story v. characters

Most of Chuck's books seem to have events happen to the characters rather than having a major story line. Many films or books are more about the story than the actual characters and some individuals prefer that over character development. Diary is one of Chuck's only books that has this grand conspiracy that seems more like a flowing story rather than things or events that happen to a character. Because of this, the book isn't as Chuckish as the others. However, Diary does have fantastic character development as do all his books. His characters always seem like actual people and even though some may be simple minded, they are always complex in a variety of other ways. My favorite of his books are Fight Club, Survivor, and Diary.
There is no story without characters, you wouldn't care what was going on (as far as the storyline) if you didn't have interest in the players, right? I am one such person that prefers the character development. But that's just my personal pref. Your point is noted on the story line. I think that is part of the appeal though, to read something that leaves you guessing or wanting for more details.
I loved Diary, everything about it flowed...
sidenote...
I have never read Fight Club (love the movie) I considered just adding it to the collection. Is it a must have?
