Hiho guys,

this is my first post here in this forums.

I saw the film and i think it's amazing Tongue

I ask myself why Edward does quote the magazine (I am Jacks...). Is this to show, that he has lost himself and that he has to figure himself out with other Persons (Tyler, Jack...)?

What do you think?

i just thought it was he was amazed that someone would write so many articles in that way and just sort of adopted the same style in his speech
kind of like when people start referring to themselves in the third person

I would argue that he begins to adopt that manner of speech as he further becomes a tool, or appendage of Tyler. As he lives with Tyler more and more he serves his (Tyler's) aims without even fully being aware of what those aims are. Much like the involuntary beating of your heart, or the fact that your hand writes because you tell it to so does Edward's actions concerning Tyler. His individual identity becomes lost, he is Tyler's unknowing pawn, he is Tyler's broken face. Until the very end of the book, he is Tyler, and not the other way around.

I think that I either heard or read an interview with Chuck (likely somewhere here on the site, but I'm too lazy to look for it) that he simply needed a way to convey Jack's thoughts. In other words, it wouldn't be good to have Ed Norton saying "I am very angry right now". But it was a ploy to understand his emotions. "I am Jacks raging bile ducts", or "I am Jacks seething revenge". It gets you into the characters mind without just 'telling' his feelings.

Plus, Chuck loves to use lines like that as a "chorus" to keep repeating at times through his book. It brings the reader back to a familiar place. Another example of his, 'Bitch is not the right word, but its the first word that comes to mind.' Again by repeating that phrase through Choke with a different opening word, the reader could understand what the Character was feeling without Chuck saying "I think that broad is a bitch".

Or I could be completely full of shit, which is highly likely right now.

It's a Reader's Digest reference. In the old copies of Reader's Digest, they used to have articles that were "I am Joe's" and "I am Jane's" about body parts. Chuck said that he remembers reading "I am Joe's prostate..." in his grandma's bathroom. They tried to get the rights to use "Joe" for the movie, but Reader's Digest wouldn't let them. I don't know if that helps(?)

I think this is the correct assumption. One of Chuck's literary devices to avoid ordinary narration.

Or like the "flash, give me ______" of Invisible Monsters.

In the rough cut of the film, they use actual copies of Reader's Digest and the voice overs refer to "Joe's Gallbladder" and so forth.

As part of the Test audience for Fight Club in June 1999, I was inspired to create my first actual performing band, "Joe's Gaul Bladder" (aka Joe's Gall Bladder) which toured the state of California (and more recently, most of America) in tribute to Reader's Digest and the beautiful humor of Fight Club.

Who knows? Joe's Gall Bladder might turn up in your town any day now...
