Best "In-Ear" phones
OK...so I've had about four pairs of Sony Fontopia in the last six years. I love them, but it's getting ridiculous.
My latest pair have just died.
They're just so damn flimsy. And I can't count the number of times I've crawled on the floor looking for those little black buds.
Anyway - any of you folk have good suggestions for sweet earphones?
Yeh - that's the kind of thing I like. The Fontopia were the same kind of design.
Do you find them pretty robust? I need something durable to save me forking out every 12 months....or maybe I'm just a cack-handed bastard!
I'm tempted to really splash out and take care of a pair of these mothers...

Man - I just bought one!
I will be bluntly, unashamedly honest here: I fucking love it.
It's my first apple product (I've only had low-mem MP3 players before) and it's superb. I'm sure the techies and purists will bludgeon me to death with my own laptop, but I'd go as far as to say it's my favourite piece of equipment.
I'd even take it over pants, socks and bedding.
It is, however, ruining the fabric of society.

i've had loads of pairs of those headphones with the black bits and always lost the black rubber attatchments. those particular headphones though i lost attatched to a minidisc player after four months good service. they were sturdy motherfuckers by comparison to other ones.

i figure it was a good investment. i have been looking into those wirless LAN recepters that connect to your home stereo receiver, but everything is shit that comes out. so w/ the ipod and itrip, not only do i get all my music from my computer on my bedroom stereo, but also on my car stereo and bathroom boombox. and wherever else.
EDIT: that sounds more like something i should have posted on amazon...i'm such a loser.

Holy shit! I didn't even know about this feature. I've been so blinkered to the ways of the iPod.
How much do these cost? I take it they can be used on anything that receives fm?
My husband has this thing that's a cassette tape that you plug into your ipod and you can play your ipod music on tape players.

You're married - when the McGuffin did that happen?
Anyway - I've seen that cassette thing, which is pretty handy. Annoyingly though, my car doesn't have a tape deck, so this transmitter thing sounds bueno

Nah I'm not married. Just wanted to try it on for a minute, seemed natural enough to me.
I saw these stickers that you put on your ipod mini, they had a polynesian print!! But now that I have my ipod I can't find them anywhere!
if you look on amazon and search "ipod fm transmitter" you'll have a couple of different things to look at. the itrip works on all fm radios, for it to work perfectly you need to have a station that is pure static.
there are fm transmitter made specifically for cars that plug into the cig lighter and will charge the ipod while your listening to it. but it only works in cars.
as far as getting static, at home i plan to just remove the antenna. in the car however, depending where i am i might be getting interference.
edit: removing the antenna at home isn't an option, the transmitter needs it there to do its thing.
What about these? Polynesian-esque

Sounds cool, but goddammit I can see it being a problem in London and thereabouts. Every snippet of bandwave is used by a pirate station or a "Golden Oldies" etc etc
Very tempted though.
Did you get the Nano, or the real deal?
i got the 30 GB. i want to be able to hold all my music, and th 20 would have more than half full on the first day. i didn't go nuts with the 60 because by the time i fill that thing, they'll have something better out and it would probably be pretty worn by then and time for upgrade.
there are other options for playing through home/ car stereos that aren't wirless and therefore wouldn't be effected by the radio stations. just make sure the stereo you want to connect to has the right connections

Too too awes. But I still can't decide whether I want to bastardise my Hula Girl.
So these were the type you had?

You arent gonna get much better than that for the price.

Yeh - and I totally agree. The sound quality is excellent and the price is great -
But, they are seriously, seriously, flimsy. I'm on my fourth pair, so it's working out at around £30 every year, instead of a nice pair that lasts for a few years (there's a 3-year warranty on a more expensive pair I found).
It's not even like I treat them as skipping rope - the last pair just suddenly stopped working in the right phone while I was sitting at the computer. Judging by the hundreds of similar stories on Amazon, I'm not the only one.
It's a shame, because I really love these phones, but I'm fed up of having them conk out on me when I'm about to launch into the Mama Mia bit in Bohemian Rhapsody
By the way, for the reference of anyone who wants to invest in a decent pair of canal-phones (I'm down with lingo).
From personal experience, do NOT get these:
http://www.shurestore.com/earphones/eseries_e3c.html#tech
They have no bass, although crystal clear high-end. You'll spend ages trying to find which one of the 8 different types of adapter creates the perfect seal in your ear. They're a pain in the ass. I sent mine back.
Here's what I now own, and I love them:
http://www.ultimateears.com/superfi/item__view_item__prod-979.html
The bass is rich, but the high end is a fuck load better that the Sony MDs. I'd still recommend the Sony's as a great budget earphone, I was just fed up of replacing them every few months. We'll see how well these last.
Woop!
This is great advice. I have the Dell pockcet DJ, which I love , holds 2500 songs, and was only $180. My complaint is the Dell earphone hurt my ears. I have some Sony earphone that hook around my ear for when I go running, but the sound is weak. The Deel phones sound is okay but they seriously hurt my ears to put in. Which ones of these have been to most comfortable for you guys?
I find in-ear (canal) phones really comfortable, once you get the right size.
If you're looking for a good budget pair, then the aforementioned Sonys are a great bet (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008XYJL/ref=pd_sim_ce_dp_1/202-6848713-0310241)
though for a few more quid the Sennheisers kick ass too (I can't find a link for them. They may have been discontinued, but they're a great pair of value ear-buds.)
I don't regret pushing the budget to get the good ones. The sound is noticably better and (hopefully) they'll be more durable to boot.
Screw the "in-ear" phones! [Say this with your best Sir Mixalot voice = I like big headphones...]

I'm not familiar with uk retailers, but I will recommend this online vendor based out of nyc; Turntable Lab. Use the down-arrow under equipment and gear, and select headphones. great selection, decent prices, and good reviews.
what cool ones have you seen?
There is a thread in aural pleasure called "plug them in," that's all about headphones. But for all the non-group members, I'll post my answer here as well. Perhaps, the coolest headphones I've seen are my camo headphones. (Hell Yeah! I like to be materialistic over my set).

this site has some cool headphones as well, but I've never shopped from them so I can't vouch for them.

Hey, Picked up those Sony phones, they are prettty friggin sweet. I can only guess what the sennheisers are like. Thanks for the advice.

No worries dude - just don't ruin them by listening to Nickelback
I had a pair of the the Sony EX51 earbuds, which I liked pretty well, until the covering over the cord started to disintegrate (no shit--literally turned into gummy rubber and peeled off, and this was with normal everyday use). Bought a pair of Shure e4c's on eBay for ~$180 (after a few beers, that seemed like a perfectly logical idea). Glad I did, though. Absolutely love 'em. Not very bass heavy, but it's present. The clarity is what's amazing. I'm hearing details in the music that I could only hear before with my big over-the-ear cans... Sound isolation is better than the Sony's, too (probably because they fit in the ear a little deeper).

Dude - did you read the whole thread? That's pretty much what I did - had some Sonys, liked the sound but they kept crapping out.
I bought some Shures, but mine were e3s - and I was sorely disappointed. I've heard the e4s are sweet, but I'm in love with my UE Superfis.
Either way, we've got some pretty nifty phones. Let's gloat!
Sorry -- apparently read too fast and missed your post on the UE's (which I've heard great things about, though I've never heard them personally).
And, yes, we should certainly congratulate ourselves on audiophile narcissism and support of the economy through the purchase of high-premium consumer electronics...
Fuck it... you get what you pay for. In this case--awesome sound.
Best...
Ultimate Ears.
I bought some Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5EB (Extended Bass) because I love techno + bass and I'm an audiophile. I recommend the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5PRO for you. People are right, you get what you pay for.
I'm not opening my box of earphones until xmas day along with my first iPod.

I've got the UE-Super-fi Pros. I love them.I found the bass on the Pros and the EBs pretty comparable.
I couldn't wait til xmas and I opened them. These earphones are the best!

or any headphones similar, with the little different sized rubber bits to fit your ears perfectly and block out any outside noise. yum. then you never have to hear those ladies always jabbering on buses.
