What the hell is it?
I guess it's a cool way to see if someone updated their Facebook, Twitter, Flikr etc. without having to visit those sites. Anything else?
It's essentially google's answer to social networking. Beware though, when you initially sign up, it pulls from your contacts list directly, so everyone in your network will know who you email and google message the most, etc.
It freaked me out by linking Picasa automatically.

It's Google's proof that they are much better in doing search than social stuff 
While it's essentially good idea under the hood, it's too confusing for the common user used to FaceBook. beside that, it thinks that we want all the people who sent us an email once to be our friends on a social network.
Speaking about social networkd, my hopes are with Diaspora. Unlike all the others, it's opensourced and centralized, thus giving the users full control over the content. But we'll have to wait till September to see it.

I read about that, but last I heard they raised a mess of funds, but haven't started writing any code yet.

It confuses me. I have it now, but have really no idea what its purpose is.
