Have you tried running anti-spyware software like Ad Aware? If you do, watch out; some programs can't run without their little embedded spyware programs (cough, Kazaa, cough).

Kitty,

Definitely use Ad Aware.

http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10186632.html?tag=lst-0-1

Download it, install it, and do a Full System Scan on your harddrive. I do one every week. You'll see that you have more spam on your drives than you knew. And Ad Aware is so good, it can pretty much delete or quarantine anthing it finds without damage to the way your computer runs.

Good luck!

It scans your computer for spyware files that it recognizes and asks you whether or not you want them deleted.

Knox, Spyware is basically any piece of unwanted SPAM that is illegally sitting on your computer. And when I say "illegal," I basically mean that it didn't ask your permission first. It either got downloaded automatically without your knowing.... or attacked you through a program like Kazaa.

Example: Ever turn your monitor on sometimes, and see all these tiny pop-ups on your desktop of Ads.... when you're not even online!?!?

That's spyware.

This program removes them all and cleans your computer. It's good to do since some spyware can contain viruses that lay dormant and then attack you if accidentally triggered.

No, one of the great things about Ad Aware is that it pretty much only lists items that SHOULD deleted. If it's every unsure, it will prompt you maybe not to delete it. But if nothing like that pops up, you're good to delete them all.

Ad Aware is a pretty good app. for spyware removal. personally i use SpyBot Search & Destroy. not only does it sound cooler, but it's a bit more aggressive in it's removal of spyware, and by aggressive, i mean it not only removes the piece of spyware, but also any other parts that piece of spyware might try to leave behind.
shit, it even got bonzai buddy and the damned gator crapware.

Hahah... No, she won't have to. And it's reformat, not refragment.

But yeah.. Ad Aware is great. Problem is, if you use it and get rid of the shit that comes with Kazaa, well, then Kazaa doesn't work anymore. =\

Or at least that's what happened to me.. Maybe I fucked something up, I dunno. I should get kazaalite.. isn't that kazaa w/o all that bullshit?

kazaaLite is all you should have, it's kazaa w/o spyware. if you're on a pc, that is. WinMX is good for MP3's too, btw, although I can't find the new Jane's Addiction song dammit!!!

So why is it after I used ad-aware like five times in one day, I've still got these stupid Pop-ups all the time? The "Don't you hate these things" pop-ups and cheap pharmeceuticals ones, etc.

This is the only site I vist besides e-bay, and I haven't used Kazaa since I cleaned the PC.

WHY do companies do this? deposit software on your computer that they know you don't want, so they sneak it past you? it's not like advertisers plant products in your ass when you walk by their display in a store...so why do software companies do it?

i thought winMX was like, exclusive or something.

it's about money. if they know where you go on the internet (by using spyware and cookies to track your movements) then theoretically they can tailor pop-ups and other ads to your specific tastes. and this is all in hopes that one day you will click a link to one of their advertisers through them, so they can go back to the advertisers and say "well last week alone you had 500,000 people click on your advertisement from one of our pop-ups, so give us more money".
it's that type of thing.
pop-up, pop-under, and (my favorite) the see-through pop-up where you can never locate the damn "x" to close it down because it's fuckin' see-through.

i also enjoy how yahoo mail cracked down on spam emails...

...but notice how many more pop-ups are coing up at their site???

even my work email address is getting spam now, considering the only people that have my work email is less than 10, and they're all relatives....

Or perhaps I didn't think it was linked on page 1.

Or perhaps I didn't know that programs came up under searches on google.

Or perhaps BBS and news sites are about the onyl things I know how to operate.

But whatever.

either way proto, i do not suggest you use it then. it might be a bit much for you to handle, ask i said on my first page, it's more agressive, which also means you have to know what the fuck you're doing to be able to use it properly.
you are who the advertisers are aiming for.

I've been using iMesh "lite" and I like it much better than kazaa. I use Ad Aware and I love it. Also try Windows Washer. It is good for getting rid of crap files that you don't need. It has a 30 day trial and then you must uninstall and reinstall if you want to use it again. Or you could just get a pirated version (wink wink)

OK. I got AdAware. you guys were totally fuckin right...i was so amazed at how many things were on my computer. fuck those advertising people. fuck them right in the ear.

HOWEVER. FUCKING ORBIT EXPLORER is still on there. despite adaware, despite numerous attempts to delete it, it is STILL GODDAMN THERE. a friend of mine who is very knowledgeable about computers told me to hit CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and then find orbit in the processes, end the task, then try to delete it (it keeps giving me this "source file in use" bullcrap). i found what i thought was it and my comp. crashed. no more fucking around with system processes for me. i then got rid of kazaa and ran adaware again, to no avail.

i am really at the end of my rope here. apparently it's too much to ask to have what i want on my own goddamn computer. anyone else have any more advice?

Try and locate the actual file...... C drive/Program Files/Orbit/
and delete the whole folder from there.

Also, reboot first but turn off all yoru start-up items.

If using Windows, you do this by going to RUN..... then type in msconfig. It will bring up a prompt window with tabs. Click the tab that says "Start Up." It will list all your start-up items. Remember which ones are checked...... then click "Disable All" and restart your computer.

Then you might be able to delete that Orbit folder/file.

i've had this trouble with some files myself. it comes up telling me it cannot delete the file because it's in use, and it doesn't have a way to close that file out to delete it.
what i found works is find a file with the same extention as your problem file (in your case, orbit, whichever file it is having trouble deleting) and open the file with the same extention. this should free up your problem file for deleting. i would try this first, considering it is the simplist option.

extention as in ".exe"?

dennis, i'm running windows 2000 pro; maybe a different OS than you. in any event it gives me an error message when i type msconfig, but in my start menu when i go to settings there's a "taskbar and start menu" option. i can uncheck the things that are checked but there's no button for disable all. so i don't know if this will work the way you say...i'll try it anyway though.

i definitely know where the motherfucker hides out, and i've tried nine ways from sunday to delete the goddamn thing. it won't even let me open it--it says "access denied". and i'm like, ACCESS DENIED, YOU FUCK?!?!?!?!? THIS IS MY COMPUTER!!!

<-----------wrath.

have you tried going through your add/remove software folder? orbit leaves tracks in there.

i forgot to mention, orbit is just a variation of xupiter.
if they don't work for you, here are detailed manual removal instructions.

Quote:
Manual Removal (not all points may apply)

Start Regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete the DWORD "XupiterStartup"

Delete the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Xupiter

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SQ

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CLSID\{0FDA4D2B-7975-405d-8D7C-F5E2247EAE80}

Run the following commands to unregister the various DLLs - note that some of the files may not exist on your computer.

cd c:\windows\system (or as appropriate for your computer)
regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Xupiter\Updates\XupiterToolbar.dll"

Repeat for xtupdate.dll, xtsearch.dll, t.dll, u.dll, s.dll, toolbar.dll, redirector.dll, search.dll (not all files may exist on your computer).

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Browser\Updates\BrowserToolbar.dll"

Repeat for bwupdate.dll and bwsearch.dll

and if it persists on being a little pain in the ass...
try downloading and running this.
http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/
it's called Hijack This. most of it's entries that come back will be valid, so only check for orbit.
from what i've seen, orbit is pretty harmless, but a major pain in the ass to remove. g'luck.

i havent used win2000 in a while but is there an administrative tools choice on the start menu?

if so go to users and groups and make sure you have administrative rights then try uninstalling it again
(i could be wrong here...)

i still use windows 98-it works best for me.
