Gwen..
Hey, this is something to think about!
In Chapter 27 of Choke (the disastrous rape sex scene), the girl with the rape fantasy he meets in the bookstore is called Gwen.
And you might remember in Survivor, Fertility Hollis' real name is Gwen.
Now, to me, that seems likely an uncommon name for Chuck to repeat in consecutive books. So I'm wondering if anyone else thinks 'Fertility' has returned for a cameo in Choke?
Choke: "This is a girl named Gwen I met in the recovery section of a bookstore. It's hard to say who picked up whom, but she was pretending to read a twelve-step book about sexual addiction." (Ch.27)
I believe it is the same Gwen as 'Fertility' from Survivor. Since she can dream the future, she would have known where to meet Victor, hence why she is only 'pretending' to read the book.
Anyone agree?
Wahey! Thanks Owen!
You don't disagree with everything i think then

I wish I had a copy of Choke onhand. Ironically it's the first book of Chuck's that I read, but the only one I don't own.

I just read Choke recently. Like two months ago. It was good and stuff but I was let down a little at the end. I like to think that Chuck did that with forethought. He let you think for a while that there was some spectacular ending with God and Devils and all that cool shit. He just made Vic a regular guy that did some fucked up shit and it all came back to greet him. I respected this story more than I liked. It was still worth the read. The book is pretty though so it should be owned and awwed at from time to time I guess.
Poke me I poke you poke me.

I love this idea. That had never even occured to me. Wow. If I didn't already have a question that I've been meaning to ask, then I'd overstep Owen and ask for you on Monday.
After all, I'm much cuter.
I think he knows someone named Gwen, and that's it.
Or simply recycled the name.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
I believe the Gwen that Chuck is writting about is Choke is Gwen Stefani and he's using the scene as a means to act out his personal obsession for the singer/song writter. Come on...who doesn't like the little blonde twig girl...she's cute...
i like this guys idea

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
So did Owen ever actually ask Chuck? Now I want to know.
I really doubt the Gwen in Choke is connected in any way to Fertility Hollis.
I know this is a really old post, and i'm sure none of these people are even active anymore, but oh well, it interested me.
I don't at all think this is the same girl. For one reason, Fertility and Tender end up together at the end so unless she was sexually unpleased with him (which might be understandable at first) why would she have "sex" with someone else? Plus, if she knew everything, why would she let him make such a mess all over her wall and drapes and bed spread?
I think she was pretending to read because she was obviously a sex addict too, and was hoping to hook up with someone. I don't think she was reading "self-help" because she didn't want to change. Or like Victor, took the first few steps in recovory but hasn't tried very hard to finish.
The end
Well I was reading Invisible Monsters and on roughly somewhere around page 100, when the main character is watching TV late at night, and she's flipping through channels, there's a person named Gwen on one channel and she was on what seemed like a talk show and it said she had red hair and worked as a hooker... And if I remember correctly, at least once in Survivor Gwen/Fertility was referred to as a hooker. Consider it was basically what she was.
I just thought it was a tad of a coincidence that a character named Gwen with red hair that was a "hooker" showed up in 2 of his books released in the same year.
"Praise God. There's no real risk. This is just our default setting."

This is a cool idea. If I can, I'll ask Chuck about it when I see him read on Monday.
I agree.
