what i don't get about choke
he talks about how when he was a little kid they had the internet in all the libraries and schools. correct me if i'm wrong, bur victor is meant to be in his 20s, so how could he have had the internet as a child if it wasn't even invented till the 90s?
wasnt there the internet sometime in the 80's? like late 80's or something? wasnt too popular or anything but im pretty sur eit was there
Yes, the internet existed in the 80's. It was very popular at MIT. Though I don't think any public grammar schools had access at that time.
you know, chuck puts a lot, a lot, of detail into his books, i wouldn't be surprised if that was just something that got overlooked.
yea trypd, good point. still i never even thought about it. huh.
hmm, well there could always be the odd case out where one of a thousand libraries had the internet lol
(expanding on knox's post)
yea, a lot of tech companies use libraries as testers for their products.
besides the internet was technically first used in 1969, although it was called ARPANet at the time. and was only developed into how you see it today back in 1992 when they gave it an easy-to-use GUI (graphical user interface). but it did exist as regular networks in the early 80's, so it's a possibility that libraries used it for their network databases, and it served as an example of the internet.
so you see, it could still be a possibility.
Yeah, thats the ticket....
Look at me! Look at me! I'm dark and slightly dangerous!
i think whoever said choke takes place in the near future was dead on. it's only been in the past decade that net would be available in like every library like vic said.
OK, so that way it's like a prophecy? those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it...
i always assumed that choke took place in the near future.
what's more important is whether or not there is actually a site out there with a man and monkey and a bag full of chestnuts.
memento was the shit
.the movie that is.
I actually even heard about it through an articl/interview/some fucking thing of chucks
I tell you all now that I've come to the conclusion that God is insane; it would explain everything.
This conclusion is watery, for I myself am more likely to be insane. What breaks it apart is I don't beleive in Insanity.
I think.
He might have been 20, but he wouldn't have been 0 when he went on the internet. He would have been somewhere between 8 and 12 (as a guess) so that would have made it somewhere between 1989 and 1993. Early days for the internet, but not that early.
It's never too late to stop killing people.
ok, now i feel like such a fucking retard.
Well when people read the book in ten years it will make sense that there was the internet when this guy was young so it doesn't really matter.
i know it dosen't matter. i was just making conversation.
Neat.
Mother Superior: "Would sir care for a starter? Some garlic bread perhaps?"
Renton: "No, thank you. I'll proceed directly to the intravenous injection of hard drugs, please."
There's just never enough room for all the quotes that seem necessary.
DUDE, the internet existed for a long while now, it just didn't get 'popular' because not a lot of people had computers back then...so if my computer teacher sent her first email in 1978, i'd say it's been around well before the 90s.
Don't be a dick.
did victor ever get arrested? it said the whole thing about the cop and the woman. did it just flip around or did he not get arrested?
in space the stars are no nearer
he was arrested for raping that old woman from the nursing home.
i thought Victor was in his 30's. like in his mid 30s.
just kill yourself
the internet came out in 1986, it was shit but it did exsist. and it also depends on what you call a kid maybe he meant when he was 14 which could be little as 8 years ago, and if hes 22 that would be 95' - 86' would make him 6
etc etc sorry if that was confusing :S
"If we don't take action now, we'll settle for nothing now, and we'll settle for nothing later"
No its not significant at all it seems chuck really doesnt pay much attention to certain time periods, he just writes his characters in a time frame thatll best suit the story, if they have computers when victor was a kid then they do. whether it be present or future i dont think really matters.
Does it matter?

only as much as your post did.
Well, there was that death-ray battle with the aliens about 2/3rds of the way through.... Actually, I'm kidding. There isn't any indication of which I am aware of what year the book takes place - I don't think it matters, except that it happens at a time where Victor grew up with the internet.
think ten years back. think 1994. Is there really a notable change in everyday life, other than wars and everything else youd be expeceted to know for history class. I mean I don't think chuck meant the future 100 or 1000 years from know, I mean he probably meant the kid was 8 or 11 or 14 in 1999 when he went to the library to look at neat porn in the internet, and the year is only 2009 when he is writting the story. no real big difference and nothing worth noting.

Choke takes place in the near future.
