Who thinks this is not a very good name for a Chuck Palahniuk
novel? I agree with you.

I like the name, but it does seem somewhat out of place for chuck.

But i think it might be a good thing, it shows that he might be progressing as an author.

Its not as tight and straight forward as his others. But I care about the content more than the title.

I just read somewhere that it's just been changed to DIARY.

Fight Club should have been titled Project Mayhem.

Invisible Monsters was a horrible title.

Survivor was an excellent title.

Choke was an excellent title.

Lullaby could have had a better title, but I haven't thought of one.

Period Revival, sounds like it's going to be a bad title.

Stick with the one-word titles, Chuck.

Fight Club was perfect.

Invisible Monsters was perfect considering the book was about superficiality, and the main character went from being this famous beauty goddess to a freak that nobody chose to notice.

Lullaby was about a lullaby.

Period Revival sounds like a beta title, if you get what I'm saying. Since the book is supposed to BE a period revival. I doubt it's the final title.

Period Revival did seem a little weird, but how could you not trust Chuck? Anyway, I'm excitied now that it's going to be titled Diary. A tiny lock and key? That's adorable.

With this change I contradict myself the title is now tighter and more straight forward.

The title is still important, though. It's not what MAKES the book... but if your books are art (like Chuck's) and not just stupid nonfiction for housewives, then the title can be a pretty substantial piece of the material.

I think you can't really judge the name until you read the book.
Who knows, maybe after reading the book you'll go "oh hell yeah that so cool!"

then again maybe not, I'll shut up.

after hearing that the name has been changed from "period revival" to "diary" I was wondering what people thought about Chucks' request from the publisher that it (the cover) be designed like an actual diary, complete with lock, etc...

I think its a clever idea, but doesn't seem something that he'd be associated with.

Clever idea, but a bit too similar to Lullaby? I mean, when people see his book reviews, what are they gonna think? "Chuck Palahniuk, author of Lullaby, has written a great novel in Diary." lol, we don't want people thinking he's a childrens writer here.

But not like the general public adheres to his books anyways. Its more him and his CULT. Smile

Period Revival was a better sounding tittle. But whats in a name?

I was reading the end of "Choke" again last night, and I found where Mancini talks about "Period Revival"... in those exact terms... perhaps the reason Chuck named his new book that recently...

Page 210 of "Choke"... first paragraph...

"This is life on earth as I knew it. The kind of rough, messy sex where you first want to spread some newspapers. This is me trying to put things back the way they were before Paige Marshall. Period revival. Me trying to reconstruct how my life worked until just a few weeks ago. How my dysfunction used to function so beautifully."

So there you have it... PERIOD REVIVAL & The Definition, which I personally speculate to be not only important to the book "Choke", but more to the point, a general sort-of comment by Palahniuk about his writing career and lifestyle, how it's changed, how he wants it to be... all of which makes sense because in many of the interviews around the time of "Choke" and afterwards, Chuck talks about how after 4 books of the same type of self-identity exploration and these certain types of characters, he was ready to move on... to try new things... hence "Lullaby" and the afore-mentioned "Period Revival" aka "Diary"... dig? Instead of "before Paige Marshall", insert "before Fight Club", etc... Wink

Sort-of foreshadowing his future career as a writer, a subtle hint, if you will, but it fits perfectly...

I thought Choke pretty much summed up his writing career up to that point. Like Ida, spending so much time tearing things down, that he never really built anything to leave as a legacy.

I thought Choke was much more positive and optimistic than Fight Club/Invisible Monsters/Survivor. Kind of like, proof of something he built, rather than evidence of things he tore down.

For one reason or another, I felt Choke was the most touching, moving and meaningful of Chuck's books. Not that FC and Survivor and Lullaby weren't meaningful (I haven't read IM), but Choke just felt like the most "finished" novel to me. It left me with a happy(er) feeling than when I finished Survivor, I can say that for sure. Idk if I was expecting too much from Survivor, but the book was just too predictable and finished way too quickly. Not to say that it wasn't a great and highly enjoyable novel. I'm just giving some "positive criticism".

What I love is that it seems that as Chuck writes more and more, he learns SO MUCH about how to improve upon what he's already so good at. I love that. Each book becomes more novel, more focused. Not necessarily better, just more novel, more complete.

Personally it doesnt matter to me what the title is or what it is about. I will buy anything Chuck writes. Even if it was a biography on N Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

True enough, Helen, substance matters in all extents, and as for control, well, give me back my broken night, my mirrored room, my secret life, it's lonely there, there's no one left to torture, still give me absolute control over every living soul, and lie beside me 'cause, for sure, that's an order, insecurity is the struggle, identity the judge, I stumbled out of bed today and didn't bear a grudge, I got ready for the struggle, got ready for the fight, smoked a cigarette and tightened up my abs, I thought, where am I? This can't be me. I'm not him. He's not me. Must be my double, trying to take control, and I can't forget, I can't forget, but I don't remember what, through the witnesses, to the panic, against the torn curtain, and well, maybe knowing isn't the point... chaos is...

period revival is a good title. how many times that was said, i don't really know, i didn't count, but it seems that the man knows what he's doing so far. i think titles do have some sort of impact, too. i think diary almost sounds too simple and ordinary for a chuck book. haven't, like, alot of other books had the "diary" title?? oh, i forgot, i don't really care. if it says palahniuk on the cover, it's mine!!!
oh, survivor, i thought had a beautiful ending. gave me chills, it did.

You know, everyone and their brother seems to be wanking off about how "Period Revival" the term is mentioned in Choke. What I want to know is, why hasn't anyone mentioned that the term is also used, right in the beginning, of Invisiable Monsters?

THAT'S why I like diary better as a title!

i don't notice any of these things because of my third grade reading level and my enourmous learning disabilities. i have small ears and i walk funny and i can't pick up on the things that other people can. don't laugh at me. okay, really, i'm too lazy to flip through the pages and do chuck research. if i could only say you had too much time on your hands without being a hypocrite. if i could only say that... okay, i lost my train of thought. Earlier I mentioned in this thread about "period revival", the actual words and meaning [see above for details], being mentioned in Choke and while recently re-reading Invisible Monsters I also found "Period Revival" in the last paragraph on pg.14. So open up your bibles to the Gospel According to Brandy Alexander, Chapter 1...

"What's burning down is a re-creation of a PERIOD REVIVAL house patterned after a copy of a copy of a copy of a mock Tudor big manor house. It's a hundred generations removed from anything original, but the truth is aren't we all?"

Amen brothers and sisters... give me rampant intellectualism as a coping mechanism... FLASH... give me detached existentialist ennui... FLASH... Give me lust, baby... FLASH... dig? [sly smirk]

I think it's funny that an english teacher judged a movie by its title. hahaha. okay, anyway, i guess everybody's human and fucks up alot.. we're all closeted hypocrites.
i thought invisible monsters was an interesting title, but it didn't make me want to read because reading was like bad bad bad. like the dentist thing when you're little... like the dentist when youre older too.
survivor, i rolled my eyes at the title because of the huge popularity of the tv show. my first thought was, oh shit, he's gonna be in the fucking woods?? what the F ?!
i matured alittle when i read choke and just read it... but i read the last two or three chapters when i was sleepy... i gotta read it again now.
anyway, fightclub i thought it was gonna be brad pitt and edward norton kicking peoples asses, hardcore, and i'm glad i watched it again and again, because it made me realize there was something out there hiding behind all these titles.
chuck books!! Smile Big sorry that was such a long effing post.
my bad. but you hear me, right?
