Going a little overboard with the 3D, aren't we?
I forgot how this 3D fad started up again, but there is ONE thing that's cool. A freakin' NINTENDO 3DS!!
The main reason I'm excited is that they're re-releasing Ocarina of Time on this console in 3D!! I can only imagine the extra features, like they did with Mario 64 DS. Here's a list of around 60 confirmed games, which includes Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, a new Mario Kart, Driver, Madden, and some other goodies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games
Sorry if someone's already done a thread on this, but I've never been this excited about a gaming console.

I've noticed it. The idea is that 3D didn't boom until less than a year ago, I think, and it stuck to movies that like to show off their FX. But now it's moved into gaming... which is probably where it should've started and where it should've stayed. What I'm diggin' about the 3DS is no glasses necessary. That's what pisses me off about 3D movies. I have to adjust my eyesight to the freakin' glasses!
I have no video game console. My DS is broken, and my Wii is back home with only 3 games. I'm only excited about the Nintendo 64 nostalgia I'll get from this new 3DS, back in the days when I didn't have a care in the world beyond what was in 64-bit.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
BTW - I know I'm late on this discussion but all the 3D movies are to try and convert the people that burn movies at home (illegal downloaders) into paying customers at the theater
I haven't bothered seeing any of these new 3D movies. Are they really that much better than the shitty 50's 3D movies? I mean, sure they're more elaborate and all but is the 3D really that spectacular? Are people 30 years from going to be going "They thought that was 3D? What a bunch of maroons!"
O.o Cool. Where did you hear this?
Si vis pacem, para bellum
aren't 3D TVs starting to catch on at home though?
3D TVs at the moment suck, and no DVD/Bluray can come close to the quality of the theaters. So at the moment, buying anything 3D for your home entreatment center is idiotic. Personally the 3DS doesn't interest me in the least, releasing game after game isn't new and inventive, look now you can play Ocarina of Time, now with built in headache. Nintendo is lazy, and only produces crap at the moment.

If Nintendo's lazy why are they making more money than the X-Box 360 or PS3/PSP?
Because people are idiots. And sure they're making money now, but how successful will Wii 2.0 be? Everybody and their grandma owns a Wii, do they want to spend $200 on a new one with a couple of bells and whistles. They ignored their hardcore audience and now they're playing catch up, but only with their flagship titles (Mario, Zelda, Metriod) which don't interest me in the least, forcing me to look to third party titles for original games, and the majority of games for the Wii suck. Nintendo has just dug themselves a hole nearly impossible to get out. Ten years from now they could be completely reliant on the handheld market, and than again Apple is not something they can ignore.

Yeah I am a firm believer that they already have WII 5.0 and up mapped out as well as PS3456 @7 and 360, 380 and so forth. They just slowly release the crap to us in slow doses of technology so they can make more money when tey actually have plans for much better platforms already.

I found an interesting video on why Sony may be more lucky than talented. This guy has very interesting views on the politics of video games.

Read an article, apparently the processing power of the 3DS is so good if it wasn't a 3D device the graphics in their games could be of a much much higher standard. That's how you know they're going too far with 3D, they're sacrificing a revolution in handheld gaming for a gimmick.

Riiiight, because we all know that better graphics equal better games.

Sorry, got two minutes into that video and could already tell that guys an idiot. He viewing business as a stable, he's using the past to look into the future (which he kind lambasted.) The Wii is eventually, and sooner then later, reach a saturation point, and no one will buy one since every one will have one. The simple fact is Sony has one thing neither Nintendo, every did, or Microsoft ever tried to do; a large first and second party game developers. The majority of good exclusive games for Nintendo systems and developed internally at Nintendo(besides Metriod, which is second), which is a dated business model when the games were the systems. They rely on third party exclusives beyond their first, with third party exclusives becoming non-existent, just look the Capcom five. Micorsoft hasn't even tried, not a single first party title has ever been developed by them, only having second, lets see what that got them. It got them Halo, and Bungie, but Bungie jumped ship to Activision, and they keep Halo, now being developed by the untested 343 Industries. They had Mass Effect, but gave publishing to EA, now thats coming to the PS3, losing that series. It looks like they only exclusive is Gears of War, and Epic has proven not to develop exclusively for the 360. And lets face it, the only reason the 360 has as many exclusives as it does now is because its so damn easy to port PC games to that system. Sony has however has a first and second party backing that is too numerous to list here. But even though the PS3 had an underwhelming launch, and the PSP underperformed, Sony isn't lucky, they're huge. One of their business model is to use up and coming development studios to develop titles often branching off of established brands or fund the development of an original ip and if the title is successful they get them to develop more titles and then buy them out, but leave the development team intact, such as with Ready at Dawn and Media Molecule. And lets face it, Sony is going to have a laugh when Microsoft and Nintendo have Bluray players on their system. Now I'll stop now before I go into Bluray, their avoidance of Apple, or just how huge they are.
(Did I really just wright all that?)

And 3D does equal better games? 3D doesn't make better movies, I doubt it's going to make better games. Unless they integrate the 3D in as a gameplay element rather than a visual effect, which they have yet to do.

all i wanna know is, when is Allan Wake going to be on my PS3?
its all just a marketing gimmic

I JUST said it graphics don't matter. If it's awesome, why care if it's 3D?
I think better graphics do make better games though. To render and design high quality textures takes time and I have a great deal of respect for game designers and that whole business in general, so to see a lot of time and detail go in to something that looks as real as it can be, to me there is nothing better.
I'd prefer a 3DS with better graphics than this 3D stuff. I'm not complaining anyway, I just know it could be better. Nintendo has a history of innovation and this 3DS thing is Nintendo breaking that pattern with this device that just jumps on the latest gaming bandwagon, as Microsoft and Sony are doing this year with their motion sensing controllers 4 years late to a party that Nintendo started.

Yeah well a good old game of Stratego beats them all. And its in 3D

The 3DS was announced after the fact Sony announced 3D TVs were in development, and that they'll release a patch to make the PS3 3D.

wouldn't you think though that this thing will eventually lead to them doing all the graphics and texture thing with 3D down the road?
It's just the starting point. Same with that ipad thing, sure, it's a novelty now, but as more people figure out what the hell to do with it, it's going to become pretty damn amazing.
Nintendo has a solid demographic. The best games out there are Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games. Seriously, they're THE best. They're solidified into an almost guaranteed great experience, and players know that. Nintendo isn't going down anytime soon. They've got the best teams. They're just more family-oriented, and I don't know why the "hardcore" audience begs for blood and graphics over gameplay. Nintendo is innovative and reliable. That's all that matters.
I do prefer graphics over 3D, but gameplay beats all. The best games I've ever played were for the Gameboy Advance.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Sorry but Nintendo isn't as good a footing as some would like to think. No Zelda game has even came close to competing. against Ocarina of Time. Metriod is best when it's 2D, the prime series is just boring (haven't played Other M yet so I'm judging it just yet), the best Metriod game since SNES days has been Shadow Complex. And Mario, is like Metriod, best when it's 2D, but for me, noting captures playing Mario than when it's black and white and on the old brick model Gameboy (the best Gameboy of all time.) Nintendo time has past, they have been eclipsed. And none of their teams have anything on Sucker Punch, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Ready at Dawn, Eat Sleep Play, Santa Monica, etc., etc.. Even if you can some how declare Nintendo have better development teams, Sony can beat them on Numbers alone, once you bring talent into it, it's blown out of the park. Nintendo can't survive with it's current business model.

Your opinion on these games pretty much means nothing compared to the ratings given by the majority of reviewers. Mario Galaxy 2 was rated as the best game on the Wii. Zelda games are selling better than ever. Metroid, meh, not at its best but still with a solid fanbase. If you HONESTLY believe Nintendo is circling the crapper, you're quite mistaken. Shit-game factories produce a lot of crap that sell through advertising alone, with a winner sometimes popping up then dying again through crappy sequels. That's not a good model. Nintendo still has the numbers on its side with its top selling games out selling the top sellers of PS3 and Xbox 360. I don't know where you're making your research.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
I'm not saying they are circling the crapper, but that within the next ten years they could easily be. I don't have faith that a Wii 2.0 will sell, and Apple is proven stiff competition for the handheld market that could go in either one, with Apple edging out in their favor due to multimedia nature for their products. The PSP has a dedicated hardcore fanbase which isn't going anywhere, that is in fact, only growing. Nintendo is stable for now, but where are they going from here?

They're proving to be extremely innovative in the handheld realm. They're still ahead of the game, and can only keep going. I guarantee their new console will sell huge. I don't know what new features they'll bring out, but you know it'll be something big and different. They know gameplay, far better than anyone. Halo is their biggest threat, and it still didn't sell even half of what the top selling Wii game sold. Zelda and Mario have bigger fanbases. Yeah, they're not growing as much, but they ARE veterans that have pretty much dominated the gaming world for years. Of course they're gonna slow down, but it's not like the people buying games from different companies aren't going to keep going back to Nintendo.
Si vis pacem, para bellum
Yeah, so new and innovative by releasing generation old technologies and selling it as new, and may I remind you the PS3 had motion controls at launch. And how exactly is Halo their biggest threat? Bungie left Microsoft, for all we know thy could be developing a game for the Wii. The simple fact is that Nintendo has put their eggs in only two, three baskets, and if one fails, it'll be a major loss. Microsoft is only still here because they were really lucky. Sony has their fingers in pretty much everyones pie, so even though they'll have no great show stopper to blow the competition out of the water, anything short of godzilla destroying their headquarters (and the ones in London, Toronto, and Los Angeles, not just Tokyo) they're not going to fail anytime soon.

Yes. The new movies that I have seen in 3d are amazing. I was expecting the 1970's type Jaws style anti-climatic shit, but the kids and I kept putting our hands up involuntarily to keep stuff from hitting us. How to Train Your Dragon was the best, imfo.
Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
Anyone remember Captain EO? They pioneered this type of stuff.

Nobody said Sony was going to fall. Why are you assuming one or the other is going to drown?? Dude, NINTENDO WILL BE THE LAST TO DROWN. Sony has other products besides games and consoles. Of course they'll survive. I have a Sony TV. The question is will their gaming hardware overshadow Nintendo? Hell no. As fast as they're growing, they're peaking. They haven't even touched Nintendo's success as a gaming company, and they never will. Nintendo always gives quality innovation. Yes, it's innovative to release a handheld that can look 3D without any eyewear. Yes, their games are always reliably good.
The point is these companies each have their own audience, and Nintendo's proven to be completely solid with its own. I guarantee it.
