Quick Questions About Fight Club...?

I'm trying to understand Fight Club entirely.

I only have a few questions. I have some ideas but am not REALLY sure if they are the right answers.

#1: What does the protagonist deeply want? And what is he working against?

(My guess: self-destruction, does not fit society's standards of happiness, to do all the things he secretly wants... not sure about these answers. Not sure what he's working against.)

#2 Why does the protagonist REALLY  create Tyler Durden?

#3 What is the conflict of Fight Club and why?

These questions all tie and relate with eachother. I'm just trying to understand it as a whole.

I look forward to your replies. Thanks.

It sounds more like you're asking us to do your homework...

But I think you're off on #1 - you've answered what he's working against (partly) but not what he's working for.

#2 - Look into Freudian psychology, and you may get some ideas

#3 - If you can answer #1 properly, you'll find answers for this.

Yes, this is homework. However, it's not for the reasons that you think it is.

It's homework that I assigned on my own because school will be tough next year. It's good for extra practice since school will start in about a month.

When I watch movies, I try and analyze it in my head. And I don't quit until I get the answer. And I've been thinking about this for a few days now...

Can anybody help me understand more about what the protagonist wants and the conflict? Because you understand this better than I do (this is the toughest practice I've done out of the 14 movies I watched this summer).

I'm also pretty sure that the protagonist creates Tyler Durden to do all the things he secretly wants. It said so in the movie when Tyler says he says he acts how he wants to acts, dresses how he wants to dress, and fck's the way he wants to fck.

I got it.

The protagonist wants to be machismo. So he creates Tyler Durden to do all the things he secretly wants.

What he's working against is his job, insomnia, and loneliness (hence the support groups).

Am I right?

Hi FCFan,

I think monkeywright made a good point there, you should consider reading up a lot more on psychology and disorders if you want to understand why the protagonist created Tyler Durden. Also, don't forget to read the book.

Maybe he's just working against himself. And when he does that he suddenly sees himself being a part of the intricately woven fabric of society. So by going against himself, he ends up going against the world that he's so much a part of.

Oh and also he has daddy issues Smile
