so great. i already know what, so i want to know what you guys think... citing specific examples, maybe someone could tell me their take on him. if they think he is a genius, like me. or if they think he's just another writer/director. and why they think this. i enjoy opionative posts, but i only respect them when their is elaboration on factual information.
any takers?
Most if not all Japanese developers are a joke at his point.
They've been making the same games for over a decade and that's really starting to bite them in the ass.

If were going to talk about the same basic game, what about the whole first person shooter craze going on right know. Very little story and same basic gameplay, yet people cant get enough of them.
As your attorney, my advise to you is to start drinking heavily(er).-Tuffy
That's what makes Kojima so different. His style is so different than other Japanese developers. He takes the retro action movie storylines and adds modern twists to them. He's like the Quentin Tarantino of game directors.
Saying Hideo is the "reatest Japanese Director of our time" really isn't saying much, since Japanese game devs are horrible compared to their western counterparts.
In terms of game design, I prefer Hideki Kamiya. He has at least made several awesome games across multiple genres.
oh boy, i love metal gear solid. the 3ed one had me in tears at the end and the 4th was wicked epic!
can't wait till rising
The problem with Japanese game developers is that they have a hard time breaking away from "tradition." The sheer amount of carbon copy JRPG's they've made is a testament to that.

They also refuse to learn from what others do right. Resident Evil 5 is a prime example of this. Western developers have nailed how you control a 3rd person action game. Yet for some reason, they make up their own control schemes almost as if they pull them out of a hat.
There is a reason why after Halo came out, every other console FPS copied their control scheme. Bungie was the first one to get it right.
has kojima ever done anything besides Metal Gear?
Yes, most recently he was Producer on Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Plus a bunch of other stuff. MGS is really his baby though.

Yeah, Metal Gear Solid is overrated as fuck.
