My first post ever!
Hello everyone! I am a newbie and will soon upgrade my account once I get my check. I am all about writers workshops and getting better at what I like to do with my spare time.
Anyways... Here it goes!
I was introduced to Chuck like many of us through Fight Club. I had the advantage of reading the book first before seeing the movie. Despite the fact that this all occurred not even a year and a half ago. I am new to the scene. But am in no way not as enthusiastic as the next person here.
I fell in love with Chuck's dream like stream of conscious style and I sought out other books he made. Sadly I have only read one other book by him (I have invisible monsters but it's in cue after about four books ahead on my list. I'm a dork like that)
But I must say that while I loved the way Fight Club was written, I absolutely am infatuated with the whole book of Choke. I love the brash and unapologetic way he talks about sex and addiction. I also can relate to the part in which he talks about Victor pretending to choke (Well, he actually is choking) in order to receive not just money, but the much needed attention and love of others.
I related to the addiction part because I am too an addict. Not a sex addict mind you but Chuck is right, addiction, no matter the mask it wears, all centers around your dopamine system and your life becomes the chase to make your next rush.
I never had much growing up as far as doting parents and material objects so the part about him wanting to be loved hit a nerve. I have done some pretty stupid things before to get attention and it was like looking into a mirror and saying "What the fuck was I doing?"
Other things I loved about the book was his mother's completely fucked up sense of anarchy. Her child wasn't so much a human being as he was a tool to mess with the system. For someone who grew up being a much needed dependent for tax reasons and a welfare check till I was eighteen I felt like I understand Victor's resentment.
Anyways... This was dorky and I'm sorry for acting like an ass but I just really fucking love this book. And from what I've heard I will just die after reading Invisible Monsters.
I am definitely a fan of Chuck's. I can only say that about one other author seeing as I try not to hold my self to the adoration of other people whom are just as human as I am. But the guy's got talent.
That is all.
*Shields self from mean remarks coming my way*
Welcome. I too identify with Victor in many ways. Especially the mother issues. I hope you enjoy it here... watch your head.

welcome sorry there are not many greeters to greet you but just take a look around and make yourself at home.
Ha! Thanks guys! My name is David McGhee. Common name to a very uncommon person.
The other books on my list are
1: Rules Of Attraction
2: One of Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme novels (guilty pleasure)
3: A book my friend gave me to read which I've been putting off, Catch 22.
4: Middlesex (I cheated and already started it though.)
Right now I'm tackling the 1000+ page behemoth "Under The Dome" by Stephen King. I don't normally like his work because it is so hit or miss whether it's good or too wordy but I indeed love what this book is shaping up to be. Yeah it's over stuffed with useless paragraphs describing little things that don't matter, but it's cool in the fact that no main character is safe in it. As soon as you identify with someone they're gone. Plus the villain and his son are pretty screwed up. The reviews nailed it on the head when they said it goes by quick.
All to think it was a gift from someone who hasn't read anything since grade school.
hey David, welcome to the Cult.
Sounds like you have some stories to share, I hope to see you around in the book forum too
Welcome dude! you sound pretty awesome.

I want to read this sometime but I keep getting this mental picture of it just being a novelization of the Simpson's Movie.

Under the Dome could've been done in less than 500 pages and been amazing. Instead, we were fed this monster that tests our stamina and arm strength.
Yeah, it's a good book but I'm very close to just letting it be and moving on to my next book. Usually if I can't read a book in a few days I have trouble keeping interest in it.
Under the Dome was a mixed bag for me. The reveal of the secret of the Dome just took the book from a potential best-thing-ever into a zone of "meh".
Welcome sir!

Monkeyright I think pretty much all of his endings are meh. The only ones that kept pace with the story all the way through were Carrie and The Shining.
Pet Semetary had a good pace up until near the end then it sort of fizzled until the last page. Then it was like BAM!
The man just can't write a satisfying ending to save his life. And when he does do it it's only cool in comparison to the crap he did before.
His content is good though. The man can write.
I've read very few of his novels, but I have read the first book in the Dark Tower series (I've been meaning to finish it), The Green Mile, Cell and The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I really, really enjoyed Cell. That's a bit of an understatement. I thought the others were kind of meh though.
Cell bugged me the way he'd boldface all the little doodads and whatnots. I can understand a literary reason behind doing such a thing, but it just came off to me as him saying, "See! I'm aware of modern technology! I'm not an old, useless fart!"
Te relentless fist-bumping in Under the Dome just made me cringe. Stevie's tryin' to be cool.
He's hip, he's with it. Stephen King writes all his stories at Starbucks while checking his facebook account every five minutes.

probably not too far from the truth, although I bet he has someone else to check his facebook for him
How is this different from any other Stephen King novel ever? IT, Insomnia, Rose Madder, Desperation, and Dream Catcher all spring immediately to mind.
Yeah, I had a good discussion about it. He had the perfect setup for something otherworldly and cool, what with this colossal meth factory and giant antenna and whatnot, but instead went for something otherworldly and...dumb-ish.
Welcome! (:
You're a brighter little soul than all of the jaded people here. Never take them seriously. NEVER.
I too adored Choke. Welcome. I think we have already said hi.
Palahniuk said he started out writing like Stephen King, but felt it wasn't the right language for him. We should be so happy, we'd have never had the honor of knowing one another!

I'm new too. So I'm going to welcome you to our newness. This is the first website to wholeheartedly put up with my relentless shits of posts, as I am a forum virgin. See you around the way
BW: Shenanigans? I don't know, man, we're in our thirties now. It's not like we're at truckstops taking dumps in urinals any more.

Welcome! You seem very interesting. I hope you like it here.
