DSL Internet Question
here's the situation: we have dsl that uses a phoneline. my mother wants to cut costs by just using cellphones and getting rid of the phones. so, do I need phone service to make the internet work?
just tell me if Im not making sense.

Why dont you ask your provider?

Is getting Cable not a option?
DSL is shit anyways.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.
We're on DSL because we don't watch TV enough to justify cable. Your local company should have a cheap, local only plan (ours is 18 bucks after all of the taxes). You get this and then DSL is pretty cheap on top of that, depending on the promo you can find. Remind your mom that cops can't trace 911 calls made from cell phones, no matter what movies tell you. It's always good to have a land line.

Or you can just tell the operater where you are.

not if you are being held hostage and using one hand to slyly make the call because you are tied up and gagged.....

cable internet is where it's at. the big issue I had with it back home was when it stormed, but other than that it rarely gave me problems. The University LAN that I'm on right now tends to be pretty screwy

DSl runs on a different line but through the phone line, it's a trip and i dont understand it..
i have never found a way to use dsl and not have a phone. if that was an option, wed have done it long ago.
switching is something we find ourselves doing every year, it seems.. last year we got rid of cable internet cause having digital cable and a phone line started running us 130 smacks a month, plus we had a phone line with sbc that ran another $25.. fuck that. we went down to basic and used our phone line for our internet. we saved, overall, 70 bucks a month, about half the cost.
as of last month, the cable bill had crept up from $29 plus taxes to $55. all legit, they stood by it. we cancelled out of that and figured to go with dish or direct, but we are covered, oak trees everywhere. no line of sight, no tv for the woman. cable offered us a promotion for a full year to get us back, cable tv phone and internet for 99 a month. so were in the process of canceling our phone and keeping the number through digital voice, a hundred crumbs a month for digital tv phone and internet. and next year, we'll switch again ... wish this wasnt always such a fruit loop pain in the ass, it's about as elegant as a one legged whore sprinting from the poe-poe .

That's where the 2nd Amendment comes in.

Yes, you need a number, and I believe DSL makes a local call when it connects. So you need some sort of service, but I guess you can get the most basic there is.
