Misty's Purpose?
Okay, so when I was reading Diary I thought that in the end Misty's real purpose and true horror would reveal itself. If the whole point of saving the Waytansea was just killing all of the elders to receive life insurance, why was Misty even needed? Couldn't they have just killed all of the small families who held fortunes? That alone would keep people off of the island, because I know they also wanted money for corporations to pay for the removal of their advertisements.
I don't know, I've read all of Chuck's books and I love everything he has done, but Diary just didn't seem connected. Help?

I don't think they were killing the elders - just the tourists. The money came from the insurance of the paintings, plus what Misty's daughter could pickpocket while the tourists were hypnotised by them.
Or did I misread the whole thing?

Tabbi told Misty afterward that she set the grandparents' clothes on fire (for the life insurance). Also, Harrow before the show when asked "Aren't you supposed to be cremated?" he said "Not for another 4 hours". He was planning on burning.

It's a cycle story. Everything goes full cicle; it's tradition.
The same reason it was done like this is the same reason people go to church on Sunday and drink red wine and eat the bread. They believe that by doing so they are eating christs flesh and drinking his blood. I think it's a cautionary tale about how tradition can cloud our judgement and make people believe in the most crazy ideas.
