How to kill Tyler?
Jack kills Tyler when he tries to commit suicide. That he survied was luck I think, I think he hasn't expected to survive (or did he?). I want to know what exactly killed Tyler?
Was it the knowledge that Tyler isn't real, that Jack is enlightened about the whole situation? Was it, that Jack said very clearly, that he will kill Tyler? Was it, that he accepted that he's gonna die - and tyler with him?
Dont really know what it was.
You need a silver bullet.

Once he shot himself he came to the realization that he didn't need Tyler anymore.

Eh.
He realizes he doesn't need Tyler anymore. Then he shoots himself, metaphorically killing Tyler.
He's the guy who needs to blow up his condo just to break away from his material possessions... so it's fair to say he really needs a dramatic example for things, including "killing" Tyler.
When giving your stuff to the poor to live a minimalist lifestyle or waving goodbye to your imaginary friend isn't enough, you've gotta blow up your building and shoot yourself in the neck.
same difference to the point I meant.
Earlier Tyler says "Without pain without sacrifice, we would have nothing."
Also, during the chemical burn scene Jack keeps closing his eyes to escape the pain.
In this final scene of the movie, Jack tells Tyler "My eyes are open." And accepts the pain of reality (by sacrificing his neck), proving to himself that he doesn't need Tyler anymore to be an enlightened or courageous person.
EDIT: Just read the linked thread... 'Jaded Jack' says esscentially the same thing.
personally, i think it was the knowledge of the fact that Jack was going to kill Tyler. he knew it so therefore he kills Tyler. if that makes any sense. let me try to reword.
Jack knows Tyler is in his head. He knows he must get rid of him. Thus he puts the gun to his mouth to kill Tyler, not expecting to live, but just to do anything to get rid of Tyler. And I think that it was major symbolism with the gun to his cheek.
i dont know, im probably fucking wrong haha. i hope i helped a little?
I think it all comes down to what tyler said about hitting bottom.
I think that he realises hes reached bottom which is what tyler was trying to (and acheiving apparently) to help him do.
If shooting yourself isnt hitting bottom i dont know what is.
The reason he shot himself, other than to get rid of Tyler, was that it made for a dramatic ending to a cool movie, gave the chance for Norton to deliver one last, memorable line, "Find some gauze..." er, maybe two, "You met me at a very strange time in my life," although I prefer the former to the latter, and to make way for a killer ending sequence where the buildings collapse outside the window to the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" as Jack and Marla hold hands.
It's cool as fuck every time I watch it.
could I then shoot you in the cheek after shooting him and listen to the Pixies as well?
I'll bring the gauze.
I would very much like to shoot you in the cheek and listen to the Pixies.
Don't... I'm using that cheek to fill in the space between my jaw and temple.
