Okay,

This is driving me nuts. I got a piece of Spyware on my computer that just won't go away. I picked it up about 2 days ago. And since then, I've run the newest version of Ad-Aware (SE 2.0), the new version of Spybot Search & Destroy. I've even run HijackThis and followed in-depth messageboard procedures from technicians to remove it. But it's still popping up. Every friggin' minute.

And even though I have a Pop-Up Stopper on, this thing triggers it so much, that it adds like a half second delay to my every browser action.

Can anyone recommend any other ways to get rid of this thing?

It's called "Enhance My Search".

Asked someone I know about this, here was their answer:

http://www.winguides.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=brdSpyware&Number=126186&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&part=

Also you can read this and follow removal steps exactly, it runs off your start up config so removing it is impossible unless you disable startup options.

Here's the steps:

I hope it helps.

I want to give this a try. My PC got some adware up the wazoo last year and I got rid of most of it, but a few things still linger in my PC. This would've been much easier instead of going through my WINDOWS and PROGRAM FILES folders and manually deleting any program created or edited around the time my PC got infected.

Actually, I'm new to the name of Firefox. Is its main appeal the block of pop-ups, or is there more to it?

Can you say:
I can have many many windows (or tabs) on the same window?
also faster?

The only bug or error i get, is that my favorites for some reason disappear randomly in a few weeks, but since this thing has a bookmarks manager i get them back no problem. (Also it imports from other browsers as well.)

It is really a must for Forum Fanatics, who want to read 6 or 7 posts at the same time in a single window (by switching tabs)

granted there are others who have this as well (and you can even switch the preference of the tabs).

but all around this is the best one.

Also for spyware i use:

housecall.trendmicro.com

or the Yahoo! Anti-spy

i have it installed in Internet Explorer and it removes the adware globaly, so i don't have to see it on my current browser.

A computer geek friend of mine told me this recently (I'm paraphrasing):

An unprotected Windows XP system lasts an average of 18 minutes when connected to the internet. Then, it's toast. A Mac, on the other hand, is almost impossibly to hack into, and experienced hackers were offered a ton of money if they could. They couldn't.

So spyware on your Mac? I don't think so. As far as this guy goes, he says there are almost no viruses or spyware for Macs, compared to the millions for PCs. He tends to know his stuff, and although I'm not a computer guy, and I'll admit he's not infallible, I plan on selling my laptop and buying an iBook.

Hey guys,

Since you were all so helpful with my little Spyware dilemma, I feel I owe you a pretty thorough explanation of how I came to fix and understand this problem.

In the time it took me to grow impatient waiting for replies to my initial post (2 mins)... I discovered an insanely helpful resource on the web called TechSupportForum.com. (www.techsupportforum). It's a VBulletin forum like ours, and signing up is free and easy. And dude, these guys are friggin' thorough. Just take a look at how well laid out their forum is and how in-depth all their answers are. It's just a bunch of talented Techies banding together to help people with common and complicated issues.

Anyway, I was told to download a program called HiJackThis. (latest download version is: http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/HijackThis.exe)

Boy, do I recommend this program. It scans your computer's logs (registry, startup configs, etc) and lists all the software currently running. (forget Windows Task Manager, this is way more accurate).

Anyway, you'll also want to run the latest versions of all the usual suspect programs, such as Ad-Aware Personal 2.0, Spybot Search and Destroy, and a kick-ass program called CleanUp, which searches out every Temp file on your harddrive and gets rid of it. (ever since finding this program, I run it about twice a day).

Then, you open Hijack This and do a scan and save a log file. TechSupportForum then has a portion of their forums dedicated specifically to this, where you post your entire log and they tell you what to Remove and what not to. And of course, they urge you to follow all the proper steps and run in Safe Mode.

Turns out, as clean as I thought I was, I had about 7 programs worth of Spyware running on my computer that Ad-Aware and Spybot weren't finding! They even told me how to reconfigure my Ad-Aware settings to be more thorough in my scans.

Finally, after a few back and forths, they declared my computer clean. (for now)

Now, I only use Firefox (thanks, Minuet! That lead you gave me about the two creators of FF being on Wired.com this month pointed me in the right direction. I read the entire article and have converted... not once looking back to Explorer).

I also do the CleanUp's everyday to get rid of all those Temp files that build up so quickly on a computer.

Another cool program they suggested, which I use now is RegCleaner. I don't have a link for the install, but what this program does is scan your computer and then list your Software's registry locations, msconfig start-up items, items that are supposed to be uninstalled and more. Because I was shocked that, programs that I had long since uninstalled, like Kazaa and AudioGalazy, were still showing up as locations in my Start-Up items tab on msconfig. I had them all disabled of course, but it pissed me off that they were still listed in there. The OCD freak in me wanted them gone!!!

Also, ever have one of those rookie experiences on a computer where you accidentally delete a programs File Folder before Uninstalling it the proper way? And then your Add/Remove Programs list in Control Panel forever shows that program listed, even though it's no longer on your computer? And everytime you try to uninstall it, it won't let you since the uninstall file is now gone? (for me, it was a mod on Rainbow Six: Urban Operations)

Well RegClean solves that problem too and removes all traces of it. So I highly recommend this little program.

Hope this explanation helps anyone else having similar problems.

I heard on The Screen Savers that Lavasoft made some sort of deal with a company that makes spyware wherein Lavasoft gets paid to essentially allow those programs to be invisible to their programs.

They're denying it of course.

I have no idea what I just did, lol, but I followed your instructions to a "t". Thanks! Hope it speeds things up.

ps
Any idea how I can get in that "clicking" sound when I click a link on a page? IE had this feature and I miss it on FireFox.

Nah, I've already combed through the Preferences. It's definitely not an option there. And I've been to some of the Mozilla plug-in sites and I don't see anything close there either.

And that freshmest.org link doesn't work. Sad

Aw damn, you know thats one thing i liked about FF, was not having the sound. For some reason when Im sitting in a dark, empty room, with all that is silent except for the IE click, made me feel extra-perverted, hahaha! That gets a big `whattheshit?!` from me. Have no idea why it gave me that feeling.

Here is an extention to install

close out and re-open FF.
Go to tools > extensions > sound extension > options > content-loadstart

Weeee!

Lol. Okay, so at first I was thrilled that you so quickly knew where to find this extension. But it turns out, the first download on that link you provide is for Firefox versions earlier than 1.0. And so I downloaded the newer version below, which they describe as "A repackaged version with bumped maxVersion". And dude... this ain't a click. It's a friggin' audio assualt on my senses. Lol. I jump in my chair everytime I click a link now.

Is there anyway I can point the Options to just open up whatever wav. file IE used for that sound?

Nevermind, I got it! I just Searched for all wav. sounds on my harddrive and then spotted all the default Windows XP sounds in my C:\Windows\Media\ folder and then used the Sound Options to browse to that sound.

Thanks! Any other cool ones you can suggest?

Cool!
Sadly, I dont really get into all the extra crap they give, like toolbars and stuff.
Buuuuuut..some of the extensions are pretty neat. Like the enhanced history mngr, the disable targets feature. Mostly, Ive just gone with what it gives me and added some minor tweeks to it. i should really check out what else they have, but Im afraid of the bugs and shit, adding too much makes the browser buggy, therefor not as enjoyable. If i were you go with the Editors picks, which there are none in there....so, I dont know if that means anything, but if FF doesnt make it, I dont use anything other people make until FF says they like it, and then they make it better.

FF is awesome, huh? Smile I Lub it

something that i find fucking awesome is when you hit CNTRL+F
it brings up a search box at the bottom of the browser, and you type whatever youre looking for in a page with lots of words. like say youre looking up something for reference, you need only one sentence in a slew of too many for want to read through....this feature works perfectly for finding it without too much effort. Smile
