Meaning of Enlightenment?
Seeing as the book and movie are kinda different I figured i'd post this here too, what is in your opinion the meaning of elightenment?
There are a number of portals to stop thinking.
Being present .
living in the now.
Your body is the best way to becoming present. It is a gateway. Once you are present in the moment, your mind will cease, only occasionally trying to get your attention in many clever ways.
When you are living in the present moment, there are no problems, there is no fear, there is no more torment.
It is possible to live with no mind. The mind cannot exist without past or future, you will notice it taking into projected futures or reliving the past over and over.
The mind cannot control you if you manage to stay present.
The continual state of no mind is called enlightenment.
I dunno, but I don't think it exists.
Your definition seems to me to glorify mental retardation.
port , i like you more and more.
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
I’m like a newborn swaddled in soft brushed cotton, and my first words can’t help but delight.
Western intellectual history of term "enlightenment" is the basis for the secular idea that relates to a localized, religion-specific "enlightenment". It also attempts to bridge the traditional gap between religions and religious belief and psychological science. In this secular sense, 'the enlightened' are those who are not distracted by their thoughts but who stay focused —resisting the natural tendency to be come 'lost' in thinking about experience (rather than experiencing the present). This focus is called 'awareness

I studied a little about Buddhism back in college, and Buddhists strive for enligtenment, which they describe as anything that makes you feel contented inside and makes you feel happy about yourself without the influence of the outside world, kinda anti social and self development at the same time if you ask me.

Dude. The spam bots are gaining functional thought process!
Step back. Evaluate. Recognize.
Enlightenment is accepting it and forgetting it.

Whoah. Huge bump.
My theory:
When Jack says he is enlightened, I think that it was a way for Chuck to show that he hadn't really yet hit bottom. See how Chuck writes some words in capitol letters:
"Still, I'm doing the little FAX thing. I write little HAIKU things and FAX them around to everyone. When I pass people in the hall at work, I get totally ZEN right in everyone's hostile little FACE"
and
"I'm saying HELLO to everybody at work. HELLO! Look at me. HELLO! I am so ZEN. This is BLOOD. This is NOTHING. Hello. Everything is nothing, and it's so cool to be ENLIGHTENED. Like me."
It sounds like a teenager who just watched Fight Club for the first time. He wants to be Tyler Durden, he wants to be charismatic and interesting. He wants to get in everyone's face and show them that he is different and enlightened.
Am I making any sense?
Enlightenment, what does it mean? That's a very interesting question, but more specifically what does enlightenment mean for the narrator? In my opinion the narrator's enlightenment is his awakening. He was tired of living his meaningless lifestyle of law obeying, extreme consumerist "regular Joe". Tyler, that's his enlightenment. Tyler the idea, how Tyler thinks, his opinions, how he acts. He subconsciously created Tyler in order to be enlighten. That kind of idea is in all of us we “just don’t have the courage to go with it”.
holyshit that couldn't be anymore right-on

Whoa, this just blew my mind!
