trouble?
hi all. im having a hard time reading diary. love all his others but this one is having a hard time keeping my attention. thinking about putting it down and start to read invisible monsters. whaddya think? also would like to recommend the book "Goth" by this Japanese author. its amazing.
hmmm ive been having trouble reading anything since RANT ive no idea what that was about i kinda suffered through it but Diary is one of my favourites so each to his own and all that - but try and finish it anyway as Chuck always has great endings to his books.
"They express their individuality by wearing the same clothes reading the same books listening to the same music and hanging around in a big group - individulas finding safety in numbers - even God laughed at that one" Chuck Palahniuk
Diary has been, by far, my least favorite of all of Chucky P's projects; like you say, I just could never get into it. I think it's supposed to be written by some 50 year old woman, or maybe I'm just making that up. It felt boring and disjointed. Some houses had some graffiti in them; there's a huge fire. I have no idea what's going on and I don't particularly care. If you're a newcomer to Chuck, stick with the oldies, Fight Club, Survivor, Lullaby, Invisible Monsters, Choke...really those are his strongest. The newer stuff is more formulaic, shorter, and just not as expansive as far as twisting characters into differently shaped balloons from what we saw at the beginning. Or maybe everyone out there is falling more in love with the annual Chuck offering and I'm walking uphill in snow both ways. Either way, it's getting cold, and tiring, you young'uns don't know what we dealt with.
Diary is pretty hard for me to read (I've got about 40 pages left). I Just don't get it. Misty is boring, no real problem is really set and it just seems to follow her amazing(ly boring) life. IM on the other hand is one of my favorite pieces of literature. I'd say just finish Diary for the sake of completion, but then pick up IM IMMEDIATELY!
diary is plain hard to read. i think its the second person narration thing. but i feel the same way

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
Diary is my least favorite of his novels. I hate to say that I suffered through it, but I did. However, Invisible Monsters is one of my favorites. I recommend it to everyone who asks me for a book recommendation.
Also, Huntercarson, I disagree. I thought that the ending to Snuff was horrible. I liked it up until the end, then I was just disappointed.

Diary wasn't Chuck's best, although I read it without much effort. Pygmy has been the one that I can't seem to get through. The dialect is too much for my brain to handle, I guess.
Invisible Monsters is definitely one of my favorites! There's nothing wrong with leaving a page bookmarked for future reading and starting a new novel.

dont put it down. there are things written behind the walls.
Just for the record, i like Diary. I don't really read too fast, but i remember i breezed through it.
well, as the author wrote it, why do we like the things that we like?; and then there's this:
"what you can't understand, you can make mean anything."
i guess thats the trick.
I agree with lauran. I'm only the first few chapters in, but so far I like it. There's not really an exact story line so far but I like the questions it asks. I don't think the novel is necessarily supposed to be directly about the story but maybe the messages within it.
Man is the cruelest animal.
I shouldn't have bought Diary.
Invisible Monsters is a good choice! I also love Haunted, but people are divided on that one.
I want more than them
That's the difference
wow. i didn't expect to get so many replies. thanks to everybody and im looking forward to invisible monsters. I'd have to say that Rant is by far my favorite. Lullaby was a really good one too. Don't forget to check out "Goth" by Otsu-ichi. Im telling yins, its a real nail-biter.

Invisible Monsters is my favorite. Read that one. Diary took me about a year to read. I kept picking it up and putting it down again. I read IM in about two days.
