name symbolism?

This is a bit of a weird question but I was wondering- does Marla Singer's name have any symbolic meaning?
"Marla Singer" sticks out so much, and is just such an unusual name that I think there's probably some reason Chuck Palahniuk chose it.
It seems like it means something, I just can't figure out what.
Any guesses?

The real Marla Singer won a contest on the Cult and got her name used in the book. It's a shame she doesn't post anymore.

Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.

On the DVD commentary for Fight Club, Chuck says that he named the character after a girl who picked on his sister in grade school.

If there is some deliberate symbolism, he has surpassed Steinbeck in the same way Steinbeck surpassed Hawthorne.
Hawthorne's symbolic character names are mind-numbingly obvious ("Young Goodman Brown"), Steinbeck's are a bit more subtle (Will Freely), and Palahniuk's character names are... cryptic as Hell?
