Waytansea Island.
Waytansea Island?
Wait And See Island?
my friend who borrowed Diary from me after i read it just pointed this out to me. i hope this doesn't spoil the name for everybody, i can live with it but he says that every time he reads the name he sees it as four words and not two.
Hehe. i wonder if this was intentional.
I was about a third of the way through the book when it jumped out at me. Then it was just stuck in my head like that...
I always have a problem "hearing" the names correctly in my head. For example, do you pronounce the final "e" in "Delaporte" and make it sound Italian-ish, or not?
Waytansee just came to me as WAY-tan-sea. I'm simple like that..

That's okay, I was reading it wuh-TAN-suh, which made me feel pretty stupid when it changed.
Daddy! Tell me about Delaporte!

I read it "DAY-la-PORT" though "DEhl-uh-port" could be right as well.
Boy, I was completely off track. I gave him a nice De La POR-teh name. Dammit. Who knows what other name I've got totally wrong...

You could be right.
And there I should go into a rant about how English is a bitch because you never know how to pronounce words just from their spelling, but i will spare us all...

'Tain't nutting English bout 'Delaporte', P-Wolfie.
The way you pronounce it, is. I bet the original pronunciation is my version. And "Waytansea" is definitely English. Ok, T-Truckie?

i read it as way tan sea.
as in, everyone there was way tan.
but i see how it could be wait and see..that certainly makes a tad bit more sense.
with a bit of luck, his life was ruined forever. always thinking that just behind some narrow door in all of his favorite bars, men in red woolen shirts are getting incredible kicks from things he'll never know.
I didnt notice it until now, im such a dumbass.
Nice touch indeed.
I'd like you to tell me that you are a false prophet and that God is a superstition.

That's how I said it, too....
Also, I called it "Way-tahn-zeah" Island the whole time I read it.

Delaporte- I pronounce it Delahporteh
OK, somebody please pay attention to a reading (argh, but he isn't reading from Diary, is he?) or ask Chuck. Meanwhile, we can have a poll, or arrange bets.

Me too. I guess I was just too excited to be reading it.
i also imagined "De-La-Por-Tay" or something like that, maybe just "De-La-Port". i also imagined a sort of stereotypical Latin homosexual, so don't feel bad COpoetics.
and, yes, i imagined him like that BEFORE i found out he was gay. he was a cool character, though, and it sucks there wasn't more said about him.
*feels much better now*
Thanks, guys.
Note: I love how the inscription on Angel's gin flask was "Te amo" -the same thing Peter used to say to Misty, already giving us a clue that it might be a present from him. That, and the whole dark man wearing a "gold chain tangled in his grey chest hair" made me think of him as Latino.

Sorry, but I dont get why david Bowie is so popular, what is it about him anyway, his voice is terrible, his songs are bland in the extreme, and you just know that if he just started out this year, he would get nowhere with songs like his.....
I gave up writing my shitty book because It sucked and I'm not clever enough to be able to finish it.
um....... Squall? the quote you copied doesn't mention Bowie at all. wtf are you talking about?
Has noone considered Tecumseh lake?
To-come-see?
Anyone else think Waytansea is a fictionalized version of Catalina Island in southern Cali? The references to Long Beach and the old hotel make me wonder. Hmmmm.
I didn't think of Catalina Island at all. I pictured something more up north.
"Everyday takes figuring out all over again how to fuckin live."
Damn, I didn't notice that either.. I always pronounce it way-tan-shu.

I hadn't spotted it, until it was mentioned in one of the threads. I think it is an excellent touch. You see, this is what the whole island does: they have nothing to do with progress, they just wait (for the money to run out, for the next misty incarnation to appear, for money to come back) and see history repeating itself in a nice time loop. It is also a nice sinister warning for every Maura/Constance/Misty that comes to the island: Just wait... and you'll see what we'll do to you... Mwa ha ha ha ha...
