I really loved this movie not only, as is the case for many of you other Chucky P. fans, as an introduction to one of my favorite all time authors but on its own merits as a fine film by David Fincher.

Now I have to ask, why is is this movie largely regarded (esp. by critics & in Hollywood history) to be a FLOP?

So many people I know love & worship this movie. The fact that it is so underrated really fills me with RAGE!

Critics and actual people don't think alike. How often do critics praise a good movie, instead of the 3-hour epic? Not to often....

Well, that is, a good movie by my terms. If you dug Titanic or Lord of the Rings cool, but I couldn't get into them.

They use the term "flop" to indicate less than stellar ticket sales.

Apparently it didn't do so well at the box office. Sad

Oh, please! primal_monk, you have a serious superiority complex.

Quote:
Fight Club Seperates the people from the sheep.

Oh really? Therefore, all people who said, "Yeah! This world sucks! I love Fight Club!" are the true people, but those who said "Eh, it's not really my kind of movie..." are sheep? Spare me!

Most of these "true people" who see the movie don't do anything about the world they live in, so what makes them any better than these "sheep"? The fact that they're depressed and don't like the world?

A lot of your rambling had some okay thoughts... not original at all, but they were okay. I just hate how all of these "enlightened ones" think they are above the "normal people".

I don't remember seeing 101 advertisements for fc like oh say "Kangarooo Jack". Like Chuck has said in interviews FOX bought fight club not because they liked the anti materialism theme but because they feared another company would make it therefore raking in all those $'s. They didn't have to pimp it out they just wanted the copyrights in their pocket. FOX probably didn't care if it sold one ticket.
But a beautiful story like fight club spreads like wildfire, with or wthout a promo-blitz.
Although after it was released on video and dvd FOX realized what they had, hence the double dvd.

primal_monks comments arent with-out some substance. eg,. everyone has litmus tests for people, when u meet someone & are trying to understand them and who they are.

not so much the 'If u dont like Fight Club, youre a moron' , more id say, if someone doesnt understand the alternatives to the norm. that a Club style philosophy is discussing. Its like when i meet ppl that dont 'get' American Psycho, its mind blowing. Ive come across so many ppl that dismiss it for being 'crude or violent' when in fact its just black comedy.

diah !

and Primal Monk, you´re absolutely right!

and Wesley Sonck:
I´d call American Psycho violent and crude but that being a part of it that makes it good. I agree with the dark comedy and people who don´t "get" it blowing our mind parts.

yeah, its sad isnt it. its not that hard to 'get', and i used 'crude and violent'-- well, thats what these not-understanding it idiots call it, as a way they use to describe it to make it sound crap. So noted, it is crude and violent in a great way! more gore i say.

i can only wonder whether Mary Harron even considered using the bit with the rat and the acid in the film!!! haha, its hilarious.

ps. i luv Cuckoo for Caca too!

haha, with Mila Kunis of That 70s Show? haha. i saw on the cover for the box, here in Oz, some asshole, had the nerve to put a 10/10 on it, and possibly sign their name to it to. its game indeed.

lord, when i heard about this- aaaaaages ago, i felt sick. and the director, here, if you want to puke NOW!, Morgan J Freeman isnt THE morgan freeman, luckily. I would say that this movie was a complete flop, in theatres. When it came out I did not know one person that saw it at my school, I did not even see it. Even the ppl you would expect to be into CP did not see it. The previews told you nothing about its plot and it basically looked like some mindless about urban destruction and chaos. But when it got to video it exploded in my town. Now I cant think of anyone I know that doesnt have the collectors DVD or can quite easily quote the movie. Did anyone here who had not read the book or known who CP was see the movie in the theatre.

I missed it in the movies also, sadly too because seeing it for the first time in the theaters woulda kicked much ass. I had not really seen and advertisments for it and never really heard anything about it when it was in the theaters.

It's a cult movie though, as said before and that makes it a love it or hate it movie, no in between.

I saw Fight Club six times in the theatre, well, 5.5 since I missed the first half before walking out of Bats in disgust and sneaking into Fight Club. It was a slow month at the theatres, as evinced by my previous comment of paying for Bats.

It was while I was waiting for it to come out on video that I bought the book.

this has probably been mentioned in here before but i am too lazy to read through the thread.

I would like to think Fight Club failed at the box office because it seemed to have been marketed so horribly with the TV promos at least. It seemed to be the movie was basically just 2 hours of random fights by the promos on TV and not much more to it than that, that is one of the reasons why I put off seeing it for so long. Then I finally did see it, then I became a Chuck fan, and everyone lived happily ever after.

The End... or something like that....

fight club was a flop money-wise. but then again so were most stanley kubrick films. etc., etc., etc., etc. so i think we can all agree that while it wasn't a blockbuster, it was, morally speaking, a hit. it was certainly controversial.

"Scream" was actually an intelligent movie if you remember that it was intended to lampoon the horror genre in general. unlike most horror movies it was *supposed* to be funny.

i, for one, have a superiority complex.

and the Young Ones is a fabulous show.

that is all.

all movies that stir al little blood and scare "average" people into an uncomfortable seat are considerred flops in the theatres, but usually excel in the rental/home video category. i read somewhere that Fight Club was the highest grossing movie for video sores and did better on the video shelves than it did in theatres. so depite that movie did horrible in theatres or was considerred bad by critics, doesnt mean its not good.

I saw Fight Club in theatres. And yeah, I went in thinking it was just going to be a bunch of random fighting. Hell, the only reason I went is because a friend of mine dragged me to it. He's obsessed with anything that involves any violence whatsoever, so of course, he HAD to see a movie named Fight Club. Of course, it turned out absolutely spectacular. So yeah. Hooray.

i think the main reason why Fight Club didnt do as good as it COULD have done, is its marketting wasnt that good. theres some talk of this on the Fight Club DVD commentary but I think it was Chuck (or maybe Fincher...not sure which) were saying that everyone thought the movie was just a guy comedy movie. A movie about guys punching each other, and that its philospohical meaning didnt go any deeper than that. Because of its marketting noone took the film seriously and didnt wanna shell out 12 bucks to watch a potential crap movie. Thats why it did so well on video release, cause people werent afraid to spend 3.50 on a movie that looked interesting, but could be bad

The best movies are always put down by the critics. Case in point, "Almost Famous," "Boondock Saints" and of course, FC. And a lot of movies that are hailed by critics as being wonderful are really just...bad. Did anyone ever see Vanilla Sky? If you haven't, it's not worth the three bucks it would take to rent it.

My point is that critics are just people like you and me; they hate some movies on a gut level, they love some movies immediately. And FC is the kind of movie that grows on you. If you were already a Palahniuk fan and walked into that movie ready to love it, you would. If you had read some little AP report about it, saying something like it's a movie about a guy who beats himself up, you would probably dismiss it right offhand. And even if a critic *does* love a movie like FC right off the bat, they still have to think about what the majority of the populace is going to think. And the majority is not able to appreciate FC. Personally, I don't want them to...it makes it better for the rest of us.

i don't think that all or even most critics hated fight club. just read the little thing that comes in the DVD jacket Wink

as someone who worked at a movie theater i know that american movie audiences simply don't want to think. they'd rather see "mighty joe young" or "screwed" than fight club or even the blair witch project. I have literally watched people make those exact choices. people have demanded their money back from me for the blair witch project because they "didn't get it" and therefore it "sucked."

of course, as bertrand russell said, most people would rather die than think. in fact, they do so.

pop status tends to consume things and burn them out. nobody is going to be renting "Glitter" in ten years. cult status sorta means that generations from now, some kid might pick up your movie.
i was one of those kids who loved cult movies. horror to blacksploitation. fuck the majority. fuck the Academy.
studios plan on a certain amount of movies to be released that will make more money later on, like Fight Club.

Good movies now adays are usualy disreguarded by most people. If there is thought involved in a movie. Then most people will not like it. And thats why you get so many shitty movies these days in the theaters. Now and then there will be a few that slip through the cracks and make it to the mainstream theaters. Adaptation is another example of one of these movies. Usualy to see good movies today you have to go to the theaters that show independant films like the Lagoon or local theaters.
