Breaking news for PS3 owners
In case you haven't been paying much attention to why you can't get onto PSN the last few days it is because it was hacked. And to make it better, potentially all user data was compromised. Including your password and Credit Card info.
So, just a heads up, you might want to change your passwords and keep an eye on CC charges.

Just a friendly public service announcement.
Was it the group Anonymous that did this? I've talked to a guy about this, but he's usually full of shit when it comes to details.
I finally have a winning argument for having an xbox besides - But we have Halo and Gears of War!
Haven't noticed its been down since I've mostly been on my 360 the last few days.
How do you change your password on your PSN account?

we're they're not claiming responsibility for this one.
And I think Sony just officially lost the console war.

Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.
If I would have made this thread I would have titled it "Attn PSN users: YOUR SHIT'S BEEN COMPROMISED!"

How do you change your password on your PSN account?
You can't, until PSN is back up. Which is still in "unknown" status. Today is day 6 of it being down, and it sounded like they are gunning to have it back up within a week.
But at the end, you have to wonder if it really solves any problems because the PS3 has gapping security holes now.
These people were pissed off enough, they were bound to find a way in. I cannot understand why this is being blamed only on Sony. Yes, Sony screwed some people on their paid accounts, and it's understandable that they got pissed. But get together and go to Sony with your problem, don't take it out on the PSN users who did nothing wrong.

It's being blamed on Sony because most of the steps that have led to the system being compromised are things that could have been avoided relatively easily. Yet for some reason, Sony decided to go easy on protecting their user's data.
Even though the hackers are the ultimate source of the blame, Sony deserves to take the bulk of the criticism for not putting proper measures in place.
Oddly enough, the Wii is a more secure platform than PS3.
Sony actually had a contest asking people to hack their system when they first put it out so that they could try to tighten their security. I feel like that's pretty damn bold and smart on their part, and no, it didn't keep this from happening, but there are some hella determined pissed off people out there.

You guys keep saying they're pissed off and that's why they hacked the system. Why are they pissed off?
And who are "they"?

From what I've heard, it's a group of people from 4-chan, but that could be incorrect. Basically, it's a community of hackers who paid for a Playstation Plus account in December (or somewhere close to the end of last year) and when the new year started, the account was no longer valid. That was considered their year's worth of Playstation Plus benefits.

Also, this is hearsay. I don't think Sony is planning to tell the entire story.

Whatever has actually gone on here, it's been going on for way too long. Sony need to get their shit together and get the network back up, at least enough for people to change their passwords.
I definitely agree with that.

Based on what I am seeing, the actual chain of events isn't really as you describe. In fact, 4-chan has said they did not sanction the attack.
The events, as I have followed them
- Sony removed Linux from PS3. Got hackers angry.
- Hackers completely broke the PS3 security to it's lowest level. Meaning, that they were able to get Sony's private security key, so they can now sign code as being official Sony code. A private key, by the way, should also be randomized. Sony didn't.
- Sony filed a suit against Geohot, the hacker who announced and showed how they hacked the PS3
- 4-chan had an attack a few weeks back as pay-back for the lawsuit. This was the first time PSN went down recently
- The most recent 'attack' might not even really be an 'attack'. Basically, they flashed the firmware in PS3s to appear to be dev-kits, which is what game developers get from sony to test code on.
- After logging onto the network with fake dev-kits they were able to openly pirate everything off the PSN store. By adding fake money to their accounts.
- With additional hacking they were able to get user info from PSN, while masquerading as developers.
Now ask yourself. Why would developers have access to your personal information if Sony had created a properly secure system? Another interesting question: Why is Sony saving all your user data on publicly accessible networks? Typically, data like that is stored on a separate network when dealing with data the way Sony does. Again, a total failure to properly secure user info.
Bullet point 2 is really the most interesting in this whole ordeal. You see, gaming systems have multiple levels of security to make sure you can't play pirated games easily. This is a lot like when people Jailbreak an iPhone. You can get around it, but then all they need to do is push out an update that makes your old hacks no longer usable.
Where this is different is, after getting the private key that Sony uses, they were able to now get around the very first bit of security that happens when you turn on a PS3. As a result, they can also circumvent every other security measure. The sad/funny thing here is, there is literally NOTHING Sony can do about it. Because, their private key was obtained and not randomized. At this point the only way Sony can actually fix that would be for them to brick every single PS3 that has been made as well as every game printed. Because, since the hackers now have the private key, they can write their own code and sign it with Sony's key. Thus, there is no way for your PS3 to know the code/game isn't legit.
It won't be long before you start hearing about viruses on PS3 because of this. It is also why a lot of online games, like COD have been going to hell on PS3. They can run modified versions of the game to cheat and grief people.
Microsoft for instance, planned for stuff like this. They actually have "efuses" in the 360 processor. When they push out a software update a transistor in your processor is literally damaged. So when they put out system updates all they have to do is tell the system to not allow consoles to connect if each fuses isn't blown. It's also why you can't "roll-back" system updates on 360. Once you update, you're done.
If you're interested in the technical side of this stuff, watch this video. It is the breakdown/announcement of how they cracked the PS3 open. Surprisingly interesting.

My boss told me that even if the hackers get caught, they'll probably just get a slap on the wrist and get recruited by the NSA. Apparently that's what happens to a lot of big time hackers.

Sounds like it's more of what happens in movies, but it's hardly a bad thing if it really does happen. Easy rehabilitation as well as strengthening the infrastructure of the law force. Or intelligence force, as the case may be.
Also, if the hackers hacked PSN because Sony disabled different OSes on the PS3, I doubt they'll actually do something with the account information they have. It seems more like a threat to Sony, "We can fuck your shit up"-style.
And sometimes you get to work with Bruce Willis because he don't know shit about computers.
This makes me regret buying a PS3, maybe I'll just sell the damn thing before the whole system goes to shit.

Don't regret it! Stay tuned for the Class Action Suit that will probably emerge from all of this. Even though it will probably be $10-30 at the most for each of us.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
Good luck with that.
I imagine it will be like trying to sell a pc that is advertised as coming with "Viruses and Trojan Horses Pre-Installed!" as a feature.

Also the xbox got the way it is because of the Halo retards. They hacked Halo 2 in all ways imaginable. So much hacking is the reason why XBL is strong. Sony didn't have that, or cared to build something like that.
but then again PSN has been a tacked on service from the go, and the only reason it was free was to basically enable them to be crappy while still having an install base that would wait for years in development of a proper structure.
but the xbox isn't invulnerable. Major Nelson got hacked last year, and hackers used Password retrieval exploits in the websites to hack accounts. You can still by all means pay a hacker to hack an specific account at any time.
But it's way different with what's happening with PSN and the massive data that has been stolen.
So...We are still going to die. Right?

I like how they haven't been allowed to turn it back on in Japan because the government doesn't trust them.
The "Welcome Back" program is up but it's really buggy. You go and get your free game and an error message comes up and the option disappears.
Fucking Sony...

huh. so does that mean the store is back up now too?
Kind of.
I tried downloading a bit of DLC for MAG yesterday and it never downloaded.
Right now I can't even access the store or manage my account.
This is why I'm glad I have a 360 as well.

You pretty much just have to ignore the error message and be persistent about it. And if the free games you are trying to get aren't showing up, follow these instructions: XMB>PlayStation Network>Account Management>Transaction Management>Services List>SCEA Promotions. It's obnoxious, yes, but it eventually works. Plus, you have to take into account that EVERYbody is trying to do this shit at once.

Plus, you have to take into account that it is PS3.

well shit.
