Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

Meh. After Demon's Souls any dark fantasy action RPG just can't compare.

I'm interested if it isn't first-person.

I love fantasy games, but I hate first-person fantasy games. Working a sword without real depth perception ruined Oblivion for me.

You could play in third-person in Oblivion.

Yeah, but it looked all retarded and suffered "you should be playing this in first person" just like the last 2 Fall Out games.

about time. after the massive disappointments of new vegas and alpha protocol, ive been hurting for something immersive and longer than alan wake.

by the way, if you havent played it yet, alan wake is one of the best 360 games... ever...

Bethesda didn't develop New Vegas or Alpha Protocol. That was Obsidian.

And did you like Fallout 3? I don't know how you could hate New Vegas if you liked Fallout 3 because New Vegas is superior in almost every way.

vegas was full of bugs.

and i know they didnt make AP. but it was touted as oblivion for espionage, and it was really more like splinter cell on rails for the ps2. it was garbage. so since then (and since i effectively couldnt play vegas) my epic game boner has been neglected.

They released a patch to fix most of the bugs for New Vegas. For the PS3 at least.

I rented Fallout New Vegas a few days after release, and maybe a couple of glitches? Everyone complained it was just like Fallout 3, to me thats fantastic. Loved that game, although the main quest isn't as interesting or emersing.

And the new Elder Scrolls is enough to neglect going out and stay in to play...

Ripped this from a thread on another forum. It's a bunch of gameplay facts scrapped together from the GameInformer article.

You don't pick which skills are important to you in the beginning.
The higher the skill, the more it contributes to leveling.
Each level comes with an automatic boost in health (it doesn't say if it's based on something) and then a choice to raise your health, stamina or magicka.
You get to pick a perk on each level-up. (it says there are many of them)
In the beginning you level up faster.
A quest involving two trader brothers in an argument about a stolen artifact. Discounts after quest completion.
This seems to tie in to "if you murder the shopkeeper, his sister will automatically inherit the shop, and might offer you the same quest".
If you drop objects in towns, there is a chance that someone will pick it up and ask you about it or NPCs might fight for it.
Quest to save a woman's daughter from kidnappers. This will tie-in with a dynamic quest system, in which the game looks for dungeons you never explored and sets the quest
in one of them.
You can sprint by expending stamina.
No mentions about attributes, apart from health, magicka, stamina.
No more zoom in conversations, NPCs will do something while talking to you.
Similar system to Oblivion, where you hear a conversation and a quest or location is added.
Farming, mining, woodcutting, cooking seem to be in - not specified to which extent.
18 skills
Level scaling is similar to Fallout 3 style, not Oblivion.
"Gone is restrictive class system"
Five schools of magic - no more Mysticism, its spells were distributed to other schools.

- Combat

Fighting remains true to the core action tenets of previous entries while streamlining weapon and ability usage. (says TH)
Every weapon and spell can be equipped to either hand at any time. Dual wield two of the same weapons or the same spell.
New finishing moves, unique to each weapon and target.
Bows take more to draw but are more powerful.
Backpedaling in combat should be inefficient, slower speed for moving back.
It seems you can create weapons.

- Graphics, Interface

Faces look very natural in the GI article, more distinctions between races.
No mention of PC-specific interface or at least modifications.
Chose if you want HUD in first person.
Snow not a predefined texture, but falling naturally based on object shape.
Trees and branches move independently with the wind.

- Locations, Characters

Riverwood - small logging community.
An area called the Reach, rocky and craggy, in the western end of Skyrim.
Five massive cities.
Esbern - one of the few surviving blades, a mentor for the hero. Voiced by Max von Sydow.
Alduin - also called the World Eater, a massive dragon foretold by the Elder scrolls. Of course, he's upset at Tamriel.

- Story, Misc

More voice actors than Oblivion.
Citizens of Skyrim turning against each other in civil war as the game begins and lesser dragons already flying across the world.
You are the last of the Dragonborn.
Dragons will be regular threats in the game world. They will fly into battle at unexpected times.
Children do exist.
Confirmed creatures: zombies, skeletons, trolls, giants, ice wraiths, giant spiders, dragons, wolves, horses, elk, mammoth, saber-toothed cats.

it looks great; as for new vegas, i love it. not too many bugs, and besides, a friend of mine and i refer to it as Bethesda approvsl. all of their games are glitch-fests, and yet that's half the fun! duplicating in oblivion made it awesome; falling through the floor in fallout is cool, and it's like the Nintendo seal of approval: if the mane's on it, you know what you're getting.
i love alan wake with a passion and have read (and written) many a theories and really hope for a sequel.
skyrimm looks fantastic; i remember they copyrighted the name right after oblivion came out. pretty funny.

I don't plan on playing this game but I like this thread because it let me know that Max Von Sydow is still alive. For the moment.

I'm looking forward to Skyrim more than any other game. I'm replaying Oblivion just to get myself back in an Elder Scrolls frame of mind.

I want this game inside me.

I have a feeling that much like with oblivion, Bethseda is going to rekindle my gaming mojo when this badass comes out.

It stands to be the first game I have bought since modern warfare 2. Roll on the end of the year.

Some great rumours posted above. Particularly the proposed changes to combat (back peddling being nerfed) and more voice actors. These were two things that annoyed me in oblivion.
