As far as I can tell, it's set in Delaware

- zip code on Durdens business card is 1980X, mine is 19803
- "I heard they started a new fight club up in Delaware City"

Why did CP do this, because so many financial/credit institutions are heavily located in this area? Delaware just seems so unlikely...

Does the slogan on this sign ring a bell (it should!)? Wilmington is the city that many of the financial institutions have their heardquarters (MBNA, ING, et al)

So I am curious, has anyone else heard anything about this?

Why did he choose Delaware; Has Chuck traveled to Wilmington?

We do have a pretty nasty old industrial area down near the Christiana river too. I guess all cities do really

Hey td,

all those pictures are WAY to big. Can you resize them or upload them as .jpg's? Go to "POST REPLY" next to "New Topic" instead of just posting in the post box at the bottom of this page. You can upload your pictures as an attachement.

Thanks!

And here's some information for you:

The telephone number of the Paper Street Soap Company (as printed on the phone the Narrator uses to call the "1888" office building near the end of the movie) is (288) 555-1534. The Paper Street Soap Company's phone number as listed on Tyler's business card is (288) 555-0153. Jack's boss' business card shows a phone number of (288) 555-0138. At the time of the film's release, area code 288 was "reserved for future use".

The ZIP code on Tyler's card is 19808, which is Wilmington, Delaware.

The "filing cabinet" apartment block that the Narrator lives in is called "Pierson Towers", and the motto is "a place to be somebody" which is the city motto for Wilmington, Delaware.

There really is a Paper St. in Wilmington, Delaware, but there's no street number 1537 (the numbers on that street don't go that high).

The film appears to take place in Wilmington, the largest city in Delaware, where most credit card companies and 60% of Fortune 500 companies are incorporated. The cities mentioned in the car-smashing scene include New Castle, Delaware City, and Penns Grove, NJ, which are all very close to Wilmington.

Googled "Fincher, Wilmington, Fight Club" Smile

Cool

Did Chuck visit or did he just know about Wilmington from research? I haven't been able to find any significant information regarding his selection of setting other than the basics that we have posted.

You know I haven't read FC in so long. Does he specifically mention anything in the book that places the story in a specific location?

Because I'm thinking otherwise Wilmington was chosen by Fincher because it had the look he wanted for the film. Just an idea.

I loaned my copy out, but I do not recall. Good question, was it chosen by Chuck or did Fincher adapt it...

Quote:
Evidently, Wilmington, Delaware, was the intended location for the story and Fincher spends five minutes explaining why they couldn't shoot in Delaware; a bizarre tangle of studio legal gobbledygook that involves characters' name-clearances, the concern of citizens with the same names suing for damages, the inability to use recognizable bars and buildings and no shot could feature the Delaware State flag! Such is filmmaking in the modern age.

hey, where is that quote from? I'd love to read the article. There are so many FC movie fanatics on this board, but where the hell are they when you really need them eh?

I have another question now. Did Fincher choose the book to make a film or was he was he brought on after the script was written?

Do you remember when this was being filmed in your hometown td?

Yeah, I was wondering why my topic was developing so slowly!

I foudn the quote on about the 8th or 9th page of a google search for wilmington+"fight club"

It never was actually filmed here, the quote in my previous post says why. I think they filmed in Atlanta... ?

I also just came across this in one of those online 'Fight Club' scripts

Quote:
JACK (CONT'D)
Look, can I just come down in person? I live here -- in Wilmington.

Yes, all my credit cards have main headquarters here. No? Why not?

Why can't I speak to an account rep? No, wait, don't put me on --

Jack reacts to being put on hold.

INT. BATHROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Jack sits on the toilet. He digs through a magazine rack. IKEA
catalogues, Pottery Barn catalogues and more of the kind. Jack opens
an IKEA catalog and flips through it.

JACK (V.O.)
I had become a slave to the IKEA nesting instinct. If I saw something
like the clever Njurunda coffee tables in the shape of a lime green Yin
and an orange Yang --

Just got done watching the movie with CP's commentary

they briefly mention Wilmington, and Chuck talks about how some guy 'wrote down the cities and figured it was wilmington' then Jim says in effect 'yeah we wanted wilmington because of the credit corps there', but I didn't get anything concrete about where the idea for the setting originated.

I am leanign more towards the screenwriters and directors taking authority and developing the setting in Wilmington

It takes place in Wilmington because, as anyone over 18 knows, every credit card company is based there. I get 3 or 4 credit card offers a month from credit card companies, all with return addresses in Wilmington.

I believe he talks about this during his commentary on the Fight Club DVD.

Yes, Fincher was given the book while he was filming 'The Game'. Same deal with getting Brad onboard. Fincher (having worked with him on 'Se7en') took it out to him and got him to sit down and read it.

They then hired Jim Uhls to adapt it. I'm not really sure how close Fincher was to the actual adaption work, but I know he was involved in the project from the start. I'd imagine he kept a good eye on things as they progressed, but he's such a visual filmmaker that it's possible the fine detais of the script he only had a cursory interest in.

yeah i wa slistening to the commentary recently too, and it did take place there, but they couldnt make any direct references to it, like showing the flag, or using the names because of other issues. he also mentions a whole thign about there being another marla singer, i think it all kinda tied in
