Confused About Ending...(spoiler***)
I really enjoyed this book, however I'm a little confused as to the ending.
Why did the plan carried out by the people on the island, in particular Misty's in-laws, involve the suicides of both them and the other older families on the island. The book makes reference to all of the "local" families attending the unveiling, and it is stated that Misty's daughter sets her grandparents on fire. So if the whole purpose of this plan was to get rid of the corrupting tourists and restore their wealth, why didn't they want to stick around and enjoy it?

There's a kazillion threads for this already!!!!!!!

they did it for the insurance money.
So the older generation sacrifices themselves to replenish the wealth for the younger ones? Interesting
Yes, and they do it every few generations or something. Which is why Peter was going to run away (If I remember right).
so, they were all doing everything for the insurance money? so misty wilmot could have been a musician/writer or anything else? why did the people on the island decided she should be a painter? as long as i can undestand, they were not interested in the paintings... so it's better to suffer from the stendhal syndrome by looking at paintings in order to be burned alive without even caring? okay, whatever

Well, it being in the Diary forum should have given you a clue, lil sis.
